Movies Nursery Nurse Who Ignored Cries of Baby Until She Died JAILED For 14 Years

Nursery Nurse Guilty of Manslaughter After Baby Girl Died Face Down on Bean Bag

Nine-month-old Genevieve Meehan, who died, had also been tightly swaddled and covered with a blanket by Kate Roughley, 37, at Tiny Toes nursery in Stockport

MailOnline 23 MAY 2024

Genevieves' family called her 'beautiful and wonderful'

A nursery nurse who strapped a baby girl face down on to a bean bag for more than a hour and a half has been convicted of her manslaughter.

Kate Roughley, 37, tightly swaddled and covered nine-month-old Genevieve Meehan when she was in her care at Tiny Toes nursery in Cheadle Hulme, Stockport.

Sickening CCTV footage captured the moment Roughley appears to have ‘taken against’ Genevieve, affectionately called Gigi by her family – as she’s seen telling her to go home and ‘stop your whinging.' Later, she is heard saying to the baby: “Genevieve if we had any chance of being friends, you just blew it”.

On May 9, 2022, Genevieve was found blue and unresponsive after Roughley swaddled her in a blanket and put her in a cot face down with a blanket pulled over her. The nurse then placed a sheet over the further end of the cot, restricting visibility.

Some time later at roughly 1.30pm, Roughley swaddled Genevieve in a blanket, wrapped her arms and legs inside, and placed her face down on a bean bag. The baby appeared to be fighting the position by moving her head from side to side and lifting her legs.

Roughley covered her with a blanket, leaving Genevieve virtually immobilised and face down from 1.35pm to 3.12pm. The nurse then found her blue and unresponsive and raised the alarm, the court previously heard. Staff and paramedics then attempted to revive Genevieve, but she was later pronounced dead later that day in hospital.

Speaking about their beautiful daughter, her mother, Katie Wheeler said: “Gigi was not just a baby, she was a person with her likes and dislikes, her loves and her frustrations. She was a complete person.”

Giving evidence, Roughley denied ‘persecuting’ Genevieve, and said her care of her had been ‘no different to any other child’.

Gigi 'loved to laugh and to play with her tambourine,' her family said

She told jurors she was ‘distraught and heartbroken’ on finding the unconscious infant. Asked by her barrister, Sarah Elliott KC: "What responsibility do you feel in relation to what happened?" She replied: "I do feel responsible for Genevieve's death given she was in my care that day. However, I don't feel my actions were the cause of the death."

After the month-long trial at Manchester Crown Court, Roughley was convicted by a jury of manslaughter and an alternate count of child cruelty. The 37-year-old, of Basil Street, Heaton Norris, is due to be sentenced on Wednesday 22 May

Movies Nursery Nurse Who Ignored Cries of Baby Until She Died JAILED For 14 Years

UPDATE:

Nursery Worker JAILED For 14 Years Over Baby Death

BBC 23 MAY 2024

Genevieve Meehan had been swaddled and strapped to a beanbag when she became unwell

EVIL She-DEVIL Kate Roughley, 37, strapped nine-month-old Genevieve Meehan to a beanbag at the Tiny Toes nursery in Cheadle Hulme, Stockport, and left her for more than 90 minutes.

'Harrowing'

Jurors heard Genevieve, the daughter of barrister John Meehan and solicitor Katie Wheeler, died from asphyxiation caused by the stresses placed on her body by a "very unsafe sleeping environment".
Sentencing Roughley, Mrs Justice Ellenbogen told her Genevieve's death was "absolutely avoidable".

Prosecutors said the girl, known as Gigi by her family, died in May 2022 due to asphyxiation from a combination of "pathophysiological stresses".

Roughley had placed her face-down, tightly swaddled and strapped to a bean bag before covering her with a blanket.

She then ignored the cries and distress of Genevieve and showed "sporadic" and "fleeting" interest in her wellbeing for one hour and 37 minutes until she found her blue and unresponsive.

Roughly was convicted of manslaughter following a trial at Manchester Crown Court. She had denied the offence, and an alternative charge of child cruelty, claiming the death was the result of a "terrible and unavoidable accident".

Passing sentence, the judge, Mrs Justice Ellenbogen, told her Genevieve's death was "absolutely avoidable".

She said: "As the harrowing CCTV audio and video footage showed, that day you left Genevieve in that position only carrying the most cursory and infrequent of checks.

"I am certain that every person in this courtroom who watched that footage was willing you to pick her up and remove her from the danger you had placed her, knowing of course that you didn't."

The judge went on: "It was apparent that at best you considered Genevieve to be a nuisance and at times displayed antipathy and frustration with her.

"Your interactions with Genevieve on 6 May and 9 May palpably lacked any care, kindness or concern for her wellbeing."
