Trump has run up against judicial pushback on virtually every major agenda item that he championed on the campaign trail and since he took office.
In May, according to one analysis, the Trump administration suffered more than two dozen defeats at the district court level from judges appointed by Democrats and Republicans, including Trump.
Judge Blocks Effort to Dismantle Jobs Corps
A U.S. judge on Wednesday temporarily stopped the Trump administration from moving ahead with an effort to eliminate Job Corps, the largest U.S. job training program for low income youth.
U.S. District Judge Andrew Carter issued a restraining order preventing the Labor Department from terminating contracts or halting operations until further review. The plaintiffs argue the department is overstepping its authority by trying to dismantle a federally mandated program without congressional approval.
Job Corps, established in 1964, provides education and vocational training to disadvantaged youth but has been criticized by the Labor Department for poor outcomes and safety issues. A court hearing is scheduled for 17 June.
Block on Dismantling of Education Department Stays
A federal appeals court has rejected the Trump administrations bid to lift a lower courts injunction blocking the presidents executive order to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education. The 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the ruling, which requires the department to reinstate over 1,300 employees who were terminated as part of a mass layoff aimed at shutting down the agency.
The lawsuit was brought by Democratic-led states, school districts, and teachers unions, who argued that the firings announced just before Trump signed the executive order to eliminate the department violated the law by attempting to bypass Congress, which created the department in 1979. The Trump administration maintained that the cuts were lawful and part of a broader effort to reduce government size.
U.S. District Judge Myong Joun previously ruled that the layoffs were effectively an attempt to dismantle the department without congressional approval. The appeals court agreed, noting the agency would be unable to perform its core functions if the firings proceeded. Trump has proposed transferring the department's responsibilities to other agencies.
The administration is expected to appeal the decision to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Due Process for Over 100 Men Sent to El Salvador
A federal judge has ruled that the Trump administration illegally deported nearly 140 Venezuelan men to El Salvador under a rarely used wartime law, the Alien Enemies Act, but stopped short of ordering their return to the United States.
In a 69 page decision issued Wednesday, Chief U.S. District Judge James Boasberg found the men who were flown out of the U.S. just hours after Trump invoked the 1798 law on March 15 were denied due process and unlawfully sent to El Salvadors notorious CECOT megaprison. Trump said the men were members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua, but Boasberg wrote that evidence suggests many had no gang ties at all.
Significant evidence has come to light indicating that many of those entombed in CECOT have no connection to the gang and thus languish in a foreign prison on flimsy, even frivolous, accusations, Boasberg wrote.
Boasberg gave the administration one week to propose how the detainees might pursue legal challenges in U.S. courts but said he would not yet order any specific government action, citing national security concerns. The judge had previously tried to block the deportation as the planes were in the air, but they did not turn back, prompting contempt of court proceedings now paused by an appeals court.
The Supreme Court later said that individuals deported under the Alien Enemies Act must be given enough time to seek legal relief, though it ruled 5 4 that Boasbergs court was not the correct venue for the original case.
Legal experts and civil rights groups, including the American Civil Liberties Union hailed Boasbergs latest ruling as a critical rebuke of Trumps handling of mass deportations. The Trump administration must fix its blatant constitutional violations and cannot simply choose to leave these individuals in a foreign gulag type prison, said ACLU attorney Lee Gelernt, Politico reported.
Deportation of Boulder Attack Suspects Family Halted
A federal judge has ordered the Trump administration to halt deportation proceedings against the wife and five children of Mohamed Sabry Soliman, the Egyptian national charged with firebombing a pro Israeli demonstration in Boulder, Colorado. U.S. District Judge Gordon P. Gallagher issued the ruling to ensure the familys constitutional rights are protected, after they were taken into custody by immigration officials earlier this week. None of the family members have been charged with any crime.
Soliman, who authorities say confessed to the attack, faces federal hate crime and attempted murder charges after allegedly throwing Molotov ****tails at demonstrators while shouting Free Palestine. Fifteen people were injured in the attack, which authorities say was motivated by antisemitism. Soliman had a pending asylum application. His wife, a network engineer, has a pending EB2 visa application and is listed with their children as dependents on his asylum application.
