Birmingham UK Stabbings: Police Declare Major Incident After One Killed in City Centre

A manhunt is underway for a lone attacker who stabbed eight people at "random" in Birmingham city centre, killing one and injuring seven, say police

Daily Mirror UK, 6 SEP 2020

A man is dead and seven people are injured after a series of random stabbings in Birmingham city centre, with police declaring a major incident and launching a murder investigation.

Police have launched a manhunt for one suspect who stabbed the eight victims while roaming the area, which is filled with bars and pubs, over a two-hour period.

Witnesses said two people had been "stabbed in the neck", and at least one person was knifed in Gay Village.

Small forensic tents were set up on at least three streets, as at least four scenes were taped off in the Arcadian and Snow Hill areas, about a mile apart.

Police found a black-handled kitchen knife with a serrated blade while searching a drain following the mass stabbing incident.

Officers and paramedics were called to the first scene at around 12.30am on Sunday, and "a number of other stabbings" occurred in the area shortly after.

West Midlands Police said the stabbings were linked and are thought to be random, but there is no suggestion they were a hate crime, an act of terrorism or linked to gang activity.

Residents have been urged to remain "alert" and "vigilant" as police search for a suspect.

A man said he witnessed an attack in Irving Street, where several blue tents were erected close to the gates of a primary school on Sunday morning.

He said: "Two people were stabbed in the neck, they were put in an ambulance and taken away."

Cara Curran, a club promoter in the Arcadian Centre, said she was having drinks with colleagues after finishing her shift when a number of fist fights started breaking out, including a "group on group" brawl that didn't appear to be sparked by something "petty".

She told Radio 5 Live's Sunday Breakfast that racial slurs were being shouted and there were chaotic scenes as club bouncers tried to break up the fight. However, there was no indication any of the fights were linked to the stabbings.

The young woman said she was left "shocked" by the violence, adding: "It seemed quite targeted, due to the fact the language they were using.

"Their body language from leaving the club was like they were prepared for something.

"They were not just having an argument and then fighting, it was straight into fists being thrown. There was not much talking going on.

"Drinks were falling, rings were falling off, so jewellery was going everywhere, clothes were being torn.

"One of the males ended up with his hair being pulled out and being left with a bald patch.

"They would just keep going at it, there were at least 10 security trying to pull these boys apart."

Ms Curran described it as a "multicultural night" in the clubs, adding: "It was many groups of friends, which were all different cultures, just going at each other, so it wasn’t like it was race on race, it was like group on group."

She said she heard loud bangs and saw a young man on the floor with "quite a lot of havoc going on".

She said people at the scene claimed the bangs she heard were gunshots, but police said they have received no reports of shots being fired or anyone being shot.

Witnesses described distressing scenes as people were knifed, with one person tweeting: "I’ve literally just witnessed a stabbing... in Birmingham Gay Village, while on a facetime call. I am shook and I just wanna cry."

Another person wrote: "Pretty scary tonight - stabbings around Hurst Street and the gay village. So much police - hope people are safe..."

A local resident tweeted: "Imagine leaving your apartment building in the Arcadian to find blood all over the floor there and to be told there’s been multiple stabbings on Hurst Street. What world do we live in."

A number of blue tents were set up at a scene in Irving Street, including a smaller one in the road.

A similar small blue tent was erected on a pavement in Livery Street behind a wide police cordon, right next to Snow Hill station, about half a mile from the Irving Street scene.

About 100 yards away, a small tent covered a section of pavement, alongside the wall of a bar, in Barwick Street, near the junction of Church Street.

The majority of Hurst Street was taped off by police, in an area which had already been closed off to traffic to aid social distancing.

Several yellow police evidence markers were on the ground, some near to broken glass, and forensics officers were seen collecting and bagging items.

Edmund Street was also sealed off as officers removed a drain cover and sifted material.

Among the muck and debris could be seen a black-handled kitchen knife with a serrated blade, which was separated and quickly removed by officers.

A short distance away was what appeared to be a trail of blood spots at the pavement in Newhall Street, leading down to Edmund Street.

Ms Curran, a promoter for multiple clubs, said bars were packed and it appeared to be the busiest night since coronavirus lockdown restrictions were lifted, and as the night went on and revellers got drunk "tensions were starting to rise" and fights started happening.

She said quite a few people were kicked out of venues and more police officers arrived as fights broke out, saying the night "had just turned into a bad vibe" before the larger brawl.

Police are "constantly" on patrol in the area, and she hailed the force for a speedy response.

The Arcadian Centre is a hub of restaurants, bars, cafes, clubs and hotels. Featuring an open air central piazza, it is close to the city's Chinese Quarter and Gay Village areas.

Chief Superintendent Steve Graham said the stabbings were linked and police are searching for one suspect.

He told reporters officers were called to reports of a stabbing in Constitution Hill, north of the city centre, and the suspect worked north-to-south.

He said: "We are still in the early stages of that inquiry but I can say that we are treating all four of those incidents as a linked series.

