She is expected to challenge claims she groomed underage girls for convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein for sexual abuse. He died in prison in 2019.

Ms Maxwell, 59, has been in a US jail since her arrest last year, awaiting the high-profile six-week trial.

Ms Maxwell, who also has American and French citizenship, has pleaded not guilty to all the charges against her.

Lawyers for Ms Maxwell, as well as family members, have repeatedly complained about her conditions in jail and her legal team has made several unsuccessful applications for bail.

Epstein died in a New York prison cell on 10 August 2019 as he awaited his trial on sex trafficking charges.


The trial of Ms Maxwell, the daughter of late media mogul Robert Maxwell, is scheduled for 08:30 local time (13:30 GMT) on Monday.

The prosecution is then expected to lay out the case and preview evidence and witnesses - but the defence is likely to question the credibility of some of the witnesses.

No cameras will be allowed in the courtroom.

According to a letter by Ms Maxwell's lawyer, the defence will say her accusers might have faulty memories.

The letter says that leading experts in psychiatry and memory will be brought in to testify in her defence.

What are The Charges?

Ms Maxwell is accused of having helped Epstein sexually abuse underage girls.

US prosecutors allege she "played a critical role in the grooming and abuse" of minors.

Four charges relate to the years 1994-97 when she was, according to an indictment, among Epstein's closest associates and also in an "intimate relationship" with him.

Two other charges - of sex trafficking conspiracy and sex trafficking of a minor - came in an amended indictment and relate to the period 2001 and 2004.

Sarah Ransome, one of Epstein's alleged victims, has told the BBC's Panorama programme that Ms Maxwell worked closely with him.

She said: "Ghislaine controlled the girls. She was like the madam. She was like the nuts and bolts of the sex trafficking operation."

A Second Set of Charges

Prosecutors say a fourth victim has been identified. The victim was allegedly abused in 2001 when she was 14 years old. Ms Maxwell denies these charges.

The British publishing heiress for years dodged the press as her accusers came forward with shocking and disturbing claims.

In the long and twisted saga of Jeffrey Epstein's sex trafficking scandal, his arrest and death under unusual circumstances, many questioned whether this trial would in fact take place.

Legal experts say this is one of the most high-profile cases to try a woman for allegedly facilitating a sex trafficking operation.

The four underage girls in the indictment, now grown women, are expected to take the stand to tell their stories under oath.

It's unclear if Ghislaine Maxwell will do the same. Her brother, Ian Maxwell says at least one sibling will be present every day of the trial to support her.

This case will be narrowly focused on the charges in the indictment, and therefore will not answer every burning question around Epstein's sex trafficking ring. But it will add another piece to the puzzle.


Who is Ghislaine Maxwell?

Born outside Paris on Christmas Day, 1961, Ms Maxwell grew up in a country mansion, went to Oxford University and speaks several languages.

She is Robert Maxwell's ninth and youngest child.

She is said to have had a very close relationship with her late father, and he named his luxury yacht - the Lady Ghislaine - after her.

Soon after her father's death in 1991, Ms Maxwell left the UK to settle in America, where she worked in real estate, and not long after met Jeffrey Epstein.

She sold her Manhattan townhouse in 2016, and kept a low profile until she was arrested last July at her secluded mansion in the state of New Hampshire.

GHISLAINE Maxwell was in the room when Jeffrey Epstein sexually abused a 14-year-old girl, a court heard.


The first of four accusers took to the stand on Tuesday in New York as Maxwell faces six charges of sexual abuse and trafficking over her alleged role with Epstein.

Epstein was a multimillionaire sex offender who allegedly used his wealth and influence to construct a web of sexual slavery - with Maxwell as his "madam".

She faces charges relating to four victims, with the first - speaking under pseudonym "Jane" - appearing today at the courthouse in New York.

Jane claimed that she was just 14 when Epstein first sexually abused her - and said Maxwell was in the room at the time.

The alleged victim said she was "frozen in fear" having never seen a penis before.

She claimed that Maxwell would also instruct her how to give Epstein sexual massages and sometimes physically participated in the encounters.

And at one point during her testimony, Jane started to sob.


Maxwell denies all charges - and her lawyers claim she is being made a "scapegoat" after Epstein's death.

Jane said she first met Epstein and Maxwell in 1994 when she was attending a music camp in pursuit of a singing career, she said.

She said she was eating ice cream with friends when Maxwell approached with a Yorkshire Terrier, drawing their attention.

After her friends left, she spoke with Epstein, who had then arrived and introduced himself as a donor.

They discovered that they both lived in Palm Beach, Florida, she said.

The woman and her mother soon received an invitation to Epstein’s home

Her mother wasn’t included in subsequent invites but she remained very impressed with the wealth and status of Epstein and Maxwell.


She told the court her mother believed the pair must really thought daughter was special, the woman testified.

Soon, Epstein and Maxwell were taking her shopping for clothes, including underwear from Victoria’s Secret and she told the court: ... "I felt special."


FELT ASHAMED

But the cycle of abuse started when Epstein abruptly took her by hand one day and said “follow me” before taking her to a pool house at the home.

She said that he removed his trousers, pulled her close to him and began performing a sex act.

“I was terrified and felt gross and I felt ashamed,” she said.

Jane told the court she was subjected to abuse "every time" she visited his house.

Sometimes she would be made to participate in an "orgy", she said.

And on one occasion she watched as Epstein fondled himself as Ghislaine "rubbed" and "kissed" him, the court heard.

"She was very casual, like this was entirely normal. I was confused. When you are 14 you have no idea what is going on," she said.


She also claimed on one occasion she saw Maxwell and four other women topless by a pool.

And in another instance she was brought up to Epstein's bedroom at his mansion in Palm Beach.

"They moved me over to the bed and took their clothes off. And they started to sort of like fondle each other," she said.

"They asked me to take my top off. Then there were hands everywhere."

Epstein would like to massaged "hard" - including acts like "twisting his nipples", she added.

She said sexual encounters became routine after that with Maxwell sometimes present.

Maxwell would instruct Jane on "how Jeffrey likes to be massaged".

He would pay for things for Jane, such as clothes and singing lessons, the court heard.


And the couple would allegedly talk about their high profile social circle, mentioning names such as Donald Trump and Bill Clinton.


But defence lawyer Laura Menninger immediately attacked the witness's credibility.

The lawyer wondered why she waited over 20 years to report the alleged abuse by Maxwell to law enforcement.

She also asked why she brought two personal injury lawyers along to her first meeting with the FBI.


VERY CASUAL

Menninger also asked if it was true she had previously spoken to her siblings and others close to her about Epstein’s behavior, but left Maxwell out of the earlier accounts.

“You never mentioned Ghislaine Maxwell?” the lawyer asked.

Under cross examination from Menninger, the woman admitted she was awarded $5 million from a fund set up to compensate Epstein’s victims.

Testimony from Epstein's pilot earlier in the day saw the two former US Presidents named as passengers on the multimillionaire's private jet, along with Prince Andrew.

Jane claimed she travelled with the couple and visited properties in New York and New Mexico with flights on his private jet.

Maxwell first appeared in court this morning just after 8.30am wearing a mask, a beige turtleneck sweater and black slacks while cradling a lime green folder.

She waved to her sister Isabel who is in court to support her - and was also seen taking notes and passing them to her lawyers.

Prosecutors argue Maxwell "served up" young girls to Epstein as part of a pyramid scheme of abuse as she appeared in court in New York.

Epstein and Maxwell rubbed shoulders with the world's rich and famous - allegedly hiding in plain sight amid a web of sordid sex abuse.

She was a close friend of Prince Andrew, allegedly being the one who introduced him to Epstein.

Her lawyer Bobbi Sternheim claimed "ever since Eve, women have been blamed for the evil deeds of men".

She said: "Ghislaine Maxwell is not Jeffrey Epstein or any of the other men, moguls and media giants who abuse women."

The defence are expected to hinge much of their case on going after the victims.

However, the prosecution paint a very different picture of Ghislaine as instrumental in Epstein's web of money, sex and lies.

Lawyers called the 59-year-old Brit heiress a "dangerous predator" and said she and Epstein were “partners in crime”.

