A babysitter has been charged with murder after a 15-month-year-old died in her care after being exposed to drugs.

Emergency services in Athens-Clarke County, Georgia, rushed to a call about an unresponsive baby at a home in Oak Hill Drive, just after 6pm on June 24, it is reported.

Pamala Graves was looking after 15-month old Zamiya Kelly, who was taken to a local hospital and then the Children’s Hospital of Georgia, in Augusta, where the toddler was treated for exposure to drugs.

The hospital in Augusta told police that the child had tested positive for “exposure to fentanyl, opiates and benzodiazepine”.

Then the following day the toddler was pronounced dead and with the cause of death given as “exposure to illegal narcotics”.

While Graves has been charged with one count of felony murder and possession of a controlled substance, police have said that the drug exposure was likely to have been accidental.

Police Lt Shaun Barnett said that detectives identified Graves as “the person that the 15-month-old child was in the care of when the child was exposed to the illegal narcotics,” reported news outlet Law&Crime.

He continued: “The investigation indicates that Graves possessed illegal narcotics in the presence of the child which resulted in the exposure.

“It is not believed that the child was intentionally given the drugs, however, details as to exactly how the child was exposed to the illegal narcotics are still under investigation.”

Graves was charged last Monday and the investigation is ongoing.

Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid, which is up to 100 times stronger than morphine and has similar effects as heroin, while benzodiazepines are sedative medication.

A press release from Athens-Clarke County Police Department stated: "Detectives with the Athens-Clarke County Police Department identified Pamala Graves, 59, of Elberton, GA, as the individual that a 15-month-old child was in the care of when the child was exposed to illegal narcotics.

"Preliminary investigation indicates that the child’s death was a result of the exposure to illegal narcotics. Graves was arrested and charged with Felony Murder and Possession of a Schedule II Controlled Substance."
