Boy, 16, Arrested After Girl, 6, Lured From Playground and Sexually Assaulted

A teenage boy has been arrested after a six-year-old girl was allegedly lured from a playground and sexually assaulted, police said.

The girl was out with her family at Rowheath Park in Bournville when she was "momentarily lured" into a nearby wooded area around midday on Saturday.

The victim told her mum about the alleged sexual assault when they were returning home from the park.

Police issued an urgent appeal to try and find the suspect, BirminghamLive reports.

Hours later, they shared an update saying a 16-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault in Birmingham.

He remained in custody for questioning this afternoon.

The update from West Midlands Police read: "A 16-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault.

"Earlier today, we appealed for your help after a child reported a sexual assault in Rowheath Park, Birmingham at around midday yesterday (18 September).

"The six-year-old girl was with her family on the playground when she was momentarily lured into a nearby wooded area.

"The boy was arrested earlier in Birmingham, he’s in our custody for questioning.

"Our investigation is ongoing and we continue to support the little girl and her family. They have of course, been kept updated with this development."

Police said they have deployed extra officers to the area to speak to local residents and park-goers to offer reassurance amid the investigation.

Detective Inspector Matt Stone, from the public protection unit, has urged people not to make comments speculating on the circumstances of the incident.

He said: “This arrest is a significant development as our investigation continues at pace.

“I’d still urge anyone with any information, who hasn’t yet contacted us, to do as soon as possible.

“There have been lots of comments on social media. I thank people for sharing our appeal, and those who got in touch with information.

"However I’d ask that people do not speculate on the circumstances, its unhelpful to our investigation and distressing for those involved.”
