Human remains have been found 'scattered' around a public park in Hull, police have said.

The grisly discovery was made ten days ago, with officers sealing off parts of the park in recent days as they try to determine their origins.

British Transport Police said a cordon was expected to remain in place until next week as investigations continued.

It's understood the remains are not recent and were found at more than one location at Brackley Park in the city.

One theory being pursued by detectives is thought to be that they came from someone who was struck by a train on nearby tracks used by freight trains coming from the city's docks, Hull Live reports.

However, details of the person's sex, identity and how long ago they lost their life have yet to be released.

Police were originally called to the scene at 6pm on Wednesday, December 7 following "reports of human remains found".

The force are now thought to be pursuing a theory that the victim may have been hit by a train at a nearby railway line, which carries freight from Hull Docks.

The timeline of the events is uncertain, with the incident potentially taking place several months or even years ago.

It is not known if police have been able to identify the victim.

Many residents’ questions have remained unanswered since the inquest began, and they have the mood as "anxious" as the police investigation continues.

A local dog walker said there had been growing concern that the crime may be more serious, or that there may be more than one body - after spotting 11 vehicles, a portacabin and three white tents at the scene.

However, BTP has said they are only investigating the remains of one person.

Other neighbours on Brackley Close said they were concerned by the length of time the investigation is taking and parents said they weren't letting their kids out of their sight.

A mum who lives next to the park, named only as Nicola, told Hull Live: "We have lived here for 11 years and walk our dogs every day, if not twice a day, in that park.

"It comes as a shock that something like that would happen on our doorstep. On Wednesday afternoon, we were actually out with the dogs when we saw a person leading a police officer to that area- that must have been what it was for.

"It is a lovely place for families around here but the area has had its trouble before, especially in the summer.

“There will be kids with motorbikes being antisocial or people taking drugs now and then but, usually, it is nice and quiet."

BTP's original statement read: "We’re still searching the area. It’s believed to be the remains of one person – and detectives are following a number of enquiries to identify them."
