Thousands of football fans were held in a stadium in Brussels after two Swedish nationals were shot dead in what's been described as a terror attack.

The Belgium-Sweden Euro 2024 qualifier football match being played in the city was abandoned at half-time

Belgium has raised its terror alert to the highest level in the capital city and to its second-highest level for the country following the attack earlier this evening, the OCAD anti-terror centre has said.

Brussels is on its highest terror alert as the gunman, who appeared to have an assault rifle, remains at large.

French President Emmanuel Macron, who was on a visit to Albania, said: "Europe has been shaken."

A spokesman for the Belgian federal prosecutor, Eric van Duyse, urged the public to "go home and stay at home as long as the threat has not been eradicated".

He said a man claiming to be the attacker had said in a video on social media he had been inspired by the Islamic State group.

A video shows an Arabic-speaking man saying he carried out the attack in the name of God and that he killed three people.

The video and others uploaded during the attack are being verified by police, the BBC has been told.

The Will County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were dispatched to a home in Plainfield Township at about 11:40 a.m. on Saturday, in response to a stabbing between a landlord and a renter.

When deputies arrived, they found 71-year-old Joseph M. Czuba sitting on the ground near the driveway with a laceration on his forehead.

President Biden responded to the attack late Sunday evening saying, the "horrific act of hate has no place in America." "This horrific act of hate has no place in America, and stands against our fundamental values: freedom from fear for how we pray, what we believe, and who we are. As Americans, we must come together and reject Islamophobia and all forms of bigotry and hatred. I have said repeatedly that I will not be silent in the face of hate. We must be unequivocal."

"There is no place in America for hate against anyone," Biden also said. "We join everyone here at the White House in sending our condolences and prayers to the family, including for the mother’s recovery, and to the broader Palestinian, Arab, and Muslim American communities."

Authorities said deputies found two victims suffering from multiple stab wounds all over their bodies inside a bedroom of the home. All three individuals were taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for their wounds.

Authorities said one of the victims, a 32-year-old woman, was in serious condition and had more than a dozen stab wounds to her body. She is expected to survive the heinous attack.

The president of a local synagogue in Detroit, Michigan, was found stabbed to death on Saturday morning, with a trail of blood leading investigators into her home from where she was found in the front yard

A horrific, gory trail of blood splattered across the yard, up the stoop and inside the house of Samantha Woll, 40, who was discovered stabbed to death on Saturday in a heinous act of violence. Her body was covered in multiple gashes.

A neighbour called the Detroit police early Saturday morning after spotting the woman, who was the president of a local synagogue, the Isaac Agree Downtown Detroit Synagogue, lying unresponsive on the lawn. They rushed to her aid, but it was too late - Woll was pronounced dead at the scene, the police said.

Woll was known for her political activism and work to unite the faiths in the greater Detroit community, creating the Muslim-Jewish Forum of Detroit several years ago in an attempt to create peace, harmony and friendship between the Jewish and Muslim communities in the US Midwest city located in Michigan.

The police have yet to determine a motive for the slaying. The synagogue called the death "unexpected" and also added that it doesn't have any more information about Woll's death but that any they acquire will be shared when it becomes available.

Mr Hand is the member of one of the families of two hostages being held by Hamas inside Gaza who came to London this morning to emotionally plead for their release.

He joined Iris Haim, the mum of 28-year-old Yotam Haim, in making an appeal for them to be freed and attacked the “evil” Hamas gunmen who took them. Their children were taken 45 days ago and are among 240 hostages. It was Emily’s 9th birthday on Friday.

She was on a sleepover with a friend on October 7th when she was abducted as Hamas militants launched surprise raids across the border into Israel, slaughtering killing 1,200 Israelis and taking hostages.

Since the attack, Israel has responded by a massive military campaign that has devastated Gaza, killing 13,000 people according to the Hamas-run health ministry, and displacing thousands more.

Thomas and Iris came to the Israeli embassy in London as the campaign to free some of the hostages continues to grow. Thomas, 63, wearing a black tee shirt which urged: “Bring them Home NOW!” said: “I don’t know how a human being could be so evil. They had evil in their hearts.

