The wealth of the 10 richest people in the world a list dominated by US tech billionaires increased by a record amount after Donald Trumps victory in the presidential election
The Bloomberg Billionaires Index estimated that the US 10 wealthiest people gained nearly $64bn on Wednesday, the largest daily increase since the index began in 2012.
Elon Musk, the worlds richest person, registered the largest increase with a $26.5bn addition to his fortune, which now stands at $290bn. The prominent backer of Trump?s campaign, benefited from a surge in the share price of Tesla, the electric carmaker where he is chief executive and in which he owns a 13% stake.
The gains came as tech business leaders, including Amazons Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, chief executive of Facebook parent Meta, and Apples Tim Cook publicly congratulated Trump on his election win.
Much of the gains for the top 10 was because of a surge in US stocks on Wednesday as investors anticipated a low-tax and regulation-light policy platform.

Officials at the Pentagon are having informal discussions about what to do if Donald Trump were to give an illegal order, such as deploying the military domestically and to prevent Anti-Government demontrations , CNN reports.
They are also preparing for the possibility that he may change rules to be able to fire scores of career civil servants.
On the campaign trail, Trump has mulled sending the military after his political enemies, and also to turn back migrants at the southern border. US law generally prohibits active-duty troops from being deployed for law enforcement purposes. There are also fears he could gut the civil service in the Pentagon, and replace fired staff with employees selected for their loyalty to him.
Trump has suggested he would be open to using active-duty forces for domestic law enforcement and mass deportations and has indicated he wants to stack the federal government with loyalists and clean out corrupt actors in the US national security establishment.
Officials are now gaming out various scenarios as they prepare for an overhaul of the Pentagon.
We are all preparing and planning for the worst-case scenario, but the reality is that we dont know how this is going to play out yet, one defense official said.
Trumps election has also raised questions inside the Pentagon about what would happen if the president issued an unlawful order, particularly if his political appointees inside the department dont push back.
Troops are compelled by law to disobey unlawful orders, said another defense official. But the question is what happens then ? do we see resignations from senior military leaders? Or would they view that as abandoning their people?

The role of the next attorney general under the 47th president will significantly influence the administration?s legal direction and his relationship with the Department of Justice, an agency under President Joe Biden that has rigorously pursued criminal indictments against Trump, and one that Trump said had been "weaponized" against him during his reelection campaign.
Several possible candidates for attorney general have already emerged, each bringing unique qualifications and varying degrees of loyalty to Trump.
Here are just some of the names that have been floated, which could change as Trump prepares to return to the White House.
John Ratcliffe, loyal former director of national intelligence and ex-congressman, is a prominent name being floated for attorney general under Trump.

Trumps ambitious agenda could face pushback from an institution he has done much to shape: the Supreme Court, according to Lawrence Hurley, Senior Supreme Court Reporter for NBC
With a 6-3 conservative majority including three Trump appointees, the court has spent the last few years buffeted by criticism from the left Hurley wrote. But if the justices stick true to their stated jurisprudential principles, the new administration could end up on the losing side at least some of the time, legal experts say.
Hurley went on to quote John Malcolm, a lawyer at the Trump-allied Heritage Foundation.
?I think if President Trumps executive agencies tried to stretch the law beyond the breaking point in the same kind of way that the Biden administration has done then, yes, the courts will be a check on that power,? Malcolm said.
Hurley further pointed out that Trump lost several high-profile cases in his first term, including over his attempt to wind down the program that protects young immigrants known as 'Dreamers' from deportations and a plan to add a citizenship question to the census.
The Trump administration also suffered a big loss when in 2020 the court ruled 6-3 to extend workplace discrimination protections to LGBTQ employees, a decision that angered conservatives he added.
While Trump is certain to get some deference on certain issues, on others, such as environmental regulation, efforts to deregulate more than laws allow for could be difficult to defend, according to the report.
One issue where Trump would almost certainly enter choppy legal waters is his plan to end birthright citizenship, a right enshrined in the Constitution Hurley wrote.