"We are searching for one suspect and inquiries to identify and then trace that suspect are ongoing."

Two people who were critically injured are still being worked upon as a result of the injuries they received as part of that attack.

Mr Graham said there was "absolutely no suggestion at all" the series of stabbings was related to terrorism.

He added the stabbings appeared to be a random attack and there was no evidence the incident was motivated by hate towards any particular group nor gang-related. He said claims that gunshots were fired were not true.

"Clearly those of you who know Birmingham city centre know that Hurst Street is part of the gay community's night-time economy but there's absolutely no suggestion at this point that this was in any way, shape or form motivated by hate."

Asked whether the incident was gang related, he said: "At this stage we can't find a particular motive but it does appear to be random in terms of the selection of the people who were attacked."

He also said there was no evidence to show it was related to "people squabbling over tables" in the city centre.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson thanked emergency services who responded to the scene of a stabbing in Birmingham where one man died and a further seven people were injured.

Writing on Twitter, Mr Johnson said: "All my thoughts are with those affected by the terrible incident in Birmingham last night.

"My thanks to the emergency services who are working hard at the scene."

Home Secretary Priti Patel said "all her thoughts" were with people affected by a stabbing in Birmingham in which one man died and seven people were injured.

In a statement on Twitter, she said: "All my thoughts are with those affected by the shocking incident in Birmingham last night.

"Our emergency services are working hard to find whoever is responsible and bring them to justice."

Speaking on Sky News' Sophy Ridge on Sunday programme, Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said those in the vicinity of the major incident should be "very vigilant".

He said: "My thoughts are with the victims and their families, there is obviously an ongoing police investigation.

"I can't say too much more at this stage but people should be very vigilant if they are in that area."

Later, Mr Raab told BBC One's Andrew Marr Show that a "very serious incident" had occurred, adding he was not aware of any information providing a link to terrorism.

He said: "We know it's a very serious incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families.

"I think at this point in time we don't know too much more than that other than to say the public should be very vigilant."

Mr Marr asked: "At this stage we're not treating it as a terrorist incident?"

The Foreign Secretary replied: "I haven't got any information to that extent."

Birmingham Yardley MP Jess Phillips tweeted: "Sending thoughts to all involved and thanks to our emergency services. Will be working with the police to do all we can to help anyone harmed."

Meanwhile, it was a violent night in London as two teenagers were stabbed at West Ham Tube station, and five men were injured in a "stabbing attack" in Bexleyheath.

Officers were called to reports of a stabbing in The Broadway, Bexleyheath, at around 9.30pm on Saturday.

One of the injured men has potentially life-threatening injuries, the Metropolitan Police said.

In the east London incident, one male was found injured on the platform of West Ham station soon before 7pm on Saturday.

A second teenager was discovered soon afterwards at the Abbey Road DLR station, located around half a mile away, police said.

Both teenagers were treated by paramedics at the scene before being taken to hospital.

In a statement British Transport Police said the pair were injured following "an altercation" at West Ham station.

The force said: "It appears that two men met as they passed each other on a stairway at the station.

"Following what seems to have been an altercation between the two men, one male received stab wounds and collapsed at the station.

"The other male, who also received stab wounds, got on to a train to Abbey Road DLR Station."

UPDATE: A
suspect has now been arrested

Hundreds of Armed Police Raid Traveller Site in One of Biggest Gun Crime Stings Ever

Armed officers hurled flashbangs to distract suspects before arresting six at a caravan park in Orpington, South London following months of work by local police pursuing tip-offs

Daily Mirror UK, 9 SEP 2020.

The armed officers, assisted by aerial support overhead, arrested a number of suspects.

Hundreds of officers raided a traveller's site in one of the biggest weapons stings in UK history.

Shortly before 3am this morning specialist Met Police units entered the Orpington camp.

The activity followed months of work by local police gathering evidence.

The Force had been tipped off that people on the static caravan park were selling guns to criminal gangs.

Scotland Yard's elite Counter Terrorism Specialist Firearms Officers threw flash-bangs to distract the suspects before storming the caravans.

They were backed up by local officers from the south London borough and the Metropolitan Police's TSG public order unit.

Six people were arrested in the sting over offences related to drugs, stolen goods and burglary.

The Force seized 17 dogs (Image: SKY NEWS)

Commander Kyle Gordon, the lead for the Met's firearms operations, said: "Any operation where there may be firearms involved requires a lot of planning and a lot of specialist assets.

"As well as the local safer neighbourhood teams and officers that are leading this operation, of course we have our specialist firearms command involved, and a number of public order assets as well.

"Those teams will do everything they can to identify the risk in advance so they can plan around that to minimise the risk - not just to the people on the site and the wider public, but also to themselves as well."

Two people found at the site are being cared for by the force's modern slavery team, and 17 dogs have been seized....

Investigators will now spend around two days searching the 22-pitch site, following intelligence about where guns might be hidden.

Superintendent Andy Brittain said the force is working with the local council to accommodate residents including children while the searches are carried out.
