A death row killer shouted "let's go" several times and then vomited during convulsions after he was given a lethal injection during his execution.

John Marion Grant, who killed prison worker Gay Carter, was executed despite huge concerns over the safety of the procedure used to kill him.

Medics went into the death chamber multiple times to wipe away and remove vomit from Grant, who was still breathing, a witness said.

Grant, 60, was declared dead at 4.21pm local time (10.21pm UK time) on Thursday at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary.

It came after the US Supreme Court overruled a decision the same day to grant a stay of execution for Grant and Julius Jones.

The order came less than two hours before Grant was scheduled to be executed.

Witnesses said Grant screamed ‘let’s go, let’s go, let’s go’ before the curtain was lifted between the death chamber and the witness room, reported Newson6.com.

He began to swear and reportedly began convulsing and vomiting.

TV journalist Dan Snyder, who witnessed the execution, said Grant began convulsing almost immediately after the first drug, Midazolam, was administered, CNN reported.

Mr Snyder said: "His entire upper back repeatedly lifted off the gurney. As the convulsions continued, Grant then began to vomit."

Over the next few minutes, medics entered the room several times to wipe away and remove vomit from Grant, who was still breathing, said Mr Snyder.

The second and third drugs were administered a minute later, he added.

It was the first death sentence carried out in more than six years in the American state of Oklahoma due to heated public debate over lethal injections, following three botched executions in 2014 and 2015 using a three-drug protocol that has been questioned over causing a slow and painful death.

Grant was sentenced to death in 1998 for the killing of Ms Carter, a member of staff at the prison where he was serving time for robbery, whom he stabbed 16 times.

The Carter family released a statement after the execution.

It read: "At least now we are starting to get justice for our loved ones. The death penalty is about protecting any potential future victims.

"Even after Grant was removed from society, he committed an act of violence that took an innocent life. I pray that justice prevails for the other victims' loved ones. My heart and prayers go out to you all. Stay strong."

For his last meal Grant requested two bacon cheeseburgers with onions, tomatoes, pickles, lettuce and mustard, half a gallon of Neapolitan ice cream, a large bag of barbeque flavoured crisps, a large package of Nutter Butter sandwich cookies, and a 2-litre bottle of Mr. Pibb, according to the Oklahoma Department of Corrections.

Grant has a lengthy criminal history dating back to when he was 11 years old, having spent time in the juvenile system before going to the adult corrections system.

After Grant died on Thursday, his lawyer, Sarah Jernigan, said he had tried to atone and understand his actions "more than any other client I have worked with."

She said he was a victim of brutality both at home and at the hands of Oklahoma's youth detention system, and did not receive mental health treatment, ultimately murdering prison employee Ms Carter in 1998 while incarcerated for another crime.

The last-minute intervention from the US Supreme Court overturned a stay of execution for Grant and Julius Jones, who is scheduled to be put to death on November 18.
