Children Fall Into Icy Lake Near Birmingham UK

Four children were taken to hospital in critical condition after being rescued from an icy lake near Birmingham.

BBC 12 DEC 2022.

They are believed to have fallen into the water after playing on ice in Babbs Mill Park, Kingshurst. They were taken to two hospitals in Birmingham.

West Midlands Ambulance Service said the children had been in cardiac arrest when they were rescued, but offered no further update on their condition.

The Met Office has warned of the risks of ice as the UK faces a cold spell.

During a news conference on Sunday evening, West Midlands fire chief Richard Stanton said crews were told on arrival that up to six people had been in the lake.

He said: "We have continued search operations in order to confirm whether there were any more in the water."

But he later clarified that "this would no longer be a search and rescue operation", citing the coldness of the water, the age of those who had entered, and the time they may have been in there.

The ambulance service said during the news conference that its resources had been stood down.

Supt Richard Harris, of West Midlands Police, added that his officers would "hold the scene tonight", but he could not confirm they were looking for anyone else at this stage.

He said one officer had suffered "mild hypothermia" during the rescue operation, but was making a recovery after being taken to hospital "as a precaution".

All three emergency services said they were called shortly after 14:30 GMT on Sunday, with the first ambulance arriving within seven minutes after it was called.

By the time firefighters arrived, both police office officers and members of the public were involved in rescue attempts, Mr Harris said.

Temperatures of 1C (34F) were reported in the area at the time. They are expected to plummet to -3C overnight.

The UK is expected to continue experiencing a cold spell - with snow, ice and freezing fog expected for days, according to forecasts.

Temperatures could drop as low as -15C in northeast Scotland overnight, which would be the lowest temperature recorded in the UK since February last year.

Solihull: Three Children Die in West Midlands Icy Lake Tragedy

Solihull Lake Deaths: Boy Got His Leg Stuck in Ice Jack & Others Tried to Help. HERO Jack 10, Died Trying to Save His Friends

Heartbreaking Tributes as Two of The Three Boys Killed in Frozen Lake Tragedy are Named
Two of the tragic schoolchildren killed when they fell into an icy lake at Babbs Mill Park, Solihull, have been named, prompting
heartbreaking tributes from the local community

Daily Mail 13 DEC 2022

Jack 10, Died Trying to Save His Friends

Tributes have been paid to three schoolboys who were killed when they plunged into an icy lake.

The youngsters - two cousins aged eight and ten and an 11-year-old friend - died after falling into the water on Sunday.

A fourth boy, aged six, remains critically ill after being hauled from the freezing lake by hero emergency crews.

One of them has been named as Jack Johnson, ten. Another was named locally in floral tributes as 11-year-old Thomas.

All four had been taken to hospital in critical conditions after falling through the ice at Babbs Mill Park on Sunday afternoon.

A police officer tried to punch through the ice as he and others attempted to rescue the children in Babbs Mill Park, Kingshurst, on Sunday.

A fourth boy, aged six, remains in a critical condition in hospital after being pulled from the water.

Family members affected by the tragedy are "absolutely devastated", said Supt Richard Harris of West Midlands Police.

Supt Harris said all police who went to the scene had entered the water with no regard for their own safety or with any special clothing - some going in waist-deep.

"One of my officers was trying to punch through the ice to actually rescue the children themselves," he said.

"That officer, as a result of that, had some mild hypothermia yesterday. I'm pleased to say he's now been released from hospital and he's absolutely fine."

Searches are continuing at the lake and Supt Harris said teams wanted to be "100% certain that there is no-one else possibly in the water at this time".

"It's important to stress though that we've had no contact from anybody suggesting that there is anybody else missing."

A search is continuing to make "100% certain" no others are in the water, police said

Supt Harris added officers were still trying to work through all the details of the incident and could not say how long the boys had been in the water before emergency services arrived.

However, he said officers had arrived within minutes of the first call, which came in at about 14:30 GMT.

Police were being guided by the families as to how much information was made available to the media, he said, and they were doing "everything we possibly can to support them".

Firefighters lay flowers for boys who died after falling in icy lake

Members of the public and police officers initially went into the freezing water to try to get the boys out, before the children were reached by specialist fire crews.

Firefighters from Sheldon fire station - about five miles away from the park - were among those who had tried to rescue the boys.

On Monday, they laid flowers alongside a growing number of tributes at the scene and were applauded by onlookers.

