The 'Babes in the Wood' child killer Russell Bisho has died four years after finally facing justice.

Bishop, 55, killed Nicola Fellows and Karen Hadaway, both aged nine, after luring them into a park before sexually assaulting and strangling them in 1986, in what became known as The Babes in the Wood murders.

Due to initial errors in the investigation and prosecution he escaped justice for 32 years.

Last spring it was reported Bishop had terminal brain cancer and later was said to be receiving palliative care.

He was reportedly told he was dying of brain cancer which had spread from his bowel.

Bishop died in hospital last night, hours after being rushed in from top security prison HMP Frankland, Co Durham, with breathing difficulties.

His last moments were reportedly spent alone, watched by a pair of prison guards.....

Michelle Johnson, Karen’s mother, said: “May you rot in hell for all eternity you evil wicked monster and I hope your family suffer in the same way as you made me and my family suffer for so long when you took the life of my beautiful nine-year-old daughter, Karen, and her friend Nicky.”

She added: “He put us through decades of pain and grief due to his evil actions. The suffering we have had to endure has been unimaginable.

“He has gone. It was a bad day when that b**tard was born. I don’t know whether this brings any closure for me but at least he is gone, that’s all I can say.”

Michelle, 64, said: “He was an evil, evil man - a monster. He killed my daughter and ruined the lives of so many people.”

She said she was told Bishop had terminal cancer last year and the two families reached out to give him a chance to explain why he had murdered the two girls in 1987.

“We reached out. It might have given him peace of mind to tell us but he didn’t say a thing - not a thing."

She added: “He is past tense now. He is finally out of our lives and I don’t think anyone I know will shed a tear for him.”

In a statement, the family of Nicola Fellows said: “No tears will be shed by our family but we are pleased the cretin has gone to hell and we got justice for our girls before that happened.

“He had every opportunity to admit his guilt but the coward took it with him.”

A source told The Sun: "Bishop spent his last weeks in relative peace - a world away from the torment he has caused the girls' families.

"There will be few tears shed for his passing."

The convicted paedophile was 20 years old when he sexually assaulted and strangled Nicola and Karen in a woodland den.

Bishop carried out his heinous crime in a secluded part of Wild Park, in Brighton, and the bodies were found the following day.

He was sensationally acquitted of their killings in 1986 when DNA evidence failed to stand up in court.

But Bishop was later convicted of the Babes in the Wood killings in 2018 thanks to advancements in DNA identification.

Last October the families of the two girls said they believed he was too much of a “coward” to make a full deathbed confession.

Both the girls’ families said in a joint statement given to the Mirror: “Russell Bishop has a chance to come clean before he dies unless he is a bigger coward than he has always seemed.

“And if he doesn’t have the guts to confess his crimes and admit his guilt, he will be the loser, so our message to him is simple.

“We don’t need your admission of what you did to our beautiful girls. Your refusal doesn’t matter to us.

“We are satisfied with the correct verdicts of the Old Bailey jury in December 2018. You are guilty on both counts of their murders and you are the creation of your own guilt-ridden demise.

"But your admission would show you have finally had the courage to take responsibility for your despicable crimes.”

The jury that convicted him – as well as relatives of Nicola and Karen – heard Bishop confess, for the first time, he carried out a similar terrible attack.

He admitted he kidnapped, raped and tried to murder a seven-year-old girl from Brighton, leaving her for dead at the Devil’s Dyke beauty spot.

But the little girl he snatched from the street had miraculously survived – and her evidence put the former roofer behind bars for life. A Prison Service spokesperson said: “HMP Frankland prisoner Russell Bishop died in hospital on January 20. The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman has been informed.”
