Prince Charles Accepted Suitcase Stuffed With €1million in Cash From Qatari Sheikh

The Prince of Wales Prince Charles is alleged to have personally received the cash from Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani, who was the prime minister of Qatar between 2011 and 2015

Daily Mirror 26 JUN 2022

The Prince of Wales with the Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad Bin Jassim al Thani

Prince Charles allegedly accepted more than €3million in cash donations from an ex-PM of Qatar – including €1million in a suitcase.

Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani is said to have handed banknotes over in meetings between 2011 and 2015.

The astonishing revelations came as the Prince of Wales sought to make amends for the UK’s human rights record by announcing a national day of remembrance for victims of the British slave trade.

Ironically, Qatar has long been questioned over its own human rights record.

The €1million in a suitcase was said to have been handed over during a meeting at Clarence House. On another occasion, cash was stuffed into carrier bags from upmarket London store Fortnum and Mason, the Sunday Times reported.

The newspaper said the money was given in €500 notes – a now discontinued denomination dubbed the “Bin Laden” for its links to terrorist financing.

Clarence House insisted the money was “passed immediately to one of the prince’s charities who carried out the appropriate covenants and assured us all correct procedures were followed”.

The charity in question is the Prince of Wales’ Charitable Fund. It is understood that at least one trustee had no knowledge of the funds.

In addition, none of Charles’ meetings with Al Thani appears on the Court Circular record of royal engagements.

Prince Charles allegedly accepted cash from Sheikh Hamad when he was prime minister

Charles is already embroiled in a cash for honours scandal amid claims former aide Michael Fawcett helped fix a CBE for Saudi billionaire Mahfouz Marei Mubarak bin Mahfouz.

The Qatari connection will raise eyebrows. It is illegal to be gay in the Arab state and women are heavily discriminated against. The country hosts the World Cup this year amid claims from Amnesty International that 6,500 migrant workers died in construction schemes. Qatar contests the figures.

News of the cash transactions took the shine off Charles’ groundbreaking call for a national day of remembrance to the millions forced into slavery.

A source close to the prince said it could be similar to Holocaust Memorial Day and Charles is stepping up efforts with community leaders to make it happen.

The source said: “The Holocaust was appalling and dreadful and just as we have acknowledged the horrors of the past, the prince believes there should be an equal acknowledgement of our past in the slave trade.

“Britain is made up of a very diverse population and the same can be said of the Commonwealth. The Prince of Wales is looking for more opportunities to celebrate those different aspects of the collective.

“We have gained a greater understanding of the Holocaust, so it is acknowledged and learnt at a national level, but that is not true of the slave trade. The prince has acknowledged that it needs to happen and if there is a movement to back that, the Prince of Wales will certainly lend his support.”

In a speech to Commonwealth leaders in Rwanda on Friday, Charles, 73, described his regret that Britain shipped African slaves to the US. He said:

“I cannot describe the depths of my personal sorrow at the suffering of so many.

“I want to acknowledge that the roots of our contemporary association run deep into the most painful period of our history. Many of those wrongs belong to an earlier age with different – in some ways lesser – values.

“By working together, we are building a new and enduring friendship.” The memorial day move comes after PR disasters involving the royals in the Caribbean.

In March, pictures from Jamaica showed the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge touching the fingers of local kids through a wire fence.

Their use of a Land Rover ridden by the Queen on a visit in the 1960s was likened to colonialism.

Last year, Charles’ visit to Barbados ahead of a republican handover was overshadowed by locals who called his appearance “an insult” and demanded reparations. David Denny, who led the Barbados protests, last night repeated a call for reparations and reacted to Charles’ memorial day plan.

He said: “I am happy that he’s made the suggestion, but a call like that should come from the African people themselves. He doesn’t have the right to determine a day for African people.”

Meanwhile, Charles, yesterday announced he was commissioning portraits of Windrush pioneers and will host and attend events to mark 75 years since the 1948 arrival of immigrants from the Caribbean.

Charles said: “The Windrush vessel arrived at Tilbury in the year I was born, inspiring a generation who made this country home. This generation has made an immeasurable contribution to the society we share. That is why I wanted to pay my own heartfelt tribute to the role they have played.”

Watchdog investigates Firm Behind Prince Charles’s Eco-Village in Scotland

Havisham Properties, owned by Tory peer Lord Brownlow, under scrutiny after buying 11 homes on failed Knockroon development

The Guardian UK 3 JUL 2022

A charity watchdog has confirmed it is investigating transactions by a property company which apparently bought homes on an Ayrshire estate from a subsidiary of the Prince’s Foundation.

The company, Havisham Properties, is being scrutinised over the purchase of 11 properties on the Knockroon development in Scotland – originally acquired as a piece of farmland by Prince Charles when he bought the nearby mansion, Dumfries House.