Temperatures are thought to have plunged to 1C (34F) in the area at the time of the incident, falling to -3C (26F) overnight.

After their rescue, the children were rushed to Birmingham Children's Hospital and Heartlands Hospital, but police said they could not be revived.

A mass of flowers, balloons, toys and messages is growing just outside the police cordon, a few hundred metres from where the boys fell through the ice on the partially frozen lake.

Families continue to come to pay their respects, many of them in tears, hugging their small children and lighting candles.

It's often a cliché to talk about close-knit communities, but Kingshurst feels like a place where that description holds true.

It's a story that's struck a nerve here after a tough 24 hours during we which learned three young lads lost their lives and another, the youngest of all, is still in a critical condition.

St Anthony's Primary School, in Kingshurst, closed to pupils on Monday but said it would reopen on Tuesday "to support our children and families the best we can".

"Never has our motto being (sic) more meaningful," it tweeted, "actions speak louder than words".

Another school, Park Hall Academy, in Castle Bromwich, also said it was aware of the tragic event at Babbs Mill lake and that thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved.

"Please rest assured that anyone affected will be supported," it said.

Unhappy Re: Last Boy 6, Who Fell Into Icy Lake Has Died

Solihull: Six-Year-Old Boy Who Fell Into Icy Lake Has Died

A six-year-old who was one of four boys to fall into an icy lake near Solihull has died, police have said.

BBC News 15 DEC 2022.

Hundreds of floral tributes have been left for the boys near the scene

The three others, aged eight, 10 and 11, who have also died were with the younger child at Babbs Mill Park, in Kingshurst, on Sunday.

West Midlands Police said it was with "heartfelt sadness" it had to report the six-year-old in hospital had "lost his fight for life".

Hundreds of floral tributes and toys have been left at a site near the lake.

West Midlands Fire Service, which was also involved in the effort to rescue the boys, said it was "devastated" to hear the news.

It added: "We wish the family strength and comfort in these tragic circumstances."

The 10-year-old has been named locally as Jack Johnson, but the identities of the other three boys are yet to be confirmed.

Specialist diving teams were in the water until Tuesday, although police have stressed they have not had reports of anyone else missing.

They added all searches had now been completed and the cordon would be lifted.

On Wednesday, police said their deepest sympathies were with the families and friends of the children.

"We cannot comprehend the enormity of the pain they must feel and our hearts go out to them," a statement said.

A family member of Jack said all the families involved in the tragedy were suffering "unimaginable pain".

His aunt Charlotte McIlmurray thanked the local community on social media for their support.

Members of the public and police officers initially went into the water to try to get the children, before they were pulled out by specialist water rescue-trained firefighters. One policeman punched through ice to try to reach the boys.

Mourners have continued to visit Kingshurst, with hundreds of cards and gifts left by the community and people paying their respects at a site near Babbs Mill Lake.

On Wednesday, England footballer Tyrone Mings and his Aston Villa teammate John McGinn went to the scene to lay flowers.

The footballers visited the growing memorial by Babbs Mill Lake

Mings said it was a "personal decision" to pay their respects and said: "I think it's impacted the whole city [of Birmingham].

"Sometimes, as we've seen with other things that have happened across the city, there are things more important than football," he said.

"We felt it was important to come down here, show our respects and show we were thinking about everything that has happened and the parents that are affected by it.

"We feel that pain too."

The players had been at the club's mid-season training camp in Dubai before returning to the UK ahead of Thursday night's home friendly against Spanish side Villareal.

Club captain McGinn said: "We were in Dubai when we heard the news and I thought of my nieces and nephews, and the players thought about their kids.

"It was certainly moving for us."

Birmingham City's head coach John Eustace laid a wreath at the memorial on behalf of the team on Tuesday.

Searches took place on Tuesday but have now been completed

The community in Kingshurst was praised at Prime Minister's Questions earlier, as well as emergency services staff who responded.

Saqib Bhatti, Conservative MP for Meriden, told the Commons the people who he represents had suffered "an unimaginable tragedy" and the families were in his thoughts and prayers.

He asked the prime minister to join him in paying tribute to the community that had "come together and is supporting each other to get through this tragedy".

"And will you recognise the heroic efforts of the emergency services, including the police officer who used his bare hands to try and break through the ice and then jumped in the water with fire service personnel, without the PPE, risking their own lives to save the young children?" he said.

Rishi Sunak sent his condolences to the families and friends of the boys and paid tribute to the emergency services for "their incredibly selfless actions".
