Snapchat COP Lewis Edwards Forced More Than 200 Girls to Send Explicit Images

Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke, the Recorder of Cardiff, Has Imposed 13 LIFE Sentences on PEDO Police Officer Lewis Edwards and Ordered Him to Serve a Minimum of 12 Years.

Working as a police officer, Lewis Edwards, 24, groomed over 200 girls, abusing his victims, pressuring them into sending him explicit content and repeatedly threatening them

BBC 25 OCT 2023

A vile police officer has been jailed after he forced more than 200 girls to share explicit images and videos with him over Snapchat - then begged one of his victim’s fathers not to report him.

Lewis Edwards went on a horrific spree, grooming 210 girls, some as young as ten, others aged up to 16, as the 24-year-old posed as a 16-year-old boy online. Today, he was jailed for life in prison, serving a minimum of 12 years. Over a three year period the sick pervert, who joined the force in January 2021, abused all but one of his victims whilst he was a serving officer, Cardiff Crown Court heard.

The court was told how "cruel and sadistic" Edwards targeted one teenager 17 days after meeting her as part of his duties. Edwards, of Heol Ty Cribwr, Cefn Glas, Bridgend, was said to pose a high risk to young children and would use the recordings he got from his victims to blackmail them into sending increasingly graphic content – threatening to share the images online and tell their family and friends.

The cowardly abuser, who had worked for South Wales Police, also sent videos of himself performing sex acts to his young victims. He refused to appear for the second and third day of his sentencing hearing. Edwards previously resigned from the force, and pleaded guilty to over 20 blackmail, 138 child sex offences and a further offence of refusing to disclose the password to a mobile phone and USB stick.

Describing his offences, Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke, who said she couldn't force Edwards into court, said: “The defendant had a pattern of behaviour. He made online contact with a girl. The defendant pretended to be a boy of a similar age. He groomed his victims psychologically, manipulating them until he had gained control. When his victims did not comply, he would threaten them until they did what they were told.”

The judge said Edwards continued his abuse even when the girls were crying, distressed and disclosed they had self harmed. On 30 occasions, Edwards contacted his victims whilst he was working as a police officer and gained “sadistic enjoyment” from the distress of his young victims.

As she imposed 13 life sentences on Edwards, the judge told Cardiff Crown Court: "Many of his victims and their families said his actions have caused them to lose trust in the police. There is no doubt he has caused significant harm to the reputation of South Wales Police and policing in general but it should also be borne in mind that it was officers from South Wales Police who investigated this case and brought this defendant to justice."

In one instance, the evil abuser was left begging one of his victims father’s not to report him to the police after being caught red handed. Roger Griffiths, prosecuting, said one victim confessed to her father that she had sent Edwards an indecent image via Snapchat and he was asking for more and threatening to share it if she did not comply.

“Her father took her phone and messaged the individual, saying ‘This is her Dad stop now what you’re doing is illegal’,” Mr Griffiths said. “Their response was ‘Lol’ – ‘laugh out loud’. He replied with a photograph of himself with the caption ‘Just in case you think I’m joking I’m her Dad stop now’.

“From there he sensed the individual seemed to panic. They begged ‘Please don’t say anything I won’t share then. I won’t do anything’. From the panic in the tone he assumed he was speaking with a child. He suspended her Snapchat account and reported the episode to Snapchat.”

Mr Griffiths said the girl’s parents reported the incident to the police and they received advice about online safety.
But that was not the last the family heard from Edwards, the court was told. “To her new Snapchat account she received a friend request and she believed this to be a girl at her school. The moment she did so she got more threats of a similar nature,” Mr Griffiths said.

“He said ‘Send me more nudes. I’ll release the photos/send them your friend’. It began escalating. Her dad contacted the individual telling them to cease and from there they didn’t respond.”

Edwards horrifically tried to manipulate and pressure his victims, with zero remorse for what impact it had on them. The judge said he could be heard touching himself in one recording played in court and he told one victim that other girls had killed themselves and he didn’t care if she did too.

Edwards, the court heard, told his victims to write ‘Snapgod’ on their bodies. Snapgod is a distributor of child sex abuse material from whom Edwards bought images. He traumatised some of his victims so badly that one began self-harming and another slept with a hammer under her pillow.

Edwards also threatened to bomb the house of one of his victims and shoot her parents if she stopped sending him images, the court was told. Several victims said their trust of the police has been shattered.

One teenage girl addressed the judge, she said: “I want my voice to be heard, this is who I am. I thought I was talking to a really nice boy who liked me, complimented me, and made me feel good about myself. I told him I didn’t want to send images any more and he blackmailed me by threatening me and my family. I felt terrified, horror and let down.”
Her mother added: “We cannot get our head around the fact that somebody who was there to protect you could do this. The smirk he gave us in court shows that he has no remorse. I do not think he can or will have any understanding or care how he has impacted his victims. Lewis Edwards, I want you to know that as a family we will never forgive you and we feel nothing for you but hate.”

