'I Bought an Abandoned Town - Then Hotel Burnt Down Hours After Ghost Sighting

EXCLUSIVE: Brent Underwood bought Cerro Cordo in California, an old mining town, for $1.4million and set his heart on restoring it so it can be enjoyed by future generations

Daily Mirror UK, 9 SEP 2020.

Brent fell in love with the town and it's unusual history straight away (Image: Brent Underwood/Instagram)

When Brent Underwood bought an abandoned town he knew he was about to undertake a huge project.

Cerro Cordo in California has just 22 buildings but it comes with a chilling past, with its former residents left to govern themselves resulting in at least one murder a week.

Bullet holes still cover the walls of many of the buildings, and Brent's home is above an old collapsed mine which still holds the bodies of the men who died in the tragic accident.

People from neighbouring towns claim it's haunted, and their terrifying tales and several spooky sightings have resulted in the town being the subject of a paranormal TV show.

But Brent had never seen any of the reported ghosts, however a fire at the town's hotel has started the rumour mill up again.

Speaking to Mirror Online, he explains that he was woken by what sounded like fireworks at about 3am back in June.

"It was such a foreign sound and feeling to be woken up to, I thought maybe some kids had come to town and set off fireworks in the middle of the town as a prank.

"I looked out the window and the side of the mountain had a red glow on it, so then my mind jumped to maybe someone had shot off some flares.

"It was just impossible in the moment to think that something could be burning down.

"When I got out of my room and looked out the window that faces the hotel, I saw flames 60 feet in the air. It was full engulfed from floor to ceiling and I could feel the heat even 50 yards away or so.

"I remember yelling out “Oh no!!” to nobody in particular."

Brent hires a caretaker, Robert, to look after the site and he then began to panic about him.

He goes on: "I couldn’t see his cabin through the flames so my mind jumped to the worst and was scared his cabin might be on fire as well. It is only about 50 or so yards from the hotel as well.

"It turns out he was thinking the same for me because he couldn’t see the cabin I was in through the flames either.

"I ran around the back side of the hotel and luckily saw Robert’s cabin and Robert."

They called 911 but their remote location meant they knew it would be a while until help arrived, so they set to work doing whatever they could to stop the blaze spreading.

"We recently got goats and I had brought maybe 50 gallons of water up to their pen in five gallon buckets, so I ran there and kept shuttling that back to a hill the fire was rapidly climbing up.

"The hill ended at another house, the Gordon Mansion, which was originally built in 1910. I kept throwing water on the fire on the hill, over and over, waiting for the fire department.

"The fire crept within 5ft of the house. All the buildings here are very dry since we’re in the high desert so even a spark could have taken the Gordon Mansion and all the other buildings behind it. So it was really important it didn’t continue to spread.

All the structures are extremely old, with rumours of spooky goings on (Image: cerrogoldmines.com)

"I ended up melting the front of my shoes and using every five gallon bucket, water bottle, and any liquid we had to stop the fire going up the hill.

"The fire department got there about 1.5 hours later, which felt like an eternity."

The blaze completely destroyed the hotel, which dated back to 1871 - and this is where the spooky details begin.

The hotel was built on June 15 - the same date it burnt down decades later.

Brent spent lockdown in the town alone after getting snowed in (Image: cerrogoldmines.com)

Brent, who is sharing the town's story on his popular TikTok page, said: "Another weird coincidence in a town that has more than its share of weird coincidences.

"It was among the most haunted places up here and of course ghost rumors are already flying among people who keep up with the town.

"Earlier in the day Robert had been giving a guy a tour of the hotel and after exiting the guy turned to Robert and said “did you see that?” and Robert agreed that they had both seen an apparition in the hotel kitchen that had turned to the left.

The views are stunning (Image: cerrogoldmines.com)

"The hotel kitchen was an active place for a ghost named Alphonse Beniot.

"It’s devastating what happened and traumatizing to see your hopes, dreams, life savings, and irreplaceable American history literally go up in flames in front of you.

"The silver linings are nobody got hurt, we have the original blueprints from the hotel, and will have to rebuild. Like it or not, this is part of the town’s history now and we have to find a way to move forward."

When Brent bought the town, where he accidentally spent lockdown after getting snowed in, he hoped to restore it while keeping the history.

He said: "My hope is that this town is here in 500 years or more for many more generations to learn from and enjoy.

"At that time there will be a 500 year old hotel there. Sure the other buildings will be 600 years old, but it will all be part of Cerro Gordo’s history.

"Unfortunately fires are part of Western mining town’s history. Bodie has burned down before, Tombstone a handful of times. The buildings weren’t necessarily made for longevity and the dry climate and lack of water make it always a hazard.

"What we’re doing now is making sure nothing like this ever happens again. We’ve already replaced most of the old electrical wiring throughout the town, as that led to the first fire.

He employs a caretaker who lives there full time (Image: cerrogoldmines.com)

"We did that starting even the week it burned down. The new hotel will have fire suppression systems and we are exploring fire suppression for the rest of the town as well. It’s our top priority that every building still at Cerro Gordo remains for as long as possible.

"I’ve always seen the timeline of the project in decades. I think the startup culture of today makes it normal to see things in month-over-month growth, but that isn’t the case here.

"I’ll be working on Cerro Gordo until I die, then the next generation will continue working on the town. When you have that perspective you can handle setbacks like this a bit better.

"We’re in it for the long haul and aren’t going anywhere.

"[The fire] was a hell of a curveball, but we’ll make it back. What other option do we have?

Finding Ghosts In An Abandoned Mining Town (Cerro Gordo)

Cerro Gordo was one of the deadliest towns in the American West.

Ghost Town Living..5 NOV 2020

At it's peak, the town had a reported murder per week.

A local judge described the residents of the town as:

"Lawless ruffians who with murder in their hearts and the implements of death strapped upon their persons, congregate in public places, ever ready to discharge their death-dealing weapons upon the unoffending and unarmed citizens."

Because of all the death, the town has a rich history in paranormal activity. In this video I tell the story of the famous 'ghosts' of Cerro Gordo, and try to find them.

If you own a ghost town with reported paranormal activity, you have to go hunting for ghosts at least once.
