Prison Nurse Flooded Jail With Drugs After Falling For Lover Inmate Who Recruited Her

Mental health nursing assistant Amy Hatfield, 38, was a huge part of the conspiracy which also involved six other inmates including her married lover, his wife and dad

A prison mental health worker who “flooded” a jail with drugs has been sentenced to ten years after she was caught in the largest behind-bars smuggling ring ever uncovered.

The gang of 16 was too big to appear in the dock together on Friday and had to be brought into court in batches to hear their fate.

They were jailed for a total of almost 90 years for their role in the conspiracy to supply drugs at HMP Lindholme in South Yorkshire. The judge pointed out SEVEN inmates died after taking Spice when the gang operated at the prison.

Mental health nursing assistant Amy Hatfield, 38, was a huge part of the conspiracy which also involved six other inmates including her married inmate lover, his wife and dad. Sheffield crown court heard prisoners could buy “any drugs” they wanted inside the 1,000 man Doncaster prison while Hatfield worked there.

Drugs Hatfield was carrying when she was busted

It was also said inmates used vulnerable prisoners to test the synthetic drug and video taped them fighting “like dogs ”. Judge Kirstie Watson said on Friday: “No other case that I have been able to find deals with a conspiracy in prison as extensive as this one.” The supply of drugs in prison, she said, was a “serious social evil”.

The court heard Hatfield was caught with £1 million pounds worth of drugs in October 2019. Officers stopped her entering work with MDMA, cannabis, Spice, Ketamine, tobacco, four mobile phones, charger cables and Ribena bottles filled with spice and anabolic steroids.

After a search of the mental health unit where she worked, a further litre of Spice was found. The amount found totalled 216,000 doses with each dose worth £50, the court heard. Hatfield’s phones, movements and banking records then helped police track down her co-conspirators.

Drugs were stashed in soft drink bottles

The prison worker was “infatuated” with an inmate called Joseph Whittingham, 35, who “recruited her”. The judge said the number of inmates found under the influence of drugs “significantly increased” before she was arrested and decreased afterwards. “There were seven Spice-related deaths in the prison between 2017 and 2019” but none in the eight months after the arrests of Hatfield and others in the smuggling ring.

The judge mentioned the death of inmate Kyle Batsford, 37, who died in September 2019 after taking Spice which matched the Spice Hatfield was caught with. Another prisoner called Gary Henry, she said, was left in a wheelchair when he tested a batch of Spice. He collapsed and hit his head leaving him in a coma. He lost the sight in one eye and the use of his legs.

The judge told the packed public gallery: “These are just two illustrations of the profound impact that drugs can have in prison and did have in the course of this conspiracy.” Jailing Hatfield for ten years, the judge said the defendant had started a relationship with Joseph Whittingham, exchanging explicit images and having sexual activity in prison.

These three knives were seized from a healthcare ward at the prison

Hatfield was given £1,000 every time she brought items into prison. “It must have been clear to you the impact of the increased drug use in prison… the additional work and stress it was causing your colleagues and yet you continued to flood HMP Lindholme with drugs and phones,” the judge told her.

“You even brought in knives which could have been used not only on prisoners but your fellow staff members. The fact you were willing to subject your friends to that kind of risk is unfathomable.”

Her lover, serial burglar Whittingham, who was said to have a “leading role” in the conspiracy, was jailed for 11 years and four months.

“You formed a relationship with Amy Hatfield who was a member of the prison staff and exploited her feelings for you, recruited her to bring in drugs, phones and a knife into prison,” the judge told him. “You recruited other members of your family, your father Paul and your wife Lucy Whittingham as bankers… You did all this for power in prison and for significant financial gain. “

Prison officers swoop as another member of the gang does a drug deal in prison

The judge said in a call recorded from prison that Whittingham had told his wife he would ‘have lots of money’ by the time he was released, adding: “You have argued that the blame for it lies at (Hatfield’s) door. I reject that... I am satisfied you recruited her as you did your father and your wife, and without you none of them would be involved.”

Among those sentenced on Friday was a mother and son, Deborah Stoddard, 56, and Anthony Campbell, 38, a convicted murderer. Campbell was jailed for 11 years and his mum Stoddard, who had £120,000 laundered through her bank account, was sentenced to nine years and six months.

The court had heard she was found with a video on her phone of a ‘spice challenge’ - when a buyer takes “a dose” of Spice and is given an extra one as a bonus.

The judge described the video as: “Two prison inmates naked and clearly under the influence of illicit substances. They had nooses around their necks” held by Campbell and another inmate.

“They were being encouraged to fight each other - like dogs in a fight,” she added. The judge said such footage was only shared by people who had a central role in the conspiracy.

The Main Players:

Amy Hatfield, 38, of HMP New Hall, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to supply class A drugs, conspiracy to supply class B drugs, conspiracy to convey drugs into prison, conspiracy to convey phones into prison, conveying knives into prison and money laundering. She has been sentenced to 10 years and two months in prison.

Joseph Whittingham, 35, of HMP Leeds, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to supply class B drugs, conspiracy to convey drugs into prison, conspiracy to convey a knife into prison and conspiracy to convey phones into prison. He has been sentenced to 11 years and four months in prison.
