Brit 26, To Marry Double Killer Penpal 'Animal' in US Jail Having Never Met Him Before
EXCLUSIVE: Naomi Wise, from Chelmsford, Essex, fell hard for Victor Oquendo, who is serving 24 years for two gangland hits and three armed robberies, after the pair became penpals Daily Mirror UK, 5 APR 2021. ![]() Naomi Wise, from Chelmsford, Essex, fell hard for Victor Oquendo, who is serving 24 years for two gangland hits and three armed robberies, after the pair became penpals A British woman is flying to the US to marry a double killer she has never met – and who is locked up until 2034. Naomi Wise fell for Victor Oquendo – nicknamed Animal – after becoming a jail mentor. Online chats led to a romance that has stunned Naomi’s family, not least when she revealed she had accepted his marriage proposal. Oquendo, 30, shot dead two rivals in a gangland hit and has served 10 years of a 24-year sentence for crimes which also included three armed robberies. But Naomi, 26, insists: “Victor’s not a monster, he’s a human being. Never in my wildest dreams did I plan to fall in love with an inmate, but it happened and I wouldn’t change it. Victor is the kindest man I have ever met. People might judge before knowing the full story, but I can’t imagine my life without him.” Naomi, of Chelmsford, Essex, hopes to fly to the US by the *summer and visit Oquendo when Covid rules allow. The wedding could happen in jail in September. ![]() ![]() The killer is heavily tattooed and Naomi has had inkings too. She had his initials tattooed on her wrist last month and also has one on her ribs of his handwriting and signature. The unlikely romance was spawned when trainee counsellor Naomi *researched mentoring. She says: “I found a website through which I could write to a prisoner and figured it would be perfect – they’ve lived fascinating lives.” She mentored one man before contacting Oquendo at Macomb Correctional Facility in Michigan, after spotting his mugshot on writeaprisoner.com. It was only after they had been in contact for a fortnight that he admitted he had shot dead two men in 2010 when he was 19. Naomi says: “I was shocked. It was a lot to take in. I wanted to know how he felt about what he’d done. If he didn’t care that would have been a red flag, but he’s extremely remorseful. “He struggles to live with himself and has night terrors. It said a lot to me about the person he really is.” Oquendo shot dead two men after a car jacking on May 29, 2010. He approached a white Chevrolet Malibu and armed with a gun, forced the driver to hand over the keys. He drove away with an accomplice and, the same night, shot dead Fernando Juarez and Gerardo Juarez, before burning the car Oquendo admitted two counts of second-degree murder, home invasion and robbery. But despite his crimes, Naomi says: “Victor is the man I want to be with. From the beginning, I knew it was different. “I couldn’t stop thinking about Victor. I checked my phone constantly and got butterflies when he replied. After a few weeks, I knew I couldn’t deny it any longer. I told Victor that I was sorry but I’d started to get feelings and needed to pull away. “He begged me to let him ring me and, on the phone, he admitted he had feelings for me too. “It was the first time we’d spoken on the phone and I was surprised by how nice his voice was. It was very deep and calming. “We swapped pictures and Victor sent me love letters and art in the post. The first was a letter saying he believes we’re a partnership. I replied in agreement. He also sent portraits he’d drawn of me. He’s a brilliant artist and does tattoos in prison.” Initially, Naomi, who has had two relationships lasting over four years, kept Victor a secret. She adds: “Going out on dates or cuddling on the sofa aren’t possible, but Victor and I are much closer than I ever was with previous partners. “I knew my family would worry, though, and didn’t want to deal with any judgment while I was figuring out what our relationship was. But I soon realised things were getting serious.” Oquendo proposed three times on the phone over the next few months, but each time she refused – declaring: “I told him he was mad. We hadn’t even met and had no idea when we could meet due to Covid travel restrictions.” Then, last September, Naomi received a large bunch of lilies and roses and a black velvet ring box. She reveals: “I opened the note and it was from Victor, asking me to marry him. He must have got a family member to help send it and along with the note was a beautiful diamond ring.
