TikTok says it will go dark in the United States on Sunday, threatening access to the app for 170 million users, unless the government provides assurances that a law mandating its sale or ban won't be used to punish service providers.
After months of legal tussles, the US Supreme Court on Friday upheld a law that would ban the popular video-sharing platform in the name of national security, unless its Chinese owners reach an 11th-hour deal to sell it to non-Chinese buyers by Sunday.
Only months after overwhelmingly backing the law, lawmakers and officials were now fretting about the ban, with all eyes on whether US President-elect Donald Trump can swoop in and find a way to save the app.
From teenage dancers to grandmothers sharing cooking tips, TikTok has been embraced for its ability to transform ordinary users into global celebrities when a video goes viral.
It is also appreciated by Trump, who has credited the app with connecting him to younger voters, contributing to his election victory in November.
Trump discussed TikTok with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday and said he would need more time to find a solution.
The administration of outgoing President Joe Biden, who leaves office on Monday, has said it will leave the matter to Trumps incoming government.
After the court defeat, TikTok CEO Shou Chew appealed to Trump, thanking him for his commitment to work with us to find a solution
TikTok has been lobbying furiously to thwart the laws implementation, with Chew set to attend Trumps inauguration on Monday

TikTok stopped working in the US late on Saturday, shortly before a federal ban on the Chinese-owned short-video app was due to take effect.
The app was no longer available on Apples iOS App Store or Googles Play Store. The US Congress passed a law in April mandating that parent company ByteDance either sell TikTok to a non-Chinese owner or face a total shutdown. It chose the latter.
TikTok said that divestment is simply not possible: not commercially, not technologically, not legally. The company held that line until the very end.
The apps disappearance has been five years in the making. Donald Trump first proposed a ban on TikTok in mid-2020 via executive order, which did not succeed.
Various members of Congress proposed measures that would do the same, only one passed. The Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act became law, mandating TikTok be sold or be banned.
A law banning TikTok has been enacted in the U.S. Unfortunately, that means you cant use TikTok for now.

TikTok said on Sunday that it was restoring services in the US after Donald Trump pledged earlier in the day to give the video app a reprieve on its US ban. Trump wrote on Truth Social that after taking office on Monday he would sign an executive order allowing the Chinese-owned video app additional time to find a buyer before facing a total shutdown, and proposing that the US or an American firm take a 50% ownership stake.
By doing this, we save TikTok, keep it in good hands and allow it to say (sic) up, Trump said. Without US approval, there is no TikTok.
With our approval, it is worth hundreds of billions of dollars ? maybe trillions.
TikTok stopped working in the US for 170 million users late on Saturday.
Congress passed a law in April ordering TikTok, which is currently owned by ByteDance, to either sell to a non-Chinese owner or face being removed from the US, with the app choosing to shut itself down after the US supreme court ruled to uphold the ban on Friday. Under the law, companies would be blocked from distributing, maintaining or updating the app ? for instance, in effect banning it from app stores ? if TikTok failed to secure a sale.
From Saturday night until Sunday afternoon, a pop-up message to the app?s US users read: A law banning TikTok has been enacted in the US. Unfortunately that means you can?t use TikTok for now.
Trump had pushed for a ban under his previous presidency but after finding a large audience on the app during his 2024 presidential campaign that PROMOTED HIM, he attempted to intervene on TikToks behalf at the 11th hour.
The companys CEO, Shou Zi Chew, released a video thanking Trump for his efforts to keep the app active in the US. He is expected to attend Trumps inauguration ceremony in person.
After Trumps message on Sunday, the company said in a statement that it was in the process of restoring service, adding:
We thank President Trump for providing the necessary clarity and assurance to our service providers that they will face no penalties providing TikTok to over 170 million Americans and allowing over 7 million small businesses to thrive. Its a strong stand for the First Amendment and against arbitrary censorship. We will work with President Trump on a long-term solution that keeps TikTok in the United States
