How Worlds’ Largest Sub-Sea Cable Could Boost Internet Resilience For Billions
What Are Undersea Cables? And What Does The Internet Have to Do With Them? South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia and Ivory Coast were hit by major internet outages BBC News 9 MAY 2024 In this Jan. 22, 2011, file photo, people stand on a breakwater, with a Venezuelan flag, left, and a Cuban flag as a specialized ship rolls out a fiber-optic cable, suspended from buoys, off La Guaira, Venezuelan coast. Modern society probably couldn’t survive without the internet. Businesses, schools and families rely on it to complete daily tasks. But despite this reliance, most people don’t understand how the internet actually works or what it has to do with cables on the ocean floor. Africas’ Internet Dilemma Last week, the internet crashed in Central and West Africa, and people there continue to experience disruptions in service, per The Guardian. It reported that at least a dozen countries have been impacted, with severe outages being seen along the Ivory Coast. The Nigerian Communications Commission shared that the internet outages were a result of damage to undersea cables running along the West African coast, according to the BBC. Undersea cables can get damaged or even cut by debris. A ship is preparing to set sail from France to lay the next section of the largest ever sub-sea internet cable. The 2Africa cable is an incredible 45,000 km long and stretches around the entire continent. But even as the world celebrates ambitious projects like getting more people online, internet freedom is on the decline around the world. |
