Ramandeep Kaur Mann, 38, from Derby, laced her husband’s favourite dish with sleeping pills, then slit his throat as he slept - all in a desperate effort to claim his £2 million life insurance policy, a court heard.

The horrific killing took place whilst she was on holiday with her husband Sukhjit Singh, 34, at his mum’s holiday house in India, back on September 2, 2016. They had been staying there with family at the time.

Mann has since been found guilty, along with her accomplice, Gurpreet Singh - and it emerged during proceedings that the two were secretly lovers, as she cheated behind her husband's back. Heartbreakingly, the eyewitness testimony of Mann and Mr Singh’s eldest son was vital in convicting the mum.

After mixing the sleeping pills into the curry, it was eaten by Mr Singh, and the couple’s youngest son Aryan, aged six at the time. But their eldest, Arjun, didn’t eat it. After Mr Singh fell asleep, Mann let her lover Gurpreet in.

The Mail reported that Arjun described in court the fatal moments his mother murdered his father. He reportedly said that his mother had been sleeping in the bed next to his father when he was awoken to the sight of her smothering him with a pillow.

As Arjun didn’t eat the spiked curry, the noise of his father struggling had woken him up. He reportedly described his mother straddling his father before Gurpreet hit him on the head with a hammer. It was then Mann slit his throat.

Gurpreet had been a childhood friend of Mr Singh’s, and the affair between him and Mann began a year prior on a family holiday to Dubai. He lived there and spent time with the family when they visited, reconnecting with the pal he had grown up with. In 2002, Mr Singh had moved to the UK, where his sister also lives, while Gurpreet reportedly went to Dubai.

In 2005, Mr Singh married Mann after they met in Slough - they were said to have moved to South London, and then to Derby. But behind his best friend’s back, Gurpreet began the relationship with Mann during that holiday. The Mail reported that they sustained it through texts and calls afterwards and Mann began plotting how to get out of her marriage. This led to her suggesting that they visit Mr Singh’s mother for a month, and that Gurpreet join them.

Ashok Khanna, lawyer for Mr Singh's family, told the Mail: “This disgusting crime was being plotted by Mann while she was in the UK and Gurpreet in Dubai. Gurpreet was like her husband's brother, they were very close. His family still can't believe that he betrayed them like this. Mann has not shown any remorse and has been very arrogant from the moment she was arrested. She deserves this punishment because this is a woman who drugged her own husband and children so that she could kill him. Who does that kind of thing? But it wasn't just wanting to be with Gurpreet that motivated her. She also stood to make a lot of money from his death.”

Both Ramandeep and Gurpreet were found guilty by the court of murder and the offence of criminal acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention. A judge described the case on Saturday as the "rarest of rare", and said: "Not only Sukhjeet was murdered but the remaining years of an elderly widow was killed, the childhood as well as the youth of two minor children was exterminated. The children have lost the happiness which they had when their father was alive."

Reacting to the verdict, Sukhjeet’s mother told reporters outside the court that she was pleased her son's killer had been given capital punishment. She said: “I feel relieved. My prayers were answered and I got what I was expecting from the court. I was demanding capital punishment for Ramandeep so that no mother’s child dies like this."

A court judgement was reported to have said that Mann stood to gain hugely from a life insurance policy in Mr Singh’s name - and various property the couple had in England and India. After the cold-blooded killing, Gurpreet was reportedly arrested at Delhi airport, trying to board a flight back to Dubai. Meanwhile, Mann was arrested at her mother-in-law’s home after police found the bloody knife used for the killing in the bushes close to where she was staying.

In the aftermath of the horrific murder, legal proceedings in the UK decided that the two boys should stay with Mr Singh’s family - and not Mann’s, despite their protests. Gurpreet dodged a death sentence but was hit with life imprisonment and a fine.

When she received her sentence Mann reportedly screamed that she had been “framed” and protested her innocence.
