Hacker Russian Hacker Takes Down Royal Familys' Website For 'Attack on PEDOS'

Russian Hacker Takes Down Royal Familys' Official Website in Cyber Attack

The official Royal Family website went down for around 90 minutes on Sunday morning, with Russian hacker KillMilk taking responsibility, posting the supposed takedown was an "attack on paedophiles"

BBC 2 OCT 2023

A Russian hacker has taken responsibility after the Royal Family's official website went offline for around 90 minutes.

The URL royal.uk was displaying an error message this morning, while hacktivist KillMilk posted news of their apparently successful "attack". They added the supposed takedown was an "attack on paedophiles". It appears to have gone down from just after 10.20am but is now back live, though was quite slow to load initially.

There have also reportedly been similar attacks on public transport systems today in Birmingham, Brighton, South Tyneside and South Yorkshire. It is unclear if they are all linked to KillMilk.

KillMilk is the leader of the Russian hacktivist DDoS collective KillNet, and earlier this year announced on Telegram the establishment of “Black Skills,” a Private Military Hacking Company. The name is believed to be inspired by private military companies in Russia - primarily the Wagner Group - which have been used during Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine. Some reports suggest KillMilk's aspiration is for the Kremlin to use the resources of the cyber mercenary group.

This error message occurs when trying to access the site

KillNet is known for its Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) campaigns against countries supporting Ukraine, especially NATO countries, since the start of the war in February last year. DDoS attacks can cause thousands of connection requests and packets to be sent to the target server or website per minute, slowing down or even stopping vulnerable systems.

The KillNet attacks don't usually cause major damage but can lead to outages lasting several hours or even days. The collective has previously threatened to target organisations in the Healthcare and Public Health sector, including the sale of health and personal data of American people.

In May last year a 23-year-old supposed KillNet member was arrested in connection with attacks on Romanian government websites. In response, the group threatened to target life-saving ventilators in British hospitals if their demands weren't met. Threats were also made against the UK Ministry of Health.

A royal source told the Mirror earlier this morning: "The website is down due to a denial of service attack. A denial of service attacks see sites bombarded with traffic, as opposed to hacking, which sees people actually gain access to a site. There has been no access to the royal household systems or content. It is impossible to say at this stage who is responsible." Meanwhile, IT experts for the royal household were working to get the website back up and running.

It comes after experts warned international cyber terrorists were a potential threat to King Charles' coronation in May. It was feared hackers in Russia or Iran might try take the live broadcasts of the ceremony off the air and score a propaganda coup. At the time, broadcasters were said to be taking preventative measures to protect their systems, reported the Daily Telegraph.

In 2011, a plot to disrupt Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding was foiled by the Met Police. It involved efforts to crash the Royal couple's website while the ceremony was being streamed in a DDOS attack. When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle married in 2018, intelligence reports suggested a similar attack was planned.
