He has also been banned from making any further appeals against the decision. The 68-year-old, who is known as Britain's most dangerous prisoner, appealed to be allowed to spend the rest of his prison days with the "general population". But chiefs ruled him too dangerous to mix with prisoners and guards at HMP Wakefield in West Yorkshire, the Daily Star reports. Maudsley, who murdered child molesters, will now spend the rest of his life, 23 hours a day, locked alone inside a glass box beneath the jail. He sleeps on a concrete slab, uses a toilet and sink bolted to the floor and has a table and chair made of compressed cardboard. An insider told the Daily Star: "He was told no last month but appealed against the decision and wanted to spend Christmas in the presence of other humans. But he's just been told no for the final time. "Being alone for that long does something to you. Maudsley's underground cell is a specially constructed 5.5 metres by 4.5 metre space with bullet proof glass cage that was built in 1983, nearly ten years after his prison sentence began. The convicted killer, from Toxteth, Liverpool, was just 21 when he committed his first murder in 1974. When he was first locked up, Maudsley was sent to Broadmoor Hospital, which houses some of the UK's most violent prisoners. After three relatively quiet years behind bars, he seized an opportunity to attack child molester David Francis in 1977, with the help of fellow prisoner David Cheeseman. After hiding Darwood's body under a bed, he then crept into the cell of Bill Roberts, 56, who had sexually abused a seven-year-old girl. He stabbed Roberts, hacked his skull with a makeshift dagger and smashed his head against a wall. He wrote in a letter: "What purpose is served by keeping me locked up 23 hours a day? "Why even bother to feed me and to give me one hour's exercise a day? Who actually am I a risk to? "As a consequence of my current treatment and confinement, I feel that all I have to look forward to is indeed psychological breakdown, mental illness and probable suicide. "Why can't I have a budgie instead of flies, ****roaches and spiders which I currently have. I promise to love it and not eat it? "Why can't I have a television in my cell to see the world and learn? Why can't I have any music tapes and listen to beautiful classical music? "If the Prison Service says no then I ask for a simple cyanide capsule which I shall willingly take and the problem of Robert John Maudsley can easily and swiftly be resolved." The Ministry of Justice said it does not comment on the cases of individual prisoners. |

Robert Mawdsley, 69, dubbed Han**nibal the Cannibal, has existed in the same miserable way for more than 16,400 consecutive days. On July 28, 1978, already serving life for double murder, Mawdsley killed two fellow prisoners in Wakefield jail. He told a guard: “There’ll be two short on the roll call.” Since that day almost 45 years ago he has spent his time in solitary. In 1983, after prison staff, including barbers, declined to see him alone, a speciall cell was built at Wakefield. At 18ft by by 15ft, it is slightly bigger than average. It has large bulletproof windows and a table and chair made of compressed cardboard. The lavatory and sink are bolted to the floor while the bed is a concrete slab. A steel door opens into a small cage within the cell, encased in thick Perspex, with a small slot at the bottom through which he is passed food. It is said to bear an uncanny likeness to the cell of cannibal killer Hannibal Lecter, played by Anthony Hopkins in the 1991 film Silence of the Lambs. Mawdsley got his Han**nibal the Cannibal name amid claims he dug a spoon into the brain of one of his victims, an allegation he always denied. There is no Hollywood glamour for the real-life Hannibal. He spends 23 out of every 24 hours in the tiny space he once des**cribed as “like being buried alive in a coffin”. In the early days of his confinement he wrote to newspapers campaigning for better treatment. In 2000, he went to court in a bid to be “allowed to die”. In a letter he asked why he couldn’t have a pet budgie, promising to love it and “not eat it”. Like Dr Lecter, the literary creation made famous in the hit movie, Mawdsley is said to love books, poetry and art. His nephew Gavin Mawdsley, from Liverpool, told Channel 5’s Evil Behind Bars that his uncle had accepted his fate.Gavin said: “He’s asking to be on his own because he knows what can happen. “Put him on a wing surrounded by rapists and paedophiles – I know this because he told us – he was going to kill as many paedophiles as he could. “I’m not condoning what he did. He did very bad things. But he didn’t kill a child or woman. An innocent person didn’t go to work that day and never return home.
