The Russian Embassy in Dublin has announced that next week's scheduled naval drills will be relocated outside the Irish Exclusive Economic Zone following pressure from Irish fishermen.

Irish fishermen met with Russia's Ambassador in Dublin on Thursday where a "buffer zone" was agreed upon for the Russian Navy's upcoming military exercises off the Irish coast.

Irish Central. 1 FEB. 2022.

Russia will relocate its scheduled military drills so that they take place outside the Irish Exclusive Economic Zone following pressure from Irish fishermen and the Irish Government.

Russian Ambassador to Ireland Yuri Filatov said in a statement on Saturday evening that the Russian Ministry of Defence had made the gesture out of "goodwill".

"In response to the requests from the Irish government as well as from the Irish South and West Fish Producer's Organisation, the Minister of Defence of the Russian Federation Sergey Shoigu has made a decision, as a gesture of goodwill, to relocate the exercises by the Russian Navy, planned for February 3-8, outside the Irish exclusive economic zone (EEZ), with the aim not to hinder fishing activities by the Irish vessels in the traditional fishing areas," Filatov said in a statement on Saturday.

27 January, 2022: Brendan Byrne, CEO of the Irish Fish Processors and Exporters Association (IFPEA), and Patrick Murphy, CEO Irish South and West Fish Producers Organisation (ISWFPO), outside the Russian Embassy, Dublin after their meeting with the Russian Ambassador to Ireland, H.E. Yuriy Filatov.

Earlier Patrick Murphy and Brendan Byrne, representatives of Ireland’s fishing industries, met with Russia’s Ambassador to Ireland Yury Filatov regarding their concerns about the Russian Navy’s military exercises scheduled to take place off the coast of Ireland from next week.

The story has become a major one on the US networks with the MSNBC top-rated "Rachel Maddow Show" reporting near record level interest when they ran a piece on the standoff The anchor devoted about ten minutes to the story on Thursday evening.

The new development occurred after Patrick Murphy, chief executive of the Irish South and West Fish Producers Organisation, and Brendan Byrne, chief executive of the Irish Fish Processors and Exporters Association, met with Ambassador Filatov in Dublin on Thursday morning.

They stated they had received guarantees that there would be no disruption to their fishing schedule caused by the Russian Navy exercise.

However, the Russian embassy quickly shot back that they had given no such guarantees.

After the meeting on Thursday, Nikita Isakin, a spokesperson for the Russian Embassy in Ireland, said in a statement: “The ambassador underscored that the exercises, given their small scale and location, will not adversarially affect the traditional fishing areas.”

The statement also said that "there was no discussion of guarantees of any kind" during Thursday's meeting.

Initially, the Russian Embassy in Ireland described Thursday's meeting as a “constructive and positive” discussion:
