The man, who has not been identified, appeared in court on Saturday and is being held in custody after also being accused of terrorism charges.

Foreign intelligence services flagged that he may have been planning an imminent terror attack, Israels Channel 12 reported.

The arrested Briton was described by local media as being of Azerbaijani descent, and that he had links to Irans powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps

He allegedly had Britains Akrotiri base, home to the RAFs Typhoons, and Cypruss own Andreas Papandreou air base, which is sometimes used by the US air force, under surveillance since mid April.

Today, following a co-ordinated operation by the British police headquarters, a person was arrested who seems to be related to terrorist acts, the Cypriot government said. They added that a regional court had issued a detention order for criminal acts related, among others, to terrorism and espionage

The man was arrested in the Zakaki suburb of the coastal city of Limassol, just six miles from the British base.

World events have drawn the UK increasingly into Irans crosshairs which have in recent years and previously been firmly focused on anti regime dissidents, Jewish targets and Israel.

As junior partner to America, which has been dubbed by Tehran as the great Satan this makes us stand out as somewhere where people can be targeted in the future.

But in the recent past there have been many attempts at violence against Iranian dissidents here, Jewish sites and people and, it is thought, the Israeli embassy. The UKs intelligence and security committee chairman Lord Beamish has warned Iran poses a wide ranging, persistent and unpredictable threat to the UK, UK nationals and UK interests

It is the word unpredictable that is particularly alarming as perhaps it means the library of possible targets for Iran has widened in recent years. Any attack on narrowly drawn up targets can harm British civilians but there may be a suspicion in our intelligence agencies that Tehran is widening its ambitions
