'Monster Mansion' which houses some of the UK's most notorious prisoners

Child killer Roy Whiting has been stabbed by one of his cellmates at a maximum security prison housing some of the UK's most horrific criminals.

The paedophile, who was jailed for life in 2002 for murdering eight-year-old Sarah Payne, was repeatedly knifed inside HMP Wakefield last weekend.

Sources said that guards at the prison, dubbed 'Monster Mansion', raced to rescue the 65-year-old and gave him treatment after the assault.

One told The Mirror: 'Whiting is hated in prison. He was stabbed and was covered in blood. They were trying to kill him.'

A Prison Service spokesman told MailOnline: 'A prisoner at HMP Wakefield was treated for minor injuries following an incident involving another offender.

'It would be inappropriate to comment further while the police investigate.'

Whiting has been the subject of repeated attacks behind bars at Category A jail.

Murderer Rickie Tregaskis slashed Whitings face with a razor blade which left him with a 6in scar on his right cheek in 2002.

Meanwhile, Gary Vinter, 53, sneaked into Whitings jail cell and attacked him with a sharpened plastic toilet brush handle in 2009. Vinter is serving a life sentence after murdering a workmate in 1996 and his estranged wife in 2008.

He later told Newcastle Crown Court he stabbed the notorious child killer in both eyes because he was a 'dirty little nonce'. He was jailed for a further five years for the attack from which Whiting made a full recovery.
