Aston Hall Survivor Relives Horrifying Ordeal - Sadistic Experiments and Truth Serum'

Carol Minto, 66, was just 15 when she was sent to the notorious Aston Hall Psychiatric Hospital in Derby UK, where she was subject to horrific abuse. Now, she's telling her story in her own words

A survivor of the wicked Aston Hall psychiatric hospital who was sexually assaulted by her brother and her psychiatrist has revealed she needs to sleep near a window to have an "escape route."

Carol Minto, now 66, was sexually abused by her own broter Ian when she was 11 years old. Ian, then 13, used kitchen utensils to defile her.

In a new book, The Asylum, Carol writes: "It was the same routine every time; he would grab me on the landing and drag me into his bedroom. He used big spoons and spatulas to assault me, like he was doing some sort of experiment on me. It was sickening.

"Ian was much stronger and bigger than me and I couldn't get away from him."

The horrific abuse continued for years and Carol started running away from home to get away from her cruel attacker.

When she was 15, social services stepped in and took her into care - but Carol was severely let down by authorities when she was supposed to be safe.

She writes: "I told my mum and the social worker about the abuse, and they said I was a liar. They said that sort of thing would not happen in a family. I felt absolutely powerless."

After trying to speak out about the abuse, Carol was placed in Aston Hall psychiatric hospital - now infamous for the cruel and sadistic experiments it carried out on children in its care.

While she was in the hospital, Carol was sedated, stripped naked, sexually assaulted and raped by Kenneth Milner, the doctor in charge.

In almost three years at the hospital, Carol was subject to 31 'treatments' which involved injecting her with a 'truth serum' and asking her in detail about what her brother had done to her.

Looking back on her time in the hospital, Carol says Aston Hall was a "terrifying, wicked place" but looked back fondly on the friendships she made with other patients.

"I bonded with the other girls and we formed close friendships. We were all stuck in that place together.

"We had midnight feasts and we were always plotting to run off. The other girls made life bearable; they were my life-line.

"But each night, going to bed with bars on the windows, and knowing there was no escape, was terrifying. And that fear is with me, even now," she said.

Fifty years on from the harrowing abuse she suffered, Carol admits she still has to sleep on a high bed near a window, so she can have an "escape route" if she's in danger.

She wrote: "I know it may sound strange, so many years later, but in a low bed I feel vulnerable.

"I still feel as though my brother or Milner could attack me. I spent many years sleeping in a hospital with bars on the windows, where there was no escape.

"So now, I need to be in a high bed, with a view of an open window. It gives me peace of mind."

When she was 18, Carol was discharged from Aston Hall and fell pregnant, but her baby daughter was taken in for adoption.

Six years later, she met the love of her life, Sunny Minto. The pair married and had a son, Karl. Sadly, Sunny later died from cancer.

But in 2010, brave Carol plucked up the courage to report the abuse she suffered by Milner and her brother to the police.

She wrote: "I was the first one to make an official complaint about Kenneth Milner. As a result, over a hundred other girls came forward to tell their stories of physical and sexual abuse."

After coming forward to accuse her brother, Ian Mackie, he admitted sexual assault and was jailed in October 2011 for two and a half years. He died shortly after his release.

Milner died before police could question him, but his victims were told there was a strong possibility he'd have faced criminal charges.

A 2018 report into the Aston Hall atrocities strongly condemned him. Carol received £22,000 compensation for the abuse she suffered.

Now, she's telling her story in her own words in The Asylum, which is out this week . But despite enduring awful abuse throughout her childhood, she wants to spread a positive message.

"The bad memories will never leave me, not fully. But despite everything, my story is one of resilience and survival and hope."