Maxwell is alleged to have snared girls as young as 14 into a "nightmare" after promising them "the world".

She is accused of walking girls into Epstein's liar where she watched as he molested them - and sometimes even joined in.

Convicted sex offender Epstein killed himself while awaiting trial for further sex trafficking charges in August 2019.

She also faces two other charges of perjury over allegations she lied in a deposition in a separate civil suit, but these will be tried separately.

Maxwell was arrested suddenly in July 2020 - and has been held in prison ever since as she was deemed a flight risk.

A woman who has accused Ghislaine Maxwell of grooming her to be abused by paedophile Jeffrey Epstein once took a flight with Prince Andrew, a court has heard.


The victim, known in court as “Jane’, was asked about her time on board the late billionaire’s private jet nicknamed the ‘Lolita Express'.

Cross-examined by defence counsel for Maxwell during the British socialite's sex abuse case, attorney Laura Menninger said: “Do you remember Prince Andrew being on a flight with you?”

Jane replied: “Yes”.

Today's testimony is the first time an alleged victim who witnessed the Duke of York, 61, on an Epstein flight has appeared before a jury.

The flight, which 'Jane' is listed as being on board with Andrew was when she 20-years-old flying from the billionaire's ranch in New Mexico to his home in Palm Beach.

The Duke has been under fire for his close ties to the late paedophile, who committed suicide in August 2019 as he awaited trial for sex trafficking.

Andrew is also facing a lawsuit from Virginia Giuffre, who claims Epstein and Maxwell made her have sex with the UK royal three times, starting in 2001 when she was 17.

The royal has emphatically denied the allegations and any wrongdoing.

Jane, whose identity is protected, testified to the flights she made aboard the paedophile’s private jet claiming she was trafficked across the States to be abused by the American financier.

The victim, who claims she first met Maxwell and Epstein at the Interlochen Music Camp in Michigan when she was 14-years-old, also alleged she was introduced to Donald Trump before he was President.

She said Epstein took her to the businessman's Mar-a-Lago resort when she was a teenager.

The woman said she was driven to Trump’s Palm Beach estate in a dark green car when she was 14 in 1994.

During cross-examination, Jane made it clear in one answer she was never asked or ordered to have sex with any of Epstein’s powerful friends.

Maxwell's youngest alleged victim earlier told the Lower Manhattan Court she does "not believe I have come up with a memory" of the British socialite being involved in sexual abuse after her testimony was challenged,

The witness was forced to deny inventing a memory in the last two years of her first meeting with the defendant.

Maxwell, who was described as "dangerous" during the opening statements of the trial, is accused of preying on vulnerable young girls and luring them to massage rooms to be molested by disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein between 1994 and 2004.

Jane told the court on Tuesday she had been summoned to an orgy by Maxwell and Epstein at the age of 14, which had left her "frozen with fear".

During cross-examination yesterday, Ms Menninger said: "It is true that you do not recall Ghislaine ever touching you."

"That's not true," Jane replied.

On Tuesday, Jane said she did not tell anybody about any abuse because she was "terrified" and "felt gross and ashamed".

She also told jurors Epstein used sex toys on her "even though it hurt", and he and Maxwell fondled each other while "casually giggling" in front of the teenager.

Ms Menninger said: "You spoke to the government in December 2019 with your lawyers there and you told them at that time that you were not sure whether Maxwell ever touched you during these encounters."

"I don't recall," the witness replied.

"You told the Government you were not sure if Ghislaine ever kissed you."

"I don't recall."

"You told the Government you had no memory of Ghislaine being present when you claim Epstein engaged in any sexual contact, correct?"

"I don't recall."

"As you sit here today, you are not sure you were ever alone in a room with Ghislaine and Epstein, correct?"

"No."

Jane told the court it was correct to say Maxwell never watched her perform oral sex on Epstein.

Asked if she had come up with a memory of Maxwell being involved in any sexual encounters, Jane said: "I don't believe I have come up with a memory, no."

Before day three of her trial, Maxwell entered the courtroom and nodded at her sister Isabel and brother Kevin, sitting in the front row of the public gallery.

Wearing a charcoal grey jumper and a black face mask, she had separate conversations with both siblings as they leaned over the bench in front of them.

Maxwell embraced her counsel a number of times before the beginning of the court session and took a number of sips from her water bottle.

The full indictment against her lists six charges: conspiracy to entice minors to travel to engage in illegal sex acts; enticement of a minor to travel to engage in illegal sex acts; conspiracy to transport minors with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity; transporting a minor with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity; sex trafficking conspiracy; and sex trafficking of a minor.

Maxwell, who has been held in a US jail since her arrest in July last year, denies all charges.

If convicted she faces up to 70 years in prison.

Paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein's long-time pilot has testified at the trial of Ghislaine Maxwell that he flew VIPs to luxury locations worldwide.

Larry Visoski, the first witness in Ms Maxwell's sex-trafficking trial, recalled flying Prince Andrew, Bill Clinton, Donald Trump and Kevin Spacey.

Ms Maxwell denies the charges and says she is being used as a scapegoat for Epstein, who died in prison in 2019.

But prosecutors argue the pair were "partners in crime" in sex abuse.

Testimony given in court on Tuesday included harrowing details of the alleged abuse.

Ms Maxwell has been in a US jail since her arrest last year, and faces up to 80 years in prison if convicted.

Prosecutors say the British socialite, who also has US and French citizenship, recruited and groomed underage girls for her long-term companion Epstein to abuse.

Asked to describe Ms Maxwell's standing in Epstein's operations, Mr Visoski described her as "the number two".

"Epstein was the big number one," he told the New York court on Tuesday.

Mr Visoski served as Epstein's pilot for over 25 years. During his testimony, prosecutors showed the jurors photographs of Epstein's properties.

He testified that he had never seen any sexual activity during trips, although the ****pit door was always kept closed during flights on the plane nicknamed the "Lolita Express".

He also recalled flying Virginia Roberts Giuffre, who says she was sexually assaulted by Prince Andrew.

The Queen's 61-year-old second son has consistently denied the allegation.

Asked if he remembered Ms Giuffre, Mr Visoski said: "Yes. A shorter woman with dirty blonde hair. She didn't look young. I mean, whatever you decipher is the definition of young. But she was a woman in my category."

Asked to describe Ms Maxwell's relationship to Epstein he said it was "more personal than business".

"I wouldn't characterise it as romantic," he added.

Another woman testifying under the pseudonym "Jane" told the court that Ms Maxwell had frequently been in the room with her when she had sexual relations with Epstein while just 14 years old.

Jane told the court she had met Epstein and Ms Maxwell while attending summer camp in Michigan 1994. He was introduced to her as a wealthy donor who offered scholarships to pupils.

Epstein had promised to fund her education but instead abused her, prosecutors said. She testified that her father had died one year earlier from cancer and her family was struggling financially at the time.

In graphic detail, she described her alleged abuse and said that Ms Maxwell, who she said was present for much of it, was "very casual" about the encounters.

Jane said that Ms Maxwell would talk to her about sex, and that she soon began visiting Epstein's home every week or two.

She said her first sexual experience came when they were having a discussion about her future.

She said that Epstein led her from his office to his pool house, then pulled down his pants and started masturbating.

"I was frozen in fear, I had never seen a penis before," the witness said. "I was terrified and felt gross and like I felt ashamed."

It was not long after that she had her first sexual experience with Ms Maxwell, she testified, saying it took place at Epstein's home in Palm Beach, Florida.

Jane said that the defendant and Epstein had her follow them to his bedroom. They took their clothes off and "started sort of fondling each other and kind of casually giggling", she said.

"I was just standing there and he asked me to take my top off and then their hands [were] everywhere and Jeffrey proceeded to masturbate and Ghislaine was rubbing him and kissing him and fondling," she continued.

She added that she travelled with Epstein and Ms Maxwell about 10 times, mainly between his homes in New York and New Mexico while she was between the ages of 14 and 16.

Jane also described "orgies" with other participants, and described feeling pain during the alleged encounters.

Both Epstein and Ms Maxwell would brag about their connections, including the famous people that they knew, she said.

Jane is the first of four accusers expected to testify at trial.

Ms Maxwell has pleaded not guilty to eight charges of sex trafficking and other crimes.

The allegations at trial cover the period 1994 to 2004. Prosecutors allege Ms Maxwell was a "right-hand" partner for Epstein, helping to groom vulnerable teenage girls as young as 14 for abuse at his luxurious residences.

They described her as "the lady of the house" who "helped normalise abusive sexual conduct".

Twin Torpedo Sex Toys Shown in Court After Victim Testifies in ‘Madam’ Case

THE sex trafficking trial of Jeffrey's Epstein's alleged "madam" Ghislaine Maxwell has started, and on Friday new evidence was examined in the courtroom including a massage table and “Twin Torpedo” sex toy.

The table, which was reportedly seized from Epstein's Florida estate, was briefly looked at by a police officer who took the stand.

Assistant US Attorney Maurene Comey asked the officer questions about a search warrant that was carried out at the Palm Beach estate in October 2005.

Maxwell reportedly showed no reaction as the table was examined.

This comes after the first accuser, identified only as Jane, took the stand earlier this week, alleging that Epstein asked for frequent massages during which sex toys would be used.

One Palm Beach police offer alleged that the "Twin Torpedo" sex toys were found in a closet in Epstein's estate.


HOUSEKEEPER CONFIRMED MEETING VIRGINIA ROBERTS

Former staff member Juan Alessi said that two girls, who appeared underage, also frequently stayed at the mansion.

He told the court one was Virginia Roberts - who alleges she was forced to sleep with Prince Andrew three times - and the alleged victim in the trial who uses the pseudonym 'Jane.'

Asked how old Jane was when he first met her, Alessi said: "Appeared 14 or 15. She was beautiful, beautiful eyes, long brunette hair, very pleasant.

"Three times she was there with her mother. Then, without her mother. Many times."


EPSTEIN'S PROPERTY EMPIRE

Epstein's real estate catalog included Little St James, his private island in the US Virgin Islands, worth about £50 million.

Epstein also owned the £14 million neighbouring island, Great St James, as well a £12 million mansion in Florida.

Other properties included an 8,000-acre, £21 million ranch in New Mexico, a £10 million Paris apartment, and a £57 million seven-storey townhouse on New York's Upper East Side.


EPSTEIN'S AIRCRAFT FLEET

Epstein’s aircraft fleet included a Hawker Siddeley 125, a Gulfstream G2B and a helicopter.

There was also a Boeing 727, which is more than 130ft long, that was dubbed the “Lolita Express” amid claims he used it to fly underage girls around the world.

That plane was fitted with an office dubbed “the red room” because of its furniture, a master bedroom with a queen-sized bed, a lounge area with a huge round sofa, plus a “full decked-out” kitchen.


'THREE MASSAGES A DAY'

On Thursday, former Epstein housekeeper Juan Alessi was asked "how many massages would Mr Epstein get a day?"

Illustrator Elizabeth Williams, who has been sketching people in court for 40 years, was at a pre-trial hearing in November when Maxwell began staring at her while drawing.

Speaking of the first time she spotted the English heiress sketching her, Ms Williams exclusively told The Sun: “It was the first thing she did when she got into court.

ALLEGED VICTIM MET TRUMP AT MAR-A-LAGO

Jeffrey Epstein introduced a 14-year-old alleged sex abuse victim to Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort, Ghislaine Maxwell’s trial heard this week.

The court was also told she once participated in a beauty pageant sponsored by the former president.

Maxwell’s first accuser – who appeared under the pseudonym “Jane” – took the stand during the ongoing trial in New York.

During cross examination, she was asked by Maxwell’s lawyers if Epstein had ever introduced her to Trump.

She agreed she had and claims she was driven to Mar-a-Lago by Epstein in a dark green car when she was 14.


MYSTERY OF ‘HIDDEN CAMERAS’ AT EPSTEIN HOME

It has long been reported and rumoured that Epstein and Maxwell had a complex networks of cameras and recording devices.

The multi-millionaire is alleged to have had these set up at his many homes around the world, and its speculated it could have been part of a blackmail plot.

However, the existence of any footage from these cameras have never emerged.

Details about this could emerge during the court case as part of victim's testimony, with alleged victim Annie Farmer's sister Maria making such claims.

Maria is not part of the case against Maxwell, but also alleges she was abused by the duo.

Farmer claims large rooms at Epstein's sprawling Zorro Ranch were for housing computers and video equipment for a surveillance network.


'YOU SEE NOTHING, HEAR NOTHING, SAY NOTHING'

Employees at Epstein's Florida mansion were told to "be cautious of voice levels and noise", according to a 58-page handbook which an employee claims he was given.

The book, which was submitted into evidence and was written by a "Countess", the court heard, was released Friday showing yet more strict rules staff members were told to follow.

Employees were also told: "Remember that you see nothing, hear nothing, say nothing, except to answer a question directed at you."


WHAT ARE THE ALLEGATIONS SURROUNDING GEORGE CLOONEY?

Ghislaine Maxwell is accused of boasting about performing a sex act on George Clooney in a toilet.

Virginia Giuffre made the allegation against Maxwell, in a manuscript of her memoirs released by a New York court.

Giuffre claimed Maxwell boasted about it during a globe-trotting trip they both made in 2001 which culminated in Giuffre meeting Prince Andrew for the first time in London.

It has not been reported when the alleged incident between Maxwell and Clooney may have taken place, nor has there been any report of Clooney being involved in any wrong doing in connection to the Jeffrey Epstein crimes.

Notable politicians, billionaires, and celebrities have been connected to Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell.

Prince Andrew has been accused of sexual assault by Virginia Giuffre. A judge dismissed criminal charges in 2015, but Giuffre is pursuing a sexual assault lawsuit.

Prosecutors at Ghislaine Maxwell’s sex trafficking trial want the pictures and outfits to be used in evidence to show the millionaire's “interest in underage girls”.

A portable, inflatable massage table - reportedly green in colour - was also entered as evidence.

Maxwell, 59, is accused of preying on vulnerable young girls and luring them to massage rooms to be molested by her former lover between 1994 and 2004.

On Friday, the jury at Maxwell's trial was shown footage from a 2005 raid at Epstein's Palm Beach home.

‘JANE’S’ TESTIMONY, PART TWO

Jane previously told how the British socialite was "in the room" when much of the abuse occurred - including when she was just 14.

She repeatedly said she could either not recall or claimed there were errors in the initial transcription of her comments when speaking to prosecutors in 2019.

It appears a key part of Maxwell's defense lawyer's strategy is attempting to suggest the victim's memories have changed over time.


'JANE'S' TESTIMONY

Maxwell's first accuser "Jane" took the stand on Wednesday on day three of the trial.

She claimed Maxwell fondled her as Epstein pleasured himself before the twisted financier abused her with sex toys.

Jane also told the court that an "orgy" took place in the mansion's massage room on multiple occasions and both Maxwell and Epstein allegedly took part.


HOW LONG COULD MAXWELL FACE IN PRISON?

If convicted on all counts, Maxwell could face up to 80 years in prison.

Depending on how the trial goes and whether she is convicted, she could spend the rest of her life behind bars.

Prosecutors are seeking to prove that Ms Maxwell was so close to Epstein that she must be complicit in his crimes. Lawyers told the jury on Monday that the vast sums of money she received from Epstein – still only a fraction of his estimated $630m fortune – showed what an integral figure Ms Maxwell was in his life.

Others have gone further, and suggest Ms Maxwell was paid to groom underage girls for Epstein to sexually abuse.

“So many have asked me: why would Ghislaine do it? Why would a woman bring girls to her boyfriend for him to sexually abuse?” asked Lisa Bloom, a lawyer for a number of Epstein’s victims.

“The prosecution theory is pretty simple: money. Shocking amounts of it. What a life she lived with Epstein's vast wealth. Here's but one small example,” she said, referring to the $18.5 transfer from Epstein to Ms Maxwell. Ms Bloom is not involved in the current trial.

Ms Maxwell denies all charges. Her legal team, for whom she has paid roughly $7m since 2020, has so far sought to discredit the testimony of alleged victims in court, suggesting they are seeking financial compensation.

