Evil online predator Alexander McCartney was only 14 when he started torturing thousands of young people across the world. the youngest was FOUR.

The full extent of the County Down mans horrific crimes emerged on Friday as he was jailed for a catalogue of abuse which destroyed so many lives.

Now aged 26, police believe McCartneys first started targeting young girls online in January 2013, three months before his 15th birthday. At the time, he would have been a fourth year pupil at secondary school.

Over the next six years, he contacted around 3,000 victims through the Snapchat messaging app.

From his bedroom of his home at Lissummon Road near Newry, McCartney initially pretended to be a young girl to earn their trust.

In a process known as catfishing, he later asked the young people to send him nude photos of themselves.

Once he had the images, he would threaten to put them online if his young victims did not hand over money or send him more explicit photos.

One of his victims was 12-year-old Cimarron Thomas from West Virginia in the US.

While her identify had previously been protected, Cimarrons family allowed her to be named publicly for the first time this week as the impact of McCartneys crimes were outlined in court.

It was on May 7, 2018 when Cimarron was caught in McCartneys evil web. He contacted her online, complimented her on her appearance, and began grooming her before she sent him an intimate photo.

Belfast Crown Court heard that during the first abusive interaction, he kept her online for an hour and 45 minutes, demanding sexual and degrading images.

He told her if she didnt send him more photos, he would publish the ones he already had on the internet.

McCartney continued to torture Cimarron over the next four days. She pleaded for him to leave her alone but he told her to dry your eyes and involve her younger sister, aged nine, in a sex act.

Cimarron refused and said she would rather kill herself. McCartney then put up a countdown clock, telling her goodbye and good luck.

Three minutes later, Cimarron was found by her sister, who entered the room after she thought she heard a balloon pop. She had shot herself in the head with the familys legally-held firearm.

However, her death was not the end of the heartbreak for Cimarrons family.

Her father, Ben, also died by suicide in January 2020 after struggling to live with the heartbreak of losing his beloved daughter. He died without ever knowing the truth of why Cimarron had taken her own life.

In the US, a memorial group was established in honour of Cimarron and Ben to raise awareness around suicide.

An annual fundraising walk has been held following their tragic deaths.

Cimarron was born in Lock Haven in Pennsylvania before she moved with her parents and sister to the town of Bruceton Mills in West Virginia. At the time of her death, she was in seventh grade at Bruceton Middle School and was a member of the school?s volleyball team.

Her death devastated her family and many friends.