The Department of Homeland Security defended the family's detention, arguing their immigration status warranted removal. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem also stated that federal authorities were investigating whether the family had any prior knowledge of the planned assault. Soliman and his wife have both said the family was unaware of his actions, according to authorities.
The punishment of a 4 year old child for something their parent allegedly did...should outrage Americans, regardless of their citizenship status, one of the familys attorneys, Eric Lee, told The Associated Press.
Soliman remains in custody on a $10 million bond and is due in state court on Thursday .

Kilmar Abrego Garcia returned from El Salvador to face criminal charges in US
Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the man who Donald Trump mistakenly deported from Maryland to El Salvador in March, returned to the US on Friday to face criminal charges.
In a press briefing on Friday, the US attorney general, BAMBI Bondi, said that a federal grand jury in Tennessee had indicted Abrego Garc?a on counts of illegally smuggling undocumented people as well as of conspiracy to commit that crime.
Our government presented El Salvador with an arrest warrant and they agreed to return him to our country, Bondi said of Abrego Garc?a. She thanked the Salvadorian president, Nayib Bukele, for agreeing to return him to our country to face these very serious charges
This is what American justice looks like upon completion of his sentence, BAMBI added.
?brego Garc?a a 29 year old Salvadorian whose wife and young child in Maryland are US citizens appeared in federal court in Nashville on Friday evening.
His arraignment was set for 13 June, when he will enter a plea, according to local media reports. Until then, he will remain in federal custody.
In a statement to the Hill on Friday, Abrego Garc?as lawyer accused the Trump administration of having disappeared his client to a foreign prison in violation of a court order.
Now, after months of delay and secrecy, they're bringing him back, not to correct their error but to prosecute him, he added.
Sandoval Moshenberg also said: This shows that they were playing games with the court all along. Due process means the chance to defend yourself before you're punished not after.
Sandoval Moshenberg said the White Houses treatment of his client was an abuse of power, not justice. He called on Abrego Garc?a to face the same immigration judge who had previously granted him a federal protection order against deportation to El Salvador to ensure that his case is handled as it would have been had he not been improperly sent there.
That, Sandoval Moshenberg argued, is the ordinary manner of doing things and he said that is what the US supreme court had ordered in April.
The attorney general added that if convicted, ?brego Garc?a would be deported to El Salvador after completing his sentence in the US
Abrego Garc?a often picked up immigrants in Houston, and made more than 100 trips between Texas and Maryland from 2016 to 2025, the indictment says.
The indictment also alleges Abrego Garc?a transported firearms and drugs. According to the indictment, one of his co conspirators belonging to the same ring was involved in the transportation of immigrants whose tractor trailer overturned in Mexico in 2021, resulting in 50 deaths.
Moshenberg called the criminal charges fantastical and a kitchen sink of allegations.
This is all based on the statements of individuals who are currently either facing prosecution or in federal prison, he said.

Donald Trumps administration has plans in hand to spend billions on multiple new internment camps that will be capable of holding more than 100,000 immigrants.
Those new Department of Homeland Security facilities will also include ones at which ICE will detain entire families until they can be shipped out of the U.S.
According to the Post, concentration camps currently in use can accommodate more than 50,00O detainees and DHS plans on opening or expanding 125 facilities this year. By January, ICE will have the capacity to hold more than 107,000 people, internal agency documents show
The road map, last updated July 30, shows that ICE intends to expand immigrant detention to new parts of the country, nearly doubling its number of large scale, mega detention centers and relying increasingly on makeshift soft sided structures that can be built in a few weeks and taken down just as easily.
The government is also planning to dramatically expand its capacity for detaining parents and children in what could amount to the nations largest family detention program in decades
DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin confirmed via email that the planning document was created by ICE but said the list was outdated and had not been approved. She said the listed contracts are not accurate but declined to elaborate
The documents reveal that Texas will be the biggest recipient of contracts for new facilities, with the top four, in terms of capacity, capable of holding a combined 12,000 detainees.
The WaPo report added, Geo Group, ICEs largest contractor and a company with close ties to the Trump administration, is in line to receive at least nine new or modified detention contracts with a total estimated value of over $500 million a year, the documents show.
