A paedophile snatched a six-year-old as she played outside her family home before sexually assaulting her in a vile attack.

Lewis Jones, 24, from Liverpool, was jailed for life on April 26 after abducting the child from a field where she was playing with her cousins alongside her sister’s house.

Jones was eventually turned in by his crack-cocaine taking father after the sickening attack and had been under investigation at the time for another sex attack.

The children were playing outside on August 17 last year when they spotted Jones sat on a bench, having previously been watching the youngsters build a den.

Jones watched the children playing for around an hour, taking photographs of them whilst also on phone at various times, the court heard.

He went on to remove his t-shirt at one point, which revealed a tattoo on his chest – an identifying mark noticed by one of the children and later recounted to the police.

Jones then approached the youngsters and asked them to help him collect sticks, before grabbing the young girl around the waist, putting his hand over her mouth and running away with her down the disused railway path, away from her cousins, who then went to raise the alarm with the family members.

Family members began searching the area, desperate to locate the young child and they found her a short while later.

Her top was covered in blood and Jones had knocked one of her teeth out during the sick attack - he had also taken photos of her and left her arms, legs, and face covered in cuts and bruises.

Jones was under investigation for another sex attack at the time

Meanwhile, the vile attacker fled on foot and later made his way back to the hotel where he was staying with his dad and within just hours he shared graphic pictures with his former girlfriend.

Greater Manchester Police scoured the area, searching for the suspect and they issued CCTV images of Jones in a bid to track him down.

Jones' own father saw the images and took his son to the police station himself and turned him over.

Originally, Jones lied and denied any wrongdoing but later pleaded guilty to kidnap and two counts of assault by penetration.

Sentencing Jones to life imprisonment, Her Honour Judge Manley referred to Jones as a dangerous individual who was highly likely to commit further, serious offences.

She further stated he would only be apply to first apply for parole in 2035, but he would only ever be released if he could prove to the Parole Board that he was safe to be out with the general public.

In a statement, the Manchester Evening News reported the victim's mother said: "When I first heard about what happened I couldn't stop screaming. I couldn't believe that someone had taken my little girl and assaulted her in such a horrific way.

"I feel helpless because I wasn't there to protect her."

She told how her daughter now has to sleep in bed with her and her husband to feel safe.

She added: "I feel lucky that she is still with us, we could easily have lost her that day. I feel very angry that he (Jones) has done this to us."

The court heard that Jones has no previous sexual offences on his record, but has convictions for common assault and harassment committed when he was a child, as well as criminal damage in 2018.

But, at the time he kidnapped the child, Jones was being investigated after he sexually abused a 12-year-old girl.

He lied to her about his age, telling her he was 14 when he was actually 21. Jones was interviewed by police in June 2020 but was released under investigation, and was not charged until October last year, after the kidnapping.

There were also instances of "very troubling behaviour" when he was a juvenile, including putting his cat in the washing machine which caused it to drown.

Mr Carville said Jones' father is a "user of crack cocaine and heroin" and his mother 'died of Covid'. Jones, previously of Brocklebank Lane, Liverpool, had moved to Manchester to stay with his father who had been rehomed in the city.

Detective Superintendent Gareth Jenkins said: “Firstly, we would like to thank the young victim and her family, who have shown considerable strength and bravery when seeing this prosecution through until sentencing today.

“As a team and a force, we are extremely pleased with today’s result, which has seen Jones, an abhorrent individual, removed from the streets for a considerable length of time.

"My officers acted quickly, securing identification of Jones who was a stranger to Tameside. This was only achieved by securing evidence of his approach and exit to the scene and I am very grateful to them and the officer in the case who worked tirelessly and under significant pressure to get this to where we are today.
