Exposing Parchman: Americas' WORST Prison-Inmates Plead For Help
PARCHMENT PRISON; Americas' WORST Prison
Inmates From Parchman Prison Post Shocking Living Conditions Plead For Help BBC 18 JUNE 2023 A cotton field near Parchman, Mississippi Replacing Slavery The origins of Parchman Farm reach back to the fall of the Confederacy. In 1865, the 13th Amendment abolished slavery, and from one day to the next, the population of free blacks in Mississippi nearly doubled. To whites, especially those with money and power, this posed an existential threat. "The plantation owners, as best they could, wanted blacks to return to the same place as they had been as slaves," said historian David Oshinsky, whose book "Worse Than Slavery" details the creation of Parchman. There was one exception in the 13th Amendment that gave plantation owners an opening: The protection against enslavement didn't extend to convicted criminals. Inmates inside Parchman State Penitentiary, Mississippi’s most infamous prison, describe the inhumane conditions that have them fearing for their lives. They’ve shared videos from inside the prison, exposing the hellish surroundings. Overflowing sewage, rats, mold, and threats of violence are all part of their day-to-day reality. It’s a situation that’s been years in the making. Now, it’s reached breaking point. Prisoner advocates are calling on the federal government to investigate Mississippi’s prison system for possible civil rights violations, saying the violence of recent days highlights deliberate violations of inmates’ constitutional right to be free from cruel and unusual punishment.