Following her father Robert’s death in 1991 Ghislaine Maxwell boarded a Concorde and moved to America, reportedly living off an annual income of £80,000 from a trust fund established in Liechtenstein by her father.

But as time passed her wealth rapidly grew – and with it the mystery surrounding where it all came from.

Aside from the money wired directly from Epstein, there are other clues to where her reserves come from.


Earlier this year, she sold her Belgravia home for £1.75 million to help fund her expensive legal team.


The white mews house with red front door is where Prince Andrew was pictured with his arm around Virginia Roberts Giuffre. The Belgravia home, near Hyde Park was reportedly purchased by a property developer.

Her five-story Manhattan townhouse was sold in 2016 for $15 million by a company that used the address of Epstein’s New York office.

And in 2020 Maxwell was arrested at a $1 million luxury four-bedroom New Hampshire house that was bought the year before in cash.


Prosecutors said she had been living on the 156-acre property, which was acquired in an all-cash purchase, “through a carefully anonymised LLC”.

A listing on property website Zillow described the house as an “amazing retreat for the nature lover who also wants total privacy”.

In an attempt to prove Epstein paid Ms Maxwell millions directly, a JP Morgan executive was called to the witness box to verify bank statements.


The couple appeared to have bank accounts linked to New York, Palm Beach, Florida, and the US Virgin Islands, an infamous tax haven.

Bank statements shown for the first time detailed wire transfers of $18.3 million in 1999, $5 million in 2002 and $7.4 million in 2007, in evidence that offered an extraordinary insight into how the heiress financed her lavish lifestyle.

The transfers showed Epstein, the late financier, cashing out shares and wiring money to accounts in the name of both Ms Maxwell and “Air Ghislaine Inc.”


One payment, in June 2007, came from an account linked to Epstein in the US Virgin Islands and was transferred from Ms Maxwell’s personal account with JP Morgan. From there it was sent to a company called Air Ghislaine Inc. That company then purchased a green Sikorsky S76C helicopter and downpayment on an “executive finish”.

Following her arrest in July 2020, Ms Maxwell, 59, who has spent the last 15 months in a federal prison in Brooklyn, put up a staggering some $28 million in bond to secure her release – dwarfing the figure put up by Ponzi scheme banker Bernie Madoff and thought to be one of the highest ever bond packages offered in the US.


“At a basic level, the defence argument is that she cannot remember off the top of her head just how many millions of dollars she has,” assistant US Attorney Alison Moe said at one of Ms Maxwell’s bail hearings as she criticised Ms Maxwell’s lack of transparency around her wealth. The prosecutor said Ms Maxwell’s claims to have less than $1 million in the bank and no monthly income was “implausible.”

The US government said they had identified more than 15 different bank accounts associated with the heiress from 2016 with balances ranging from hundreds of thousands of dollars to more than $20 million.

After the date of the last transfer, the government previously revealed it had information that, between 2007 and 2011, more than $20 million was transferred from offshore accounts associated with Jeffrey Epstein to several associated with Ms Maxwell.

Millions were later transferred back.

The transactions themselves, however, could yet play a crucial role in the 'trial of the century'.

On Wednesday, the ex-boyfriend, identified by the pseudonym Shawn, told the court he had been present when their mutual friend Virginia Roberts (now Virginia Giuffre) first told Carolyn of the money-making opportunity, and was occasionally present when Ms Maxwell called to schedule massage sessions.

Although Shawn said he never met Epstein or Ms Maxwell, he further corroborated Carolyn's testimony earlier in the trial that she only called the latter by her last name, suggesting she "didn't have the reading ability" to say Ms Maxwell's first name, Ghislaine.

"She was a child," he said of his partner at the time. She "only had two jobs ever. She worked at Arby's [US fast food chain] and she worked for Jeffrey".

The woman known in court as Carolyn, the third of four accusers expected to testify in Ms Maxwell's trial, broke down in tears under cross-examination late on Tuesday as defence lawyers suggested her drug addiction may have influenced her testimony.

Never-before-seen photos show Epstein-Maxwell bond

The court also heard from David Rodgers, a former long-time pilot for Epstein, who detailed trips from his log book under questioning from prosecutors.

Mr Rodgers said Ms Giuffre, one of Epstein's most vocal accusers, flew with him 32 times in the early 2000s, while another accuser Jane - who testified last week - was aboard at least four times.

He also provided details of trips to and from Traverse City, Michigan in the summer of 1994. Jane has alleged she met Epstein as a 14-year-old, at a summer arts camp, in the area.

On Wednesday, prosecutors also showed jurors photos of Ms Maxwell with Epstein relaxing at Balmoral, the British royal family's Scottish estate.

The undated photo appears to have been taken in 1999, when Prince Andrew reportedly invited the couple to stay at Balmoral in the Scottish Highlands.

Ms Maxwell - who has British, American and French citizenship - has been in a US jail since her arrest last year.

In the 24-minute appearance on The Spectator’s Americano podcast, Mr Maxwell rallied behind his sister as he compared theories around the death of the convicted sex offender to the case of his own father, the media tycoon Robert Maxwell, who died in 1991.

"I don’t buy a lot of the conspiracy theories at all. It so happens that one of the conspiracy theories is about my father, that he was murdered.

"Of all of my siblings Ghislaine is the only one who happens to believe that he [Robert Maxwell] was murdered.

"And I would venture to believe that she may also think that Epstein was murdered,” he said.

Epstein, convicted in 2008 by a Florida state court of procuring a child for prostitution and of soliciting a prostitute, was found dead in his jail cell in August 2019 while awaiting trial on further charges. While the medical examiner ruled the death a suicide, his death had sparked numerous conspiracy theories including that he was murdered.

Meanwhile, the body of billionaire press baron Robert Maxwell was discovered floating in the Atlantic Ocean in 1991 after he fell overboard from his yacht, the Lady Ghislaine. While an inquest recorded the cause of death to be heart attack and accidental drowning, speculation about the incident remains rife, including whether it was a suicide or murder.

In the podcast, Mr Maxwell also recounted his only meeting with Epstein in 1996 during a lunch with his sister.

"I didn’t warm to him,” said Mr Maxwell. “He was a bit of a cagey character, clearly intelligent, had a certain charisma. But he was somebody who took things from you rather than gave things back. Not a very clubbable man, not a man you want to go and have a drink with."

Mr Maxwell also defended his sister Ghislaine over the New York trial she is currently facing.

Ms Maxwell has pleaded not guilty to eight counts of sex trafficking and other charges for her alleged role in recruiting and grooming four teenagers for Epstein to abuse between 1994 and 2004, with the prosecution resting its case on Friday after two weeks.

Maxwell faces six charges in connection to allegedly helping facilitating a sex trafficking scheme with Epstein. She faces up to 70 years in prison, and she has pleaded not guilty to all of the charges. Epstein was found dead in his jail cell in 2019 while awaiting his own trial.

It is considered a risky move for defendants to testify in their own trials given that it can expose them to vulnerabilities when they are being cross-examined by prosecutors.

In U.S. criminal trials, defendants do not have to take the witness stand, according to Reuters; however, some defendants in recent high-profile cases, including Kyle Rittenhouse and ex-officer Kim Potter, have chosen to do so.

Closing arguments are anticipated to begin on Monday, according to the news outlet.

Part of Maxwell's defense has rested on the idea that the four women who alleged that they suffered sexual abuse by Epstein may have given into "false memories," according to a psychologist's testimony.

"False memories ... can be very vivid, detailed. People can be confident about them, people can be emotional about them, even though they're false," Elizabeth Loftus, a psychologist and professor at the University of California, Irvine, noted.

Prosecutors called her a "sophisticated predator", while her lawyers alleged "sensationalism" in their final statements to jurors.

The jury withdrew for an hour of deliberations on Monday evening and will return on Tuesday to continue considering their verdict.

Judge Alison Nathan had said over the weekend that jurors would be instructed that they may choose to convict Ms Maxwell if they conclude she either ignored or "consciously avoided" knowledge of Epstein's underage sexual encounters.

What did prosecutors say?

Assistant US Attorney Alison Moe alleged Ms Maxwell was "key to the whole operation" in a New York City court on Monday.

"Ghislaine Maxwell was dangerous. She was a grown woman who preyed on vulnerable kids," she said. "It is time to hold her accountable."