Another mother said: “As parents you will do anything to protect your child and when we think about what she went through during that period, it really does break our hearts.”

Another of Edwards’s victims said: “Before this I had stuff going on with my mental health which was getting better, but this happened and it started to get worse again. I felt worse than I was before.”

One teenager said: “Before all this I was not like this, I was an anxious person and always smiling. I’m not like that now. It’s affected my relationship with friends as I don’t want to go out, it’s had a massive effect on my life… I feel like I am always panicking.”

Another said: “I hate him, he’s horrible. I don’t know how someone could do this to me.” One mother told the judge: “I feel I’ve lost a small part of my baby girl. Her innocence has been torn from her and she will never get it back. I’m not sure any of us will 100% trust the police again.”

During the prosecution’s opening, Mr Griffiths had to take a break having become emotional reading a statement from the mother of one of Edwards’s victims.

“As a family we are dealing with the news of my declining physical health and I am in the process of undergoing medical treatment and time is extremely precious for us,” she said.

“The last few months are the time to be making memories and spending time with each other. Lewis Edwards has taken everything from us, including precious time. I want the court to understand life is never going to be the same for us again. He has destroyed the innocence of so many children and I hope they take some comfort in knowing they have had some justice.”

Another mother said: "On numerous occasions I know she contemplated suicide and still refers to those dark times when she felt hollow and worthless. I find it incomprehensible an individual is capable of creating such fear and torment of a child. I can only conclude Lewis Edwards is a broken human being. This man took my daughter’s innocence for life. She’s lost her sparkle."

Edwards, of Heol Ty Cribwr, Cefn Glas, Bridgend, previously pleaded guilty to 161 offences, including blackmail, inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, making a child watch a sex act, demanding indecent images of children, and making indecent images of children.

Susan Ferrier, defending, urged Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke not to impose the maximum sentence of life imprisonment and said his “most powerful” mitigation was his guilty pleas. She described his “appalling conduct” as “prolonged and shocking” and said he had been candid with the author of a pre-sentence report.

He told the author: “I cannot fathom the effect this has had upon them. I knew what I was doing was wrong and found it hard to look myself in the mirror. I am extremely sorry. I apologise to the victims and the court.”

They described him as “emotionally immature” and “ill-equipped” to deal with the challenges of being a police officer. “He is not a young man who has had a relationship with a woman of his own age,” Ms Ferrier said.

“Once he started his offending it quickly got out of control. He knows that he faces a very long period of imprisonment.”

Assistant chief constable Danny Richards said: “The crimes committed by Lewis Edwards are despicable and the public will be as shocked and sickened as we are that such appalling offences were committed by a serving police officer. As soon as we knew the offender was a serving police officer, Edwards was suspended and sacked at a misconduct hearing which was held at the very earliest opportunity to remove him from policing.

“His behaviour only serves to damage the public’s trust and confidence in policing and undermines the work of the responsible, hard-working police officers who serve the communities of South Wales with courage and pride. There is no place in South Wales Police for anyone who abuses the personal responsibility they hold as a police officer.

“I understand there will be people asking how Edwards could have joined the police at the same time he was committing these terrible crimes. At the time of him joining South Wales Police his vetting was clear and there was nothing to indicate that he was involved in such abhorrent offences against children.

“Our number one priority is to protect the public so if anyone has any information about the safety of young or vulnerable people or those who pose a risk in our society then I urge them to come forward and report it to us. I am grateful for the work of our investigation team who have brought Edwards to justice and ensured his victims have been protected from further harm.”

Lucy Dowdall, specialist prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service described the scale of Lewis Edwards’ crimes as “incomprehensible”. She said: “Lewis Edwards abused the trust placed in him as a serving police officer, targeting children online in an avalanche of sustained sexual abuse, grooming them and forcing them to satisfy his own sexual needs.

“Edwards tactics of threatening and blackmailing his victims shows the extent of his depraved actions and lack of remorse towards those he targeted. He believed he was above the law, and his role as a police officer would protect him from investigation and prosecution.

“He was wrong – together the CPS and South Wales Police worked tirelessly to build a strong case against him and see him plead guilty.”

A Snapchat spokesperson said: “Any sexual exploitation of young people is abhorrent and illegal and our hearts go out to the victims in this case. We work in multiple ways to detect and prevent this type of abuse including using cutting-edge detection technology, and we work with police to support investigations.

We have extra protections for under 18s and recently added a new pop-up warning for teens if they are contacted by someone who they don't know. Our Family Centre allows parents to see who their teens are talking to.”