Trumps plan to deport a significant portion of the 13 million undocumented immigrants currently living in the United States would cost roughly $968 billion over a 10-year period.
This includes the cost of hiring untold thousands of additional Department of Homeland Security personnel to round up, detain and process targets of Trumps mass deportations, in addition to the construction cost of detention camps, immigration judges and other related costs.
Journalist David Cay Johnston told MSNBC host Joy Ann-Reid on Friday, there is another layer of cost to Trumps deportations that has yet to be fully considered.
This isn't just due to the expected rise in food prices due to the agriculture industrys reliance on immigrant labor, but due to expected new taxes that will be a byproduct of Trumps mass deportations.
WHO WILL WORK IN THE FIELDS GATHERING THE CROPS?
Not only are you going to pay a lot more for food and meat, but a lot of the people who came here without permission or with limited permission that Trump wants to remove have American-born children, Johnston said.
So we're not only going to separate these families but your property taxes are going to go up because they're going to have to put millions of children into foster care, into orphanages, and we're going to have to bear the bill for that through our property taxes or sales taxes.
"In addition, when children grow up in circumstances like that, the likelihood we will have mental health and criminal problems in the future," he continued. "So the cost of this are way beyond the estimates that focus on just deporting people, and of course, Donald Trump said it will be bloody. And I don't see how it can be anything but that."
Trump has said his deportation operation would be modeled after former President Dwight Eisenhowers "Operation Wetback," which is the largest mass deportation program in U.S. history to date.
The operation was sloppy and costly and resulted in many U.S. citizens being rounded up in the mass deportation of approximately 1.3 million people. And earlier this year, Tom Homan, who was his former ICE chief, has promised that he would run the biggest deportation force this country has ever seen.
"They aint seen s... yet. Wait until 2025," Homan said at the National Conservatism Conference in July.
Trump has previously promised to invoke the Insurrection Act of 1807 to juice his deportation operation, as it would allow the U.S. military to be deployed on U.S. soil to round up and detain undocumented immigrants across the country.
If such a plan were carried out, it would cause enormous disruption to communities throughout the country and increase the weight of the federal government in peoples lives in a way that runs counter to a political party that supposedly prides itself on small government

Florida Republican Matt Gaetz has tendered his resignation from Congress effective immediately, House Speaker Mike Johnson revealed Wednesday.
The shock announcement comes on the same day Gaetz was surprisingly selected by President-elect Donald Trump to serve as attorney general in his incoming administration and reportedly before a Friday vote on whether to release a House Ethics Committee report related to allegations of sexual misconduct and drug use involving the now former congressman.
I think out of deference to us, he issued his resignation letter effective immediately. That caught us by surprise a little bit,Johnson (R-La.) said during a press conference.
Gaetzs resignation will end the House Ethics Committee investigation that was initiated in April 2021, over allegations that the congressman engaged in sexual misconduct and illicit drug use, accepted improper gifts, dispensed special privileges and favors to individuals with whom he had a personal relationship, and sought to obstruct government investigations of his conduct.
The ethics panel was reportedly set to vote Friday on whether to release its highly damaging report on Gaetz, according to Punchbowl News.
With Gaetz resigning, the panel no longer has jurisdiction to pursue the investigation.

