Alabama MANHUNT For Missing Prison Inmate and Guard

US police are searching for an escaped inmate who is facing murder charges, and a guard who disappeared with him.

Inmate Casey White and corrections officer Vicki White were last seen on Friday morning at the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Office in Alabama.

Ms White said she was taking him to a mental evaluation, but officials later realised it had not been scheduled.

Authorities are investigating whether Ms White helped the inmate escape, or if she was taken hostage by him.

Despite their matching surnames, the pair are not related. Authorities say Casey White should be considered "armed and extremely dangerous" - in part because he may now have access to the officer's gun.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Lauderdale County Sheriff Rick Singleton said Ms White left the detention centre with the prisoner at about 09:30 CDT (15:30 BST) after telling colleagues she was going to drop him off at the courthouse for a mental health evaluation.

She said she would then get some medical attention because she was not feeling well, Sheriff Singleton added.

Shortly after 11:00 someone found her vehicle in a shopping centre car park.

At about 15:30 officials realised the prisoner had not been returned to custody, and no one could contact the officer.

The US Marshals Service is offering a reward of up to $10,000 (£7,950) for information leading to Casey White's recapture and the location of Vicki White.

"Casey White is believed to be a serious threat to the corrections officer and the public," US Marshal Marty Keely said in a statement.

'Exemplary Employee'

Sheriff Singleton said Ms White has been with the department for about 25 years. She is the assistant director of corrections, and part of her role involves arranging courthouse transportation.

Her decision to take the prisoner to the courthouse by herself violated policy, he explained, as someone charged with such a severe crime would normally be accompanied by two deputies.

"I can tell you that every employee in this office is shocked that she is missing and that this has happened."

Sheriff Singleton said Ms White had been voted employee of the year several times and was an "exemplary employee".

He said he wanted solid proof before accusing Ms White of any wrong doing.

"Did she assist him in escaping? That's obviously a possibility. So we're looking into that as one angle of the investigation. Was she kidnapped en route to the courthouse? You know, taken against her will? That's obviously another angle we're looking at."

"Knowing the inmate, I think she is in danger whatever the circumstances," the sheriff said.

Murder Charge

White, 38, was charged with two counts of capital murder in September 2020 over the stabbing of 58-year-old Connie Ridgeway, according to the US Marshals Service.

The US federal law enforcement agency said he was already serving time for a series of crimes in 2015, including burglary, vehicle theft, and a police chase.

He confessed to the murder and was awaiting trial at the Lauderdale County Jail when he disappeared, authorities added.

White has planned to escape from prison before, Sheriff Singleton told ABC News. But officials found out about the plan - which involved taking a hostage - before he could attempt it in 2020.

Vicky White and Casey Cole White - no relation - were caught in Indiana following a car chase that ended in a crash on Monday.

The assistant jail director shot herself after being found by the police in Evansville.

Vanderburgh County Sheriff Dave Wedding reportedly said Vicky White was taken to hospital but died of her injuries on Monday evening.

"The Vanderburgh County Coroner's Office, the Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office and the US Marshals Service are investigating the death of Vicky White, fugitive from Alabama," Vanderburgh Coroner Steve Lockyear reportedly said.

She died just after 7 pm at Deaconess Hospital and an autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday, reported Fox News.

Since their escape from Lauderdale County jail in Alabama, on April 29, the pair had been on the run.

The pair had become secret lovers before she created a bogus appointment for the murder suspect in order to be able to drive him from the jail.

The lovers led the FBI on a weeks-long manhunt that saw them travel across three states.

Vicky, 56, was captured on surveillance video holding the door open for a shackled White, 38, with a second angle showing them getting into a marked patrol car and driving away.

The sheriff's squad car seen in the surveillance video was found in a car park of a local shopping centre.

It later emerged she had secretly bought a second-hand car for them to escape in, but that was later found abandoned in Tennessee.

Vicky White was transported to a hospital for treatment. Sheriff Rick Singleton said he wasn’t sure if the wounds are from the wreck or not.

Sheriff Singleton said confessed killer White “will be brought back” to his prison in Florence, Alabama.

He said: “He’s not getting out of this jail again.”

Vicky White, due to retire after 25 years the day after her disappearance, had first met Casey in 2020.

He had been brought to Lauderdale County for questioning after he wrote a letter confessing to the 2015 murder of Connie Ridgeway.

Casey White was easily recognisable due to being 6ft 9in tall

The 59-year-old was found stabbed to death in her home at the Meadowland Apartments in Rogersville, Alabama.

White said he was a paid hitman, but when charged with murder pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.

He was already serving a 75-year sentence for a one-night crime spree in December 2015.

His night of terror included a burglary, two carjackings and multiple shootings in North Alabama and South Tennessee.

The spree left a woman injured and dog dead.