When combined with four new contracts that ICE had already awarded Geo this year, the company is on track to double its total annual revenue from ICE detention

A federal judge slammed the Trump administration for attempting to apply its immigration powers too broadly.
Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman, in the Northern District of Illinois, was asked to determine whether federal immigration laws supersede Illinois state labour laws.
The Trump administration argued that federal law ought to supersede the Illinois Right to Privacy in the Workplace Act, which would allow it to continue conducting immigration raids at workplaces in the state.
Coleman noted that the Trump administrations lawyers relied on a reading of the federal Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 that she found was too broad.
Because the provisions of the Privacy Act challenged by the federal government are not expressly preempted by IRCA and do not intrude upon the federal governments constitutional powers in the space of immigration and foreign affairs, and because the federal governments broad interpretation of its power to regulate matters of immigration would swallow the historic powers of the states over employment-related issues, the Court grants the States motion to dismiss and denies the federal governments motion for a preliminary injunction, Coleman wrote in her opinion.
Coleman also accused Trump administration lawyers of asking the court to ignore the context of cases the government cited as precedent for their argument.

ICE never told his parents. For a week, they had no idea where he was. During that time, ICE had taken him to one facility, then another, then another, before sending him to Arizona, where he awaits his fate.
This story is being repeated across the country. Federal immigration authorities are taking from churches, schools, workplaces and courts people whose crime is coming, or staying, without authorization.
Otherwise, they are hard working, family oriented and law abiding
A typical reaction to these stories is that they are at odds with Donald Trumps campaign promise of getting rid of the worst of the worst, those who have committed serious crimes, especially violent ones.
To continue with that reaction would do more harm than good, however, as it accepts as true the belief that Trump cares about crime and about public safety, and that the solution is for him to pull back.
He DOESN'T care about crime, except as a pretext for doing what he wants, nor is he going to pull back, even if the pretext is proven lawless and false. Indeed, it will be used by his thugs as rationale for committing crimes even greater than the ones they claim to fight like kidnapping a school boy, violating his rights, frightening his parents and terrorizing his community because crime, as they see it, is not about what you do, but who you are.
And as long as there are people in America who are walking their dogs while brown or Black,Trump will see a crime wave so massive it justifies commandeering local law enforcement and replacing police with armed soldiers to do what needs doing to keep the country safe
ICE conducted a raid in Connecticut recently. It detained about 65 people living in the country without authorization. The name of the raid was Operation Broken Trust. It was not only a comment on my states sanctuary laws. It was a warning, as if to say We can do to your people whatever we want and theres nothing you can do to stop us.
With exceptions, Connecticuts Trust Act puts strict limits on how state and local police cooperate with federal immigration authorities. The law, like all so called sanctuary laws, does not interfere with federal agents. It only forces them to do their work on their own. As the office of Connecticut Attorney General William Tong has said, the Trust Act reflects the unremarkable proposition that immigration enforcement is the responsibility of the federal government.
But by protecting brown people Connecticuts Trust Act actually breaks the publics trust, an ICE spokeswoman told the New Haven Register.
Such laws only force law enforcement professionals to release criminal alien offenders back into the very communities they have already victimized, she said.
The subtext here is that Connecticut, like all cities and states run by Democrats, is being hopelessly overrun by criminals alien offenders, that its leadership is weak, and that the only way to make things right is for the president to come in and enforce law and order. Two top state Republicans agreed that things are so bad they justified violating Connecticuts sovereignty.
Connecticuts streets are now safer, they actually said in a statement. Violent offenders are now in custody.
But are we safer thanks to ICE? - NO
That ICE took them anyway tells you public safety and public trust are not its main concerns, nor is serving justice, as justice has already been served. Indeed, that they were taken anyway suggests their prosecutions were not enough, that something more had to be done, for some reason beyond criminal justice. And that should be telling.
It tells us their real crime isnt what they did. Its WHO they are.
Dictators ARE Criminals
The regime wants us to quibble over the allegation that this boy overstayed his visa, but the visa question fades into the background when you bear in mind that the president does not care about preventing crimes but rather committing crimes, in order to grab more power for himself and others, who will commit more crimes.
After all, dictators are criminals first.
The president seems to understand the downside of being seen as a criminal. During an Oval Office meeting last week, in which he talked about sending troops to Chicago because is a killing field
