A manipulative and controlling dad has been jailed for life for smothering his own children to death for attention, before faking his girlfriend's suicide six years later.

Triple killer Jordan Monaghan was convicted of murdering his newborn baby girl and toddler son by smothering, and six years later killing his new partner with a drug overdose.

He was today given three mandatory life sentences and ordered to serve a minimum of 40 years before parole.

Monaghan, a manipulative and controlling gambling addict, was not present as the guilty verdicts were delivered by the jury foreman on Friday morning, following six days of deliberations after a 10-week trial at Preston Crown Court.

After further information came to light, police reviewed the deaths of Ruby, aged 24 days at the family home in Blackburn, and Logan, aged 21 months, at Waves waterpark in Blackburn, and Monaghan was arrested in 2018.

He was on police bail for the child murders when he murdered his new girlfriend with a fatal ****tail of prescription drugs in October 2019.

Monaghan killed when his partners attempted to leave him, the court heard.

The defendant, who has been suffering a minor illness, was not in court as the guilty verdicts were delivered by the foreman of the jury following 26 hours of deliberation across six days.

His ex-fiance, Laura Gray, the 28-year-old mother of the children, wept in the public gallery as the verdicts were given.

Monaghan was convicted of the three murders and two counts of attempted murder to a third child who cannot be identified for legal reasons.

Sentencing Monaghan, Mr Justice Goose, said: "It is difficult to imagine why you carried out these offences but having listened to the evidence in this trial I am sure you are an extremely controlling, selfish and cruel man.

"A striking feature in these offences is that you carried them out covertly and secretively in the home you lived in with the mother of those children and with Evie Adams."

The judge added: "The trigger to these offences were your volatile relationships.

"The consequences were the snuffing out of the lives of two very young children and a young woman."

Speaking of Ruby, the judge added: "Her life had barely started and you extinguished it."

During the 10-week trial the court heard that Monaghan killed because he couldn't bear rejection from his partners.

In the weeks before Miss Adams' death, messages heard in court revealed that Monaghan had warned her he wouldn't "put up" with her dumping him.

She was found dead in the home they shared with other members of her family, with an intoxicating mix of diazepam and tramadol in her system.

Further messages showed Monaghan had purchased the prescription drugs illegally from the black market, but had initially lied to officers about this and denied any involvement with his girlfriend's death.

While placing a photograph in her coffin at the funeral, Monaghan claimed he discovered a suicide note from Miss Adams which fell out of the picture frame.

Prosecutors told the court that this type written note had in reality been created by Monaghan to cover his tracks of yet another murder.

Speaking in court as he watched as his daughter's killer was jailed, Evie Adams father said her death had taken away a massive part of their lives.

He said: "Our lives changed completely on the night of October 24, 2019, when a police officer came to our home and abruptly gave us the news that Evie had died.

"We were told she had taken her own life by overdose. That was the start of the ordeal.

"Once the police inquiry team contacted us we were witnesses and we became witnesses. We couldn't be given full details of how the case progressed."

Among the heart breaking witness impact statements was also that of Laura Gray, who lost her first and second born children to the hands of the killer.

She said: "All I ever wanted was to be a mum. I wanted to give children the love and opportunities I never had growing up. Jordan knew how much I wanted that.

"My children are the most important thing in my life. I loved every single day I had with them.

"I have the memories and they are truly lovely memories but memories will never beat the reality.

"I will never be the same person again. When the children went a huge part of me went with them."

Newborn Ruby, was the first victim of the covert killer, who smothered her in the early hours of New Years Day.

The baby girl had taken her food and was "absolutely fine" before her mum left her in the sole care of her father, who volunteered to do the 2am feed for the first time.

But shortly after going to bed, Miss Gray was awoken to the sound of Monaghan shouting that their baby daughter wasn't breathing.

She was taken to hospital but the baby could not be resuscitated.

Eight months later in a similarly sinister scenario, the couple's first child, Logan, 21 months, was taken swimming alone by his father.

But after just half an hour at Waves in Blackburn, the dad returned home and claimed the tot was asleep in his buggy.

However when Miss Gray went to wake her son, she found him unresponsive.

Both the children's sudden deaths were investigated at the time with the couple even hitting national headlines as they vowed to undergo genetic testing to see if there was a biological explanation for their heartbreak.

But over the course of the 10-week trial, the jury heard how controlling and manipulative Monaghan intentionally harmed his children in a bid to force his partner to stay.

Monaghan thought he had successfully kept his crimes under wraps until new police relaunched an investigation into the child deaths and he was arrested in 2018.