Ms Moe added it was "not an accident" that the alleged victims largely came from troubled backgrounds and had similar accounts of their abuse.

"It happened again and again and again. It is powerful evidence of Maxwell's guilt."

In a rebuttal to the defence's closing arguments, prosecutor Maurene Comey said "there is not a shred of evidence that a group of lawyers got together and made up a story about Maxwell".

Ms Comey also brought up a recently disclosed $30m (£23m) money transfer from Epstein to Ms Maxwell, telling jurors it was "'we molested kids together' money".

Earlier this month, prosecutors called two dozen witnesses over 10 days as they built a narrative of Ms Maxwell as a predator who built a "pyramid scheme of abuse" with Epstein.

Four accusers took the stand. They alleged Ms Maxwell often set up, demonstrated and even took part in the massages that turned into sexual acts with Epstein.

The government also released reams of previously unseen photographs, flight logs and documents intended to link the duo as "partners in crime".


What did the defence say?

In her closing argument, lead defence counsel Laura Menninger again distanced her client from Epstein, saying: "I am not here to defend Jeffrey Epstein. He is not my client."

Ms Menninger argued Ms Maxwell had "no motive" for the alleged crimes because it made little sense that "a happy, educated women in her 30s would end her career as a facilitator of sex abuse".

"Ghislaine is being tried here for being with Jeffrey Epstein. Maybe it was the biggest mistake of her life, but it is not a crime," she said.

She accused prosecutors of cherry-picking evidence "like a sensational tabloid", claiming they had not shown jurors as many as 37,000 relevant photographs.

Listing off specific inconsistencies in the testimony of accusers, she argued witnesses inserted the defendant into their stories after the fact because "their memories have been manipulated in aid of money".

On Friday, Ms Maxwell declined to take the stand in her own defence, telling the judge the claims against her were unproven.

Her lawyers called nine witnesses over two days of testimony last week, including a cognitive psychologist who testified that people may reconstruct "false memories" of traumatic events.

The 59-year-old defendant, the daughter of a late British media tycoon, is accused of grooming teenage girls for abuse by the late Jeffrey Epstein.

The first fortnight of the trial heard emotional testimony from some of the alleged victims of Epstein and Ms Maxwell.

But this week her lawyers argued those testimonies were impacted by "[lapses in] memory, manipulation and money".

They also alleged the government needed a scapegoat for the crimes of Epstein, who killed himself in prison in 2019.

'False memory' expert on the stand

University of California psychology professor Elizabeth Loftus, the defence's star witness, told the jury that people can have "false memories" of traumatic events.

"[Memory] doesn't work like a recording device," she said. "We are actually constructing our memories while we retrieve memories."

Media coverage can act as "a source of post-event suggestion" and those who recall memories "frequently remember ourselves in a better light than perhaps is accurate", said Dr Loftus.

Ms Maxwell's lawyers also brought in two FBI agents in an effort to show discrepancies between recent testimony by Ms Maxwell's accusers and their past statements to law enforcement.


'I looked up to her'

"I highly respected Ghislaine," said her executive assistant Cimberly Espinosa, who served her from 1996 to 2003. "I looked up to her very much."

She said she booked professional massages for both Epstein and Ms Maxwell, and testified that she never saw any child abuse take place.

Epstein's former girlfriend of eight years, Eva Andersson-Dubin - a former physician and Miss Sweden winner - also took the stand on Ms Maxwell's behalf.

The New York socialite and her hedge fund manager Glenn Dubin were named in the 2016 deposition of Virginia Giuffre, the most vocal Epstein accuser.

On the stand she denied having group sex with an underage accuser, but admitted to having memory problems.

Maxwell 'preyed on vulnerable young girls'

In her opening statement, prosecutor Lara Pomerantz called Ms Maxwell a predator who recruited and groomed underage girls for her long-term companion Epstein to abuse.

"She preyed on vulnerable young girls, manipulated them, and served them up to be sexually abused," the prosecutor said.

But the defence said Ms Maxwell was being scapegoated because Epstein was no longer alive.

"The charges against Ghislaine Maxwell are for things that Jeffrey Epstein did, but she is not Jeffrey Epstein," her lawyer Bobbi Sternheim argued.


Defence accuse key accuser of acting scene

The first of four Maxwell accusers to give evidence at the trial cried as she described being sexually abused by Epstein when she was 14.

The woman, using the pseudonym Jane, said Ms Maxwell showed her how Epstein liked to be massaged, and sometimes took part in their sexual encounters.

"Ghislaine was very casual, acting like it wasn't a big deal," Jane said.


But Ms Maxwell's defence sought to find inconsistencies in Jane's testimony. Defence lawyer Laura Menninger pointed out that Jane now worked as an actress.

"You are an actor who convincingly portrays someone else for a living," the lawyer stated. "You are able to cry on command."


Employee 'told not to look Epstein in the eye'

Epstein's former housekeeper Juan Alessi recalled how Ms Maxwell had tightly controlled every detail in the financier's Florida mansion.

Ms Maxwell was the "lady of the house", ordering staff to speak only when spoken to and to avoid eye contact with Epstein, according to Mr Alessi, who said his job included cleaning their sex toys.

He said staff were given a 58-page instruction manual, warning them to keep Epstein's and Ms Maxwell's activities or whereabouts secret.

"I was supposed to be blind, deaf and dumb," Mr Alessi told the court.

Ms Maxwell's legal team sought to undermine the credibility of Mr Alessi during cross-examination, by challenging his recollection of meeting 14-year-old Jane in 1994.

Prosecutors have alleged that Epstein used massages as a "ruse" before escalating his encounters with young girls.

Michael Dawson, a detective who took part in the 2005 search, recalled how officers found a variety of sexualised images at Epstein's home. Prosecutors also displayed a photo of a box labelled "Twin Torpedos", which Det Dawson said contained sex toys and was taken from an upstairs cupboard.

Prosecutors released a collection of digital photos and files to demonstrate how close Epstein and Ms Maxwell were.


Taken from an FBI raid on Epstein's New York home in 2019, the evidence includes several pictures of the two together, sometimes embracing or being intimate with each other.

In one photo, the pair is seen relaxing at Balmoral Castle, the Queen's private Scottish residence.

Photos of Ms Maxwell were also shown mounted in parts of Epstein's Florida home. Another photo that shows her "nude and pregnant" allegedly hangs in the house, according to one of her accusers.

The collection also included a "help wanted" flyer for massage therapists in the area.





Maxwell 'dressed accuser as schoolgirl for Epstein'

A British woman using the pseudonym Kate cried on the stand as she described sexual encounters with Epstein when she was 14.

Kate said Ms Maxwell sometimes took part and acted "like it wasn't a big deal", often calling her a "good girl" and asking if she was having fun.

On one occasion, Ms Maxwell allegedly laid out a schoolgirl outfit on her bed and said: "I thought it would be fun for you to take Jeffrey his tea in this outfit." She said she wore the outfit and Epstein had sex with her.

Ms Maxwell also asked if she knew any "cute, young, pretty girls" who could perform sex acts on Epstein "because it was a lot for her to do".


Maxwell 'groped 16-year-old in topless massage'

Annie Farmer, the last accuser to take the stand, pointed at the defendant and alleged she had given her a topless massage at age 16.

On a visit to Epstein's New Mexico ranch, Ms Farmer testified that Ms Maxwell "pulled the sheet down and exposed my breasts and started rubbing on my chest and on my upper breasts".

"I was surprised," she said in court. "I wanted so badly to get off of the table."

Ms Farmer said she had a "sense" that Epstein - who she says groped her on three occasions - was nearby watching.

The 12 jurors in federal court in Manhattan began deliberations late on Monday afternoon after three weeks of emotional testimony from four women who accused Ms Maxwell of grooming them for Jeffrey Epstein to abuse. She has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

In a note to US District Judge Alison Nathan shortly after Tuesday’s session began, jurors asked for a portion of a deposition that one of the four alleged victims, Carolyn, gave to the FBI.

The defence, which appeared animated as they gathered around a laptop with Ms Maxwell (wearing an all-black ensemble) would likely have been pleased by the jury’s inquiry.

