Who was Lucie Blackman?

Lucie Blackman was from Sevenoaks, Kent, and lived in Tokyo in Japan. She had been an air hostess with British Airways, but decided to change job and become a club hostess at the Casablanca nightclub.

Lucie would go on paid dates – called dohans – with clients, but after one of these dates on 1 July, 2000 she went missing aged just 21.

She called her friend Louise Phillips several times during the date, before she stopped all contact. Phillips later got a call from a man who said Lucie had joined a cult and she would never hear from her friend again.

Phillips was the person who contacted Lucie’s family in the UK, and they flew out to Tokyo to look for her.

Korean-Japanese property developer Joji Obara became a police suspect around a month later and was questioned about her disappearance as well as the rape and drugging of other women.

He admitted meeting her, but not anything else.

Lucie was found on 9 February, 2001 in a shallow grave under a bathtub in Kanagawa, 30 miles south of Tokyo, but very near Obara’s home. Her body had been cut into 10 pieces and had decomposed, so a cause of death could not be ascertained.

What Happened to Joji Obara?

Joji is alive and kicking and is currently 71 years old.

Obara was arrested in April 2002 and was charged with the abduction, rape resulting in death, and disposal of Lucie’s body. He was also charged for the killing of Australian Carita Ridgway, who had been raped, drugged and killed in 1992.

In 2007 he was jailed for life after being found guilty of multiple rapes, rape resulting in death of Carita Ridgeway, and manslaughter. He had filmed himself on several occasions in the process of date-raping women.

However, he was not jailed for Blackman’s rape and murder, with the court citing lack of evidence.

“To violate the dignity of so many victims, using drugs, in order to satisfy his lust, is unprecedented and extremely evil, and there are no extenuating circumstances for acts based on determined and twisted motives,” said head judge Hiroshi Kadono in a judgment.

He was later found guilty of abduction, dismemberment and disposal of Lucie’s body in the Tokyo high court in 2008.

Lucie’s mother, Jane Steare, said: “This has been a harrowing ordeal, not just for today, but for over eight years. But at last, we have two guilty verdicts and a life sentence. Today, truth and honour have prevailed, not only for Lucie, but for all victims of violent sexual crime.”

Lucie’s father Tim told The Times: “It is fantastic, and completely unexpected, and no less than Lucie deserves. It sounds churlish to say it’s a pity that this didn’t happen years ago, because it’s been such a long haul, such a merciless torture.

But for the police and prosecutors to get him like this is a great achievement.”

Obara appealed against his sentence in 2009 but failed.