They were slaughtering, raping and dismembering. I was shaking with fear. At some point in the day they kidnapped my little daughter Emily who was at a sleepover. They took her away. They took her on their trucks and off to Gaza.”

In a moving appeal, Thomas continued: “Help us to get her back please. Help us get them all back. You don’t know if she’s being fed or watered or what about the toilet. She probably doesn’t even have to a toothbrush. But the sheer terror of a nine year old girl down in those dark tunnels. Sheer terror, panic every hour of every day.

A suspect was arrested Sunday in the shooting of three Palestinian students in Burlington, Vermont the night before, police said, adding that contrary to media reports the shooter did not speak before firing.

Jason J Eaton, 48, was arrested Sunday afternoon near where the men, all 20 years old, were shot, the Burlington Police Department announced. They said he lives in an apartment close to the scene, a search of which revealed evidence that gave investigators “probable cause to believe that Mr Eaton perpetrated the shooting”, police said.

The victims – Hisham Awartani, Kinnan Abdalhamid and Tahseen Ali Ahmad, all 20 years old – are undergraduate students at Brown University, Haverford College and Trinity College respectively, and were on their way to Awartani’s grandmother’s house for Thanksgiving dinner when a white man with a handgun fired on them.

Two of the men are reportedly in stable condition, according to police, but the third received “much more serious injuries” after being hit in the spinal cord. Two were reportedly wearing the Palestinian keffiyeh when they were attacked.

The chief of police, Jon Murad, recommended caution when it came to identifying a motive in the attacks. “The fact is that we don’t yet know as much as we want to right now,” Murad said. “But I urge the public to avoid making conclusions based on statements from uninvolved parties who know even less.”

The mayor of the city, Miro Weinberger, said before the arrest that the investigation was focusing on whether the attack was a hate crime, while the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee said on X: “We have reason to believe that the shooting was motivated by the three [victims] being Arab.”

According to a spokesperson for the Institute for Middle East Understanding (IMEU), the committee’s attorney Abed Ayoub, who is in contact with the families, told the IMEU that the fact the shooter didn’t say anything first “makes it even clearer that authorities should be investigating this attack as a hate crime”.

“The fact that the shooter said nothing, and apparently targeted the students based on their kuffiyehs, suggests that this was a violent act motivated by anti-Arab and anti-Palestinian sentiment,” Ayoub said.

Police said two of the men are American citizens and the third is a legal resident.

They said he lives in an apartment close to the scene, a search of which revealed evidence that gave investigators “probable cause to believe that Mr Eaton perpetrated the shooting”, police said. The victims – Hisham Awartani, Kinnan Abdalhamid and Tahseen Ali Ahmad, all 20 years old – are undergraduate students at Brown University, Haverford College and Trinity College respectively, and were on their way to Awartani’s grandmother’s house for Thanksgiving dinner when a white man with a handgun fired on them. Two of the men are reportedly in stable condition, according to police, but the third received “much more serious injuries” after being hit in the spinal cord. Two were reportedly wearing the Palestinian keffiyeh when they were attacked. The chief of police, Jon Murad, recommended caution when it came to identifying a motive in the attacks. “The fact is that we don’t yet know as much as we want to right now,” Murad said. “But I urge the public to avoid making conclusions based on statements from uninvolved parties who know even less.” The mayor of the city, Miro Weinberger, said before the arrest that the investigation was focusing on whether the attack was a hate crime, while the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee said on X: “We have reason to believe that the shooting was motivated by the three [victims] being Arab.” According to a spokesperson for the Institute for Middle East Understanding (IMEU), the committee’s attorney Abed Ayoub, who is in contact with the families, told the IMEU that the fact the shooter didn’t say anything first “makes it even clearer that authorities should be investigating this attack as a hate crime”. “The fact that the shooter said nothing, and apparently targeted the students based on their kuffiyehs, suggests that this was a violent act motivated by anti-Arab and anti-Palestinian sentiment,” Ayoub said.
