Ukraines' security service caught an undercover Russian spy sneaking into a top secret drone school in Ukraine as he covertly took photographs of military positions

A key Russian spy trying to sneak undercover into one of Ukraines’ top secret “drone schools” has been seized after a major sting.

Ukraines’ security service officers caught the man in the centre of downtown Kyiv trying covertly to photograph military positions on behalf of Moscow. He had been recruited online by Russian President Vladimir Putin ’s FSB spies after posting unsupportive comments on the internet about Ukraine.

Moscow-based spooks then contacted him and recruited him as an agent, telling him to infiltrate a drone school. The man was photographed being frog-marched to jail by two burly Ukrainian security men wearing balaclavas to hide their identities.

Sources told the Daily Mirror the arrest of the 49 year-old man is “hugely significant” as it shows how desperate Russia is to try and destroy Ukraine’s drone war machine.

The insider told us: “Ukraines’ drone schools are expanding and Russia is desperate to try and find out where they are based. They want to undermine the drone attacks as they are having a devastating effect on Russian troops on the frontline.”

It is thought the arrested man is a businessman based in Kyiv and if found guilty he could be given a life sentence behind bars. It is believed he had been put on the payroll of the FSB.

Drone technology has played a major role in Ukraine’s counter-offensive, blowing up many tanks, troops and artillery positions by either dropping small bombs or pinpointing positions.

After the arrest the SBU Ukrainian intelligence agency said in a statement: “The agent was gathering intelligence about the special units of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and the Security Service of Ukraine, specifically those specialising in the use of unmanned aerial vehicles.

“After gaining admission to the institution his mission was to identify the locations of the training grounds of the defence forces, where cadets are instructed in operating attack and reconnaissance drones.”

It is believed Ukraine will train 10,000 drone pilots in the next year to wreak havoc on frontline Russian troops. Investigators have formally charged the suspect with treason committed under martial law.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said: “This is a clear warning to all traitors - retribution awaits.”