The homes, understood to have been bought between 2012 and 2017 for £1.7m, were originally planned as an eco-village intended to attract jobs and revitalise the former mining community.

A spokesman for the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator said: “We can confirm that the work of Havisham Group and property transactions relating to the Knockroon development in Ayrshire forms part of our overall investigation, work on which is ongoing.”

It follows allegations published in the Sunday Times that Prince Charles ennobled the businessman and owner of Havisham Properties, Lord Brownlow, after accepting millions of pounds in donations from him.

The Tory peer, who in 2013 was appointed as a trustee of the Prince’s Foundation, which manages Dumfries House, helped bail Prince Charles out of the failed eco-village project after just 31 out of 770 homes were built due to a lack of demand. It was reported the prince hoped the project would help pay off the £20m loan he took out to buy Dumfries House.

In 2018, after Brownlow, 58, allegedly completed his purchase of the unwanted properties and quit as a trustee, the prince awarded him a royal honour at Buckingham Palace.

The Tory peer, who came to prominence after funding the controversial refurbishment of Boris Johnson’s Downing Street flat, was made a Commander of the Victorian Order (CVO).

“Lord Brownlow was appointed CVO in 2018 in recognition of his role of chair of the charity the Prince’s Foundation for Building Community,” a Prince’s Foundation spokeswoman told the newspaper.

It follows reports the Prince of Wales will no longer accept large cash donations for his charities after facing criticism over claims he personally received €3m in cash from a billionaire Qatari sheikh. The money was reportedly handed over in a small suitcase, a holdall and Fortnum & Mason carrier bag.

The cash was passed to the Prince of Wales’s Charitable Fund from Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber al-Thani, who was the prime minister of Qatar between 2007 and 2013.

Prince Charles Accepted £1m From Family of Osama bin Laden, Report Claims

Future king allegedly accepted donation for his charity in 2013 but Clarence House disputes the claims

BBC News 30 JUL 2022.

The Prince of Wales received a £1m donation for his charity from relatives of Osama bin Laden, according to a report.

The Sunday Times alleged that the future king accepted the payment from Bakr bin Laden, the patriarch of the Saudi family, and his brother Shafiq.

Prince Charles, 73, is said to have held a private meeting with Bakr, 76, at Clarence House in London on 30 October 2013, two years after Osama bin Laden was shot dead by US special forces at a compound near Islamabad in Pakistan, according to the newspaper.

Clarence House strongly disputes many of the claims, saying the decision to accept the donation to his charity, the Prince of Wales’s Charitable Fund (PWCF), was taken solely by trustees.

Bakr and Shafiq bin Laden are half-brothers of Osama, related to the founder of al-Qaida through their father Mohammed bin Awad bin Laden, a Yemeni-born billionaire.

There is no suggestion that Bakr or Shafiq bin Laden has sponsored or been involved in acts of terrorism.

Sir Ian Cheshire, chairman of the Prince of Wales Charitable Foundation (PWCF), where the money was deposited, said in a statement: “The donation from Sheik Bakr Bin Laden in 2013 was carefully considered by PWCF Trustees at the time.

“Due diligence was conducted, with information sought from a wide range of sources, including government. The decision to accept the donation was taken wholly by the Trustees.

“Any attempt to suggest otherwise is misleading and inaccurate.”

A source close to the charity said after a thorough examination of the issues, the trustees concluded that the actions of one Bin Laden family member should not tarnish the whole family.

A Clarence House spokesperson said: “The Prince of Wales’ Charitable Fund has assured us that thorough due diligence was undertaken in accepting this donation. “The decision to accept was taken by the charity’s Trustees alone and any attempt to characterise it otherwise is false.”

A source disputed suggestions that the prince had personally brokered the deal, had agreed to the donations despite advisers’ objections and that several advisers pleaded with him in person to return the money.

The source also denied that the Prince was urged to return the money and was told the sum “would not be good for anybody”.

It comes a month after it emerged that the Prince of Wales accepted bags containing millions of euros in cash during meetings with the former prime minister of Qatar.

Last week, the Charity Commission said it would take no further action over the reports that Charles was given a total of €3m (£2.6m) during meetings with Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber al-Thani.

The Sunday Times reported that the cash was handed to the Prince of Wales in a suitcase on one occasion, a holdall on another, as well as in Fortnum & Mason carrier bags, the upmarket department store which holds a royal warrant to supply the prince’s household with groceries.

The handovers were alleged to have occurred during meetings between the two men, including a private one-to-one meeting at Clarence House in 2015.

Each payment was deposited into the accounts of the PWCF and there is no suggestion the payments were illegal.

A Clarence House spokesperson said in June the money given during the 2015 meeting was “passed immediately to one of the prince’s charities who carried out the appropriate covenants and assured us that all the correct processes were followed”.