During the trial, Ms Maxwell’s defence attorney Jeffrey Pagliuca questioned Carolyn about the deposition on cross-examination, asking why her testimony in some instances differed from what she had told law enforcement years earlier.

Ms Maxwell’s attorneys repeatedly accused Carolyn of inconsistencies in the account she gave to government authorities in 2007 during its first investigation of Epstein.

The deposition itself was never entered into evidence as part of the trial, so Judge Nathan said she could not provide them with it. She said they can review the transcript of Carolyn’s testimony about the deposition.


Carolyn’s Case Underlies Sex-Trafficking Charge

Carolyn told the jury she was sexually abused for years by Ms Maxwell’s then-boyfriend Epstein beginning when she was 14 years old after being introduced to the British socialite, 59, at the financier’s Palm Beach home.

Two of the criminal counts in the indictment, sex-trafficking conspiracy and sex-trafficking of a minor, are based on Carolyn’s allegations.

Carolyn’s case underlies the sex-trafficking charge against Ms Maxwell, since she said Ms Maxwell sometimes handed her cash after she gave Epstein erotic massages and sent her gifts from out of state. The sex-trafficking charge carries a maximum prison sentence of 40 years, the heaviest of the six counts.



Heated Back and Forth Between Defence and Prosecution

Earlier in the morning, the jurors also asked the court for copies of the testimony of three of the accusers, including Carolyn, Annie Farmer, and “Jane”, so they could review their accounts, in what could be seen as another positive sign for Ms Maxwell. The British socialite looked relaxed and happy at the morning’s developments, and at one point received a shoulder rub from her attorney Bobbi Sternheim.

However, the jury later came back with a third question on whether they could consider the testimony of Ms Farmer, who claims she was massaged naked by Ms Maxwell, in one of the six charges.

There was a heated back and forth between the defence and prosecution on what the judge should instruct them.

Maurene Comey, for the Government, told the judge: “A one-word answer would be correct here. They asked a very simple ‘yes’ ‘no’ question, the answer is ‘yes’.”

The 59-year-old had hoped to be found not guilty and released before the festive holiday, according to sources close to the British socialite.

But this week, a New York jury failed to reach verdicts on the six charges against her after a third day of deliberations.

Maxwell will now spend her Christmas day void of the sumptuous turkey dinner she is used to with reports of deliberations now resuming next week.

Instead she will be served a choice of hot dogs, burgers or chicken breasts, mac and cheese, corn on the cob and ice cream at the Metropolitan Detention Centre in Brooklyn, where she is being held.

Judge Alison Nathan had asked the panel of six men and six women if they wanted to sit today, to which they replied with a note saying: “No, thank you.”

She told the jury: "Alright. You declined my invitation to deliberate. We will resume Monday at 9am.

"Please stay safe over the long weekend. I need all of you here and healthy on Monday."

Jurors have spent the week pouring over their evidence files.

At one point yesterday they asked to see the testimony again of one of her four accusers.

Maxwell has denied procuring, grooming and abusing underage girls for paedophile and ex-lover Jeffrey Epstein between 1994 and 2004.

She faces up to 80 years in prison if convicted on sex trafficking and perjury charges.

She is said to have recruited and groomed underage girls for him.

Her older brother Ian has said her physical and mental state were “weakened” by being held in jail, including being disturbed by guards shining a torch into her cell every 15 minutes.

She has virtually been in solitary confinement for 18 months at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Centre.

Her family said this made it difficult for her to take the stand in her defence.

Ian, who has been present to support his sister during the trial, argues this is “tantamount to a denial of justice”.

Maxwell’s legal team presented evidence for two days after the prosecution brought forward a series of alleged victims. They claimed she is being used as a scapegoat for Epstein’s crimes, following his death in prison in 2019.

Prosecutors alleged the pair were “partners in crime”. Maxwell denies all the charges against her.

Citing the city's "astronomical spike" in Covid cases, Judge Alison Nathan said she needed them to meet "every day forward until they reach a verdict".

The jury resumed deliberations this week after breaking for Christmas.



Ms Maxwell, 60, has denied grooming underage girls for abuse by the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

If convicted, she could face decades in prison. She has also pleaded not guilty to two charges of perjury, for which she will be tried separately.

Prosecutors have called the former socialite a "sophisticated predator", while her lawyers alleged "sensationalism" around her case in their final statements to jurors.

The judge also asked jurors to stay until 18:00 (23:00 GMT) instead of 17:00 every day.


Addressing the threat posed by New York's rising Covid rate, the judge said: "We now face a higher and escalating risk that the jurors and trial participants may need to quarantine.

"We are simply in a different place regarding the pandemic than we were a week ago."

The jurors were not required to have been vaccinated when they were selected.

The jury had been expecting to have Thursday and Friday off.


Coronavirus cases in New York have soared from an average of about 3,400 a day in the week ending 12 December, to 22,000 in the week ending 26 December, the Associated Press reports.

But defence lawyer Laura Menninger told the judge that any suggestion the jury should stay later was "beginning to sound like urging them to hurry up".

She pointed out that the jury was continuing to request transcripts of trial testimony and other materials that indicated they were working diligently.

Tuesday is the fourth full day of deliberations in the trial as the jury considers six charges against Ms Maxwell, which allege she played a role in Epstein's sexual abuse of teenage girls between 1994 and 2004.

Epstein was found dead in a jail cell in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges.

Ms Maxwell, a socialite and daughter of the late British media tycoon Robert Maxwell, has been held in a US prison without the chance of bail since her arrest in July 2020.

There's a real lull in the main and overflow courtrooms during jury deliberations. Journalists and others pass numerous hours each day reading books, making polite conversation or exchanging thoughts on the jury's questions.

That calm is easily shattered when the prosecution, defence and the judge all file into the courtroom. It's most often because the jury has sent a note. In that moment, an adrenaline-induced one, there's the possibility that it will indicate they've reached a verdict.

After four full days, the notes so far have been questions or requests for transcripts of testimonies and supplies. It's impossible to know how deliberations are going by those small insights.

Still, that doesn't stop one's mind from trying to read into what they're thinking. It's obvious Ghislaine Maxwell is doing the same thing. She has quickly consulted her lawyers or visibly reacted to some notes.

The Manhattan federal jury delivered the verdict after six days of deliberations. The decision arrived four days after Christmas, which also marks the socialite’s 60th birthday.

From the 1990s and onward, Maxwell’s romance, and later her close companionship, with the multimillionaire Epstein made headlines, particularly in the British tabloids which knew her as the youngest daughter of disgraced British media baron Robert Maxwell.

Those ties would be her undoing decades later when Epstein was arrested by the FBI in July 2019 for preying on scores of underage girls.

After Epstein, 66, killed himself in a Manhattan federal lockup while awaiting trial that August, federal prosecutors targeted Maxwell as their next defendant in the money-manager’s international sex-trafficking operation. While Maxwell has adamantly denied any involvement in Epstein’s sexual pyramid scheme—which involved the late financier molesting scores of girls during paid “massages” at his homes in Florida, New York and beyond—she has been hounded for years by accusers’ claims that she aided his perverted scheme.

Maxwell’s arrest last year—at a secret compound in New Hampshire where she’d holed up with her much-younger tech CEO husband—marked another scandalous chapter in the Maxwell family history. After Robert Maxwell mysteriously and fatally tumbled off his yacht, the Lady Ghislaine, his Daily Mirror employees discovered he had pillaged hundreds of millions of dollars from their pension funds. Maxwell’s sons Ian and Kevin—who were present for closing arguments in Ghislaine’s trial—were charged in connection to their father’s scheme. Then in their late 30s, the Maxwell brothers were acquitted after an eight-month trial.

Maxwell was convicted of five charges: conspiracy to entice a minor to travel to engage in illegal sex acts; transporting a minor with the intent to engage in criminal sexual activity; conspiracy to transport a minor with the intent to engage in criminal sexual activity; sex trafficking conspiracy; and child sex trafficking.

The jury found her not guilty of a sixth charge: enticing a minor to travel to engage in illegal sex acts.