News that a California woman told police she was trapped in a hotel room and sexually assaulted by a President-elect Donald Trump Cabinet pick has stunned a shellshocked nation.
The police report revealed by CNN Thursday morning details disturbing allegations brought against Fox News host and Trumps choice for Defense secretary Pete Hegseth, among them that the woman remembered repeatedly saying "No."
"The Hegseth police records are really bad and disturbing," said Bulwark managing editor Sam Stein. Even though President Joe Biden has pledged to peacefully handing the reins of power to President-elect Donald Trump on January 20th, he's still aiming to make sure his successor won't be able to easily undo his signature legislative accomplishments.
The Financial Times recently reported that both Biden and his Cabinet are working at breakneck pace to spend down tens of billions of dollars in projects that have already been approved by Congress before the Trump administration can claw it back or spend it elsewhere.
Domestically, this includes $39 billion in incentives for semiconductor manufacturing plants throughout the U.S. as part of the CHIPS and Science Act, which is fueling approximately 115,000 manufacturing jobs in multiple states.
Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo said her agency is instructing employees to work overtime and through the weekends to make sure the CHIPS and Science Act funds are out the door before Trumps inauguration less than two months from now. This apparently also included one-on-one calls to tech executives in an effort to fast-track several deals currently in the works.
The CHIPS team has announced preliminary agreements with two dozen companies for CHIPS awards, and over the next two months, plans to announce preliminary agreements for all $39 billion of that funding, and is well on its way towards securing final agreements for many of those entities where preliminary awards were announced, a White House official told the Financial Times.
One of Bidens most significant legislative achievements was the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), which Earthjustice referred to as "the largest climate spending bill ever.
One major component of that law was the appropriation of $369 billion in clean energy subsidies, which Trump campaigned on repealing. Biden climate advisor John Podesta told the Times that if Trump tries to undo the IRA, he may face unexpected resistance from Republican state governments.
Many Republicans, especially governors, know all this activity is a good thing for their districts, states and for their economies,"Podesta said.
Another big chunk of unspent money Biden is aiming to get out the door is $7 billion in military assistance to Ukraine that has yet to get to Kiev. Biden is aiming to fast-track that money before Trump gets into office, under the assumption that the president-elect will allow Russian President Vladimir Putin to conquer contested territory in Eastern Ukraine without putting up a fight.
The U.S. has already approved Ukraines use of long-range weapons to strike at Russian targets, and is sending anti-personnel mines to the Ukrainian military to use against Russia along with the larger anti-tank mines its already been deploying. Biden believes Kiev will be in a stronger negotiating position with Moscow if it has more weaponry at its disposal when Trump is inaugurated.
Finally, Biden is urging Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) to make the most of the Democratic majoritys final months to speed through his last remaining judicial nominees.
Schumer recently took advantage of several Republicans' absence in the chamber to hold votes on several nominees that had been held up, getting those judges confirmed to lifetime positions while Sens. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and JD Vance (R-Ohio) were with Trump at a launch of a SpaceX flight.

The government shutdown showdown of December 2024 was the first big test of president-elect Donald Trumps influence over Republicans in Congress.

One day after Trump derailed a bipartisan government funding bill - with a big assist from the world's richest man, Elon Musk - he issued a new demand, for a stripped-down government funding bill that would also raise the limit on how much new debt the federal government can issue to fund its spending.
It was a big ask for many congressional conservatives who have long demanded that any debt increase at least be accompanied by cuts to what they view as out-of-control government spending. And Democrats, and more than a few Republicans, rejected it.
Trumps demand was also a tacit admission that his legislative agenda, heavy on tax cuts and new military spending, was unlikely to deliver the kind of reduction to Americas enormous federal deficit that many on the right have been hoping for.
On Thursday night, this slimmed-down bill, along with a two-year suspension of the debt limit, came up for a vote in the House. Thirty-eight Republicans joined nearly every Democrat in voting it down. This amounted to a stunning rebuke of the president-elect, who had enthusiastically endorsed the legislation and threatened to unseat any Republicans who opposed it.
After Republicans and Democrats reopened communications, a new plan was hatched. Bring Thursday nights package back for another vote without the debt-limit provision. While 34 Republican budget hawks still rejected that, all Democrats who voted - wary of a government shutdown less than a week before Christmas ? jumped on board.
That ensured the bill had the necessary two-thirds majority to pass. The Senate passed it just after the midnight deadline by 85-11. On Saturday morning, US President Joe Biden signed it into law.
Republicans, in a closed-door meeting earlier on Friday, reportedly agreed to raise the debt limit without Democratic help sometime next year, before the US Treasury hits the current cap.

The day before his inauguration, Trump will be attending an interfaith prayer service (copying King Charles at Christmas), in Washington D.C. His wealthiest supporters can also attend if they write or solicit a big enough check.
Thats according to a recent report in Religion News Service, which published promotional material from Trumps inaugural committee showing a list of different tiers of benefits depending on how much a donor gives. On January 18, donors can get tickets to a Make America Great Again Victory Rally, a Cabinet reception and a dinner with Vice President-elect J.D. Vance.
And on January 19, donors who give $100,000 or raise $200,000 can get two tickets to the One America, One Light Sunday Service. RNS reporter Jack Jenkins described it as a pay-to-pray event.
Jenkins reported that the location of the service has yet to be announced and that it remains unclear who is hosting the One America, One Light prayer service.
