Nottingham UK Fire: Man Arrested in Murder Probe After Baby and Toddler Die in Flat Blaze

Police say they have launched a murder investigation after two children were found dead in a flat in Nottinghamshire with a woman fighting for her life in hospital

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after two children died in a fire at a flat in Nottingham that left a woman critically injured.

The youngsters - aged one and three - lost their lives in a blaze that the authorities claim was started deliberately.

The baby and toddler died in the early hours on Sunday morning in the first-floor flat in Fairlisle Close, Clifton, at around 3.17am.

Fire crews tackled the blaze and it was eventually extinguished at around 4am. The victims were taken to the nearby Queen's Medical Centre.

Despite the efforts of medical staff, the two children were pronounced dead at the hospital.

Detective Chief Inspector Greg McGill, who is leading the investigation, said: “This is a deeply tragic incident and we have a large team working tirelessly to understand the full circumstances.

“Whilst we have now made an arrest, the investigation remains at an early stage and we are continuing to appeal to anyone who has even the slightest bit of information, or even CCTV or dash-cam footage, to please come forward.”

Nottinghamshire Police added in a statement: "Detectives investigating a fatal flat fire have arrested a man on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.

"Emergency services were called to reports of a fire in Fairisle Close, Clifton, at 3.17am today (Sunday 20 November 2022).

"The fire was in a first floor flat of a two-storey residential property.

"Neighbouring properties were temporarily evacuated as fire crews tackled the blaze, which was extinguished at around 4am.

"A woman and two young children were treated at the scene by EMAS for smoke inhalation and taken to Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham.

"Sadly the two children, aged three and one, were pronounced dead at the hospital. The woman remains in a critical condition.

"A joint fire and police investigation has concluded the fire was started deliberately."

A local resident, who asked not to be named, was alerted by a fire engine's lights while watching a film, and then saw smoke billowing from the rear windows of the first-floor flat.

He told reporters: "I saw the blue lights and smoke was coming out of the top windows."
