Originally founded by Roman Catholic missionaries as the Mission San Antonio de Valero, the Alamo was initially established for the education of converted Native American residents in the mid 1700’s.
Secularised in 1793, then abandoned, the mission became a base for various causes, including revolutionaries and rebels.
The Alamo site was then developed as a fortress which came under attack in 1836 from self-proclaimed Mexican dictator, General Santa Anna.
