A girl who was abducted at nine-years-old has been found alive and well by a shopkeeper who recognised her from a Netflix documentary.

Dad Ryan Iskerka, who had full custody of his daughter Kayla Unbehaun at the time of her disappearance, went to pick her up from her mum's house in Wheaton, South Elgin on July 5, 2017.

However, she had been kidnapped by her non-custodial mum Heather Unbehaun, 40, and the pair went on the run for years.

The National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children posted missing alerts online after her disappearance and posted digital pictures of how she would look now.

However, she was spotted by a store owner in Asheville, North Carolina last weekend after he recognised her from an episode of Netflix's Unsolved Mysteries

He immediately called police and the mum, who only had visitation rights at the time of her abduction, was arrested.

She is currently being held on a $250,000 bond and is awaiting extradition.

The Kane County State's Attorney charged Heather Unbehaun with one charge of child abduction.

Kayla, who is now aged 15, is currently in protective custody as authorities told her dad Ryan she had been found alive and well.

He said: 'I'm overjoyed that Kayla is home safe.

"I want to thank @ElginPDFD, the National Centre for Missing & Exploited Children and all of the law enforcement agencies who assisted with her case.

"We ask for privacy as we get to know each other again and navigate this new beginning."

Lt. Diana Loveland, from Asheville, North Carolina Police Department, said the discovery was not unusual as officers receive tip-offs all the time.

She told ABC: 'It is unusual but it's good that when someone does suspect that they recognise someone, no matter how old the story might be, that they are not afraid to give us a call so we can come and investigate."

It comes after a DNA test confirmed the identify of a Texan woman who was abducted as a toddler 51 years ago.

Melissa Highsmith , now 53, was abducted from her parents' Fort Worth home in 1971 by her babysitter when she was just 22-months old.

But despite being missing for more than half a century she was eventually reunited with her biological parents Jeffrie Higshmith, 72 and Alta Alpantenco, 73 and her siblings Rebecca Del Bosque, 48; Vicitoria Highsmith, 47; Sharon Highsmith, 45 and Jeffrey Highsmith, 42 on November 26.

Fort Worth Police Department confirmed it had completed official DNA testing which confirmed Melissa Highsmith's identity as the missing child.