While the Maxwells palled around with British high society, prosecutors say Ghislaine Maxwell helped Epstein prey in secret on poor and vulnerable teenagers. Four victims testified against Maxwell over the course of the prosecution’s case, which lasted two weeks. “Jane,” a TV actress, claimed Maxwell and Epstein first recruited her at Michigan's prestigious Interlcohen arts summer camp in 1994 when she was 14. The couple abused her, she said, and involved her in group sex with adult women.

“Kate,” who was 17 and living in England when she met Maxwell in 1994, told jurors that the socialite encouraged her to give Epstein sexualized massages and directed her to wear a schoolgirl uniform during one encounter with the wealthy pervert. Some of the abuse, Kate said, took place at Maxwell's London townhouse.

Carolyn, who was 14 when she met Maxwell in 2001, said the cosmopolitan arranged her “massage” appointments with Epstein and invited her to the U.S. Virgin Islands. She told Maxwell she “couldn’t travel because I couldn’t get a passport because I was too young” and that her mother would never let her go. Carolyn alleged Maxwell groped her and told her she “had a great body for Mr. Epstein and his friends.”

Annie Farmer, who testified under her full name, detailed how Maxwell and Epstein preyed on her during a weekend trip to New Mexico in 1996. Then 16 and alone with the couple at Epstein’s ranch, Farmer was instructed to give Epstein a foot massage. Afterward, Maxwell offered to give Farmer a body massage, during which the socialite unexpectedly groped her breast. She testified that she was fearful, because knew she was “very isolated” on the remote property, and that she “just needed to get through this.”

“As a 16-year-old, when I experienced abuse at the hands of Epstein and Maxwell, I did not have a framework for understanding what happened to me. I had never heard the word grooming,” she added.

After the jury announced its verdict, Farmer wrote in a statement, “I am so relieved and grateful that the jury recognized the pattern of predatory behavior that Maxwell engaged in for years. She has caused hurt to many more women than the few of us who had the chance to testify in the courtroom. I hope that this verdict brings solace to all who need it and demonstrates that no one is above the law. Even those with great power and privilege will be held accountable when they sexually abuse and exploit the young.”

Prosecutors wrapped up the case sooner than expected, calling 24 witnesses in 10 days including two former pilots for Epstein, his ex-butler, FBI analysts, a forensic psychologist and former boyfriends of two victims to support their claims. For its part, the defense called eight witnesses over two days including Epstein’s ex-girlfriend and longtime confidante, former Miss Sweden Eva Andersson-Dubin, and “false memory” expert Elizabeth Loftus, a favorite of prominent defendants including Robert Durst, Harvey Weinstein and O.J. Simpson. Loftus testified that victims' memories can be corrupted or even implanted. Maxwell decided not to testify in her own defense, telling the judge: “Your Honor, the government has not proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt, and so there is no need for me to testify.”

At the time of Epstein’s arrest and suicide, Maxwell was living far away from the New York social scene as a suburban stepmom and oceans activist in Massachusetts. They also highlighted the victims’ million-dollar settlements with the Epstein Victims’ Compensation Program—Jane, for example, received $5 million, more than half of which went to attorney’s fees and court costs—saying that cooperating with the government only enhanced the women’s claims with the fund.

Defense lawyers also worked to introduce doubt by naming other adult women in Epstein’s world, including alleged co-conspirator Sarah Kellen, and suggesting the financier was dating multiple other people behind Maxwell’s back.

“We are not here to defend Jeffrey Epstein, he is not my client,” attorney Laura Menninger said in closing arguments on Monday. “The government played you a montage of Epstein's houses, his bank accounts, his artwork, his cars, his planes, his helicopters, his bank accounts, his message pads, just like a sensationalist tabloid would.”

“As we have said from the beginning,” Menninger later added, “Ghislaine Maxwell is not Jeffrey Epstein. She’s being tried here for being with Jeffrey Epstein. Maybe that was the biggest mistake of her life, but it was not a crime.”

But in a fervent rebuttal, assistant U.S. Attorney Maureen Comey said, “The defense just spent a whole lot of energy trying to get you to think about anyone other than the defendant, trying to get you to look away from the massive amount of evidence…”

“The defense tried to suggest that even if Jeffrey Epstein did engage in sexual contact with Jane, Kate, Carolyn, and Annie, Maxwell didn’t know about it,” Comey added. “She just had no idea that her boyfriend and best friend for more than a decade had a thing for teenage girls. Ladies and gentlemen, that suggestion is borderline laughable.”

“Of course she knew,” the prosecutor said. “The defendant ran every aspect of Jeffrey Epstein’s life for the better part of a decade.”

Comey later underscored the class divide between Maxwell and Epstein’s young victims (and even Epstein’s household staff), a reality which permeated much of the trial testimony. Maxwell “never thought that those teenage girls would have the strength to report what happened to them,” Comey said. “In her eyes, they were just trash, beneath her.”

Still, one of Epstein’s most high-profile victims didn’t testify, despite her name haunting the proceedings and her teenage photograph being presented to the jury.

Virginia Roberts Giuffre has long accused Maxwell of being Epstein’s chief accomplice. Giuffre first identified Maxwell as a procurer of underage girls in a 2009 lawsuit filed after Epstein’s controversial plea deal in Florida for soliciting a minor. The complaint, filed under the pseudonym Jane Doe 102, alleged Maxwell recruited her one day at Mar-a-Lago, where the teen worked as a changing room assistant. Giuffre claimed she went to Epstein’s Palm Beach mansion later that day and Epstein and Maxwell sexually assaulted her. “At the end of this sexually exploitive abuse, [Epstein] and Ms. Maxwell giddily told [her] to return the following day and told her she had ‘lots of potential,’” the suit alleged.

Giuffre came forward again when two other victims sued the Department of Justice over Epstein’s non-prosecution agreement. “One way to describe Maxwell’s role was as the ‘madame.’ She assumed a position of trust for all the girls, including me,” Giuffre said in a 2015 affidavit, in which she was anonymous. She added, “It turned out that Maxwell was all about sex all the time. She had sex with underage girls virtually every day when I was around her, and she was very forceful.”

Ransome claimed Epstein and Maxwell “intimidated, threatened, humiliated and verbally abused [her] in order to coerce her into sexual compliance.” (Ransome’s case was settled one year later.)

After the Miami Herald published its three-part expose into Epstein’s lenient plea deal in 2018, the feds began a new investigation into his sex crimes.

Palm Beach police first targeted Epstein in 2005, after the stepmother of a teenage girl contacted them about a 45-year-old man molesting the child. The investigation revealed Epstein was abusing and raping teen girls he’d hired to give him massages and also paying girls to bring more victims to his mansion. The importance of the failure of the Florida case cannot be overstated.

“Law school professors should teach this case in legal ethics courses as examples of how not to treat victims of sex crimes and as a forewarning to prosecutors on how they can be influenced to fail in their duties to both victims and the public.”

Victims’ hopes for justice were shattered when Epstein, newly charged in New York, died before he could even face a jury.

But as she took the stand, Carolyn said it was Giuffre who introduced her to Epstein and Maxwell at his Palm Beach mansion in the early 2000s. Her then-boyfriend knew Giuffre, which was how they met.

"Virginia asked me if I wanted to come make money," Carolyn said in court, later testifying Giuffre was 18 at the time.

"Did Virginia tell you what you had to do to make that money?" prosecutor Maurene Comey asked.

"Not right away," Carolyn said.

In her lawsuit against the Duke, Giuffre claims she was sex trafficked to Andrew on three occasions by Epstein, the first time when she was 17 in London.

The Prince, a close pal of Maxwell, has consistently and vehemently denied her claims.




In seeking to turn the tables on Giuffre, his US lawyer Andrew Brettler claims she was involved in the "wilful recruitment and trafficking of young girls for sexual abuse".

The court papers quote Crystal Figueroa, the sister of one of Giuffre's ex-boyfriends, who claims Andrew's accuser asked her for help.

"[Giuffre] would say to me, 'Do you know any girls who are kind of slutty?'" Crystal said.

Brettler's court filing adds: "It is a striking feature of this case that while lurid allegations are made against Prince Andrew by Giuffre, the only party to this claim whose conduct has involved the wilful recruitment and trafficking of young girls for sexual abuse is Giuffre herself, including while she was an adult."


