A senior software engineer at Google jumped to his death from the company's headquarters in New York City, authorities have said.

The 31-year-old, was found lying face down on the ground outside the building in the Manhattan area of the city at around 11.30pm yesterday.

Police responded to multiple calls of a man lying unconscious on the ground next to the building, in the Chelsea area of the famous borough.

He was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead by medical staff.

It is believed he fell from the 14th floor, where investing officers found handprints on the ledge of the floor, which is an open-air terrace.