Carolyn may not be the only Maxwell prosecution witness used by the US Government to convict Maxwell.


They are also considering calling Juan Alessi, Epstein's former butler at his Palm Beach mansion in Florida.

The 72-year-old has previously spoken about Andrew once telling the Mirror/Express/Star he never saw the Duke with Giuffre.

In a previous civil case, Mr Alessi swore on oath how he set up massage tables for the Prince daily during an extended stay in the early noughties.

"Prince Andrew spent weeks with us," he said "[He would sleep] in the main room, the main guest bedroom. That was the blue room."

Asked whether the royal frequently had massages, Mr Alessi said: "I would say daily massages.

"I can't remember if he had more than one [a day], but I think it was just a massage for him. We set up the tables."

He later told the Mirror he remembered Andrew well, although never witnessed him take part in any of the sexual impropriety claimed against the royal.

"I met Prince Andrew twice at the house of Epstein," he said.

"The only thing I can say about him was that he was a complete gentleman. He was a nice guy. I never see him with girls. I never see him with Virginia Roberts (now Giuffre).

"I never saw him naked or actually having the massage. If he had a massage, like I say in my deposition, everything was upstairs behind closed doors."

Andrew's team have also centred upon why Giuffre, now 38, was not called by the prosecution during the Maxwell trial, given her knowledge of Epstein and his British 'madam'.

Judge Alison Nathan was told she was "available" to give evidence, yet neither side called the mum-of-three as a witness.

The prosecution did not explain why it had not done so, although Andrew's team believe they feared inconsistencies that have emerged over the years in her well-publicised story might not have been helpful.

Since instructing Hollywood lawyer Brettler, the Duke, 61, has taken a much more aggressive approach to have Giuffre's case against him dismissed.

Giuffre has used New York's Child Victims Act (CVA) that allowed those abused to sue their attackers.

She is pursuing the Duke for unspecified damages, alleging he sexually abused her on three separate occasions in 2001 when she was 17.

Giuffre claims she was trafficked to London, where she was forced to sleep with the Duke while she was a 'teen sex slave' of his then friend, Epstein.

In 2019, New York lawmakers introduced a "look-back window" in the Child Victims Act that raised the deadline to 55 years of age, giving victims of decades-old abuse two years to file civil claims by August 14, 2021.

Mum-of-three Giuffre filed the lawsuit on August 9, five days before the window closed.


In her lawsuit, she says of the royal: "Prince Andrew's actions constitute sexual offences as defined in New York Penal Law Article 130, including but not limited to sexual misconduct as defined in Article 130.20, rape in the third degree as defined in Article 130.25, rape in the first degree as defined in Article 130.35."


This week, the Duke made a further attempt to have the case dismissed, arguing as Giuffre lives in Australia and he in the UK, the US has no jurisdiction over both parties.

It came after the Prince earlier this month launched another aggressive legal bid to have the lawsuit thrown out, calling it "unintelligible" and deliberately vague.

The royal went further in his motion to have the case dismissed, arguing the law that allowed her to sue in America was "unconstitutional".

His legal team argued he is prevented from being sued under a 2009 financial deal Giuffre made with Jeffrey Epstein, which barred her from pursuing the financier's associates.

Paedophile Ghislaine Maxwell’s list of more than 300 British associates is to be reviewed after US prosecutors vowed to pursue all those involved in her “pyramid scheme of abuse”.



The names contained in the ‘little black book’ she built with her sex offender lover Jeffrey Epstein include some of the UK’s highest-profile people, including their pal Prince Andrew.

There is no allegation of wrongdoing against those detailed in the directory, with the FBI seeing them as potential witnesses “unless the evidence leads them elsewhere”.

A source told the Mirror: “Whereas Epstein brought the cash, Maxwell brought the contacts.

“She opened up a world to her then-lover he could only have dreamt of.

“Epstein was socially awkward. Some say inept. He didn’t mix well.

“But with Maxwell by his side, she gave him cover and credibility with the rich and famous.

“He was accepted into their world not because of money but because of her.

“She provided most of the numbers in their book.

“Prosecutors in the US have made countless mistakes before where Maxwell and Epstein are concerned. Christopher Wray, the director of the FBI, has vowed that those who committed a crime with them will not escape justice under his watch.”

During Maxwell’s four-week trial in New York, the book including the names and addresses of nearly 2,000 world leaders, sportsmen, royalty, celebrities and alleged victims remained secret.

The contacts contained within it allowed Maxwell and Epstein to flourish in the world’s most elite circles.

For decades, important, influential, serious people attended their dinner parties, rode his private ‘Lolita Express’ jet, and furthered the fiction they were New York’s power couple.

During her trial, however, the disgraced socialite’s defence attorneys agreed with prosecutors not to release the 97-page directory to the public.

But it was made available in a previous civil case involving Andrew’s rape accuser Virginia Giuffre. The book was filled with contact details of Maxwell and Epstein’s famous friends, including the Duke and former U.S. leader Bill Clinton and Donald Trump but was only mentioned sporadically during her sex-trafficking trial.

Both former Presidents and the Prince, as well as others mentioned in the directory, have denied all accusations they were involved in any alleged sexual abuse.

Following Maxwell’s conviction on Wednesday, US Attorney Damian Williams made particular reference to “powerful and well connected”, saying his team would not stop until all those guilty of an offence had been brought before a court.

“This Office will always stand with victims, will always follow the facts wherever they lead, and will always fight to ensure that no one, no matter how powerful and well connected, is above the law,” he said.

Some legal experts believe Maxwell, who faces up to 65 years in prison when sentenced early next year, think she may begin naming names in a deal to reduce her time behind bars.

However, victims have told their lawyers they will be furious if such an agreement is brokered as they want her to serve the maximum time possible.

Previously the FBI compiled a 2,000-page dossier on Andrew’s pals Epstein and Maxwell.


The so-called little black book contained 301 Brits listing more than 1,000 numbers and dozens of email addresses between them.

They included countless celebrities including Mick Jagger, Simon Le Bon, Phil Collins, the late Sir David Frost, Richard Branson, Naomi Campbell, Tamara Beckwith, Jonathan Dimbleby, Lloyd Grossman and numerous lords and ladies.

Ex-British Prime Minister Tony Blair is recorded once, while his former cabinet minister Lord Peter Mandelson has ten numbers, including one marked ‘direct line’, one marked ‘home’ and one marked ‘country home’.

Princess Diana’s brother, Charles Spencer, also features.

There are 16 separate phone numbers for Prince Andrew, including a mobile phone number, one marked Palace ex-directory, one for Balmoral, the Queen’s private retreat in Scotland where the Prince invited Epstein, and one marked Sand, which appears to be Sandringham, the other royal retreat where he spent time.

Details of the book came out in court documents through litigation from Virginia Giuffre against Maxwell during their civil libel case although it had been published in the media prior to that.


Epstein also recorded 18 numbers for Sarah Ferguson, who took £15,000 off the paedophile to help pay off her debts.

Other global names included Woody Allen, Alec Baldwin, magician David Blaine, Bill Cosby, Rupert Murdoch and singer Courtney Love.


There is no suggestion the presence of the names means that any of those in the book are accused of any form of wrongdoing or have met Maxwell, 60, and Epstein in person.

One Brit named in the directory during Maxwell’s trial case was identified as taking part in ‘sexualised massages’ involving underage girls at Epstein’s Florida mansion- but there has been no suggestion they are one of the celebrities or politicians named.

A witness testifying using the pseudonym Jane told how Maxwell and Epstein abused her from the age of 14.

She said she was forced to participate in a series of 'sexualised massages' involving adults, named 'Emmy' as one of the participants.

Laura Menninger, Maxwell’s lawyer, asked Jane about the Brit: “You said that Emmy was British and that she was nice and cool. She was involved in the group massages with you? She was involved with the sexual contact?’

“Yes,” Jane replied.

Fears over Maxwell and Epstein’s offending overseas led US officials to explore their hundreds of ties to the UK, including Andrew.

Maxwell’s conviction poured more pressure on the Duke to speak with the FBI after they claimed he had previously refused to.

Since discussing his alleged silence, Giuffre has issued proceedings against the Duke, 61, accusing him of sexual abuse and rape.

She filed a lawsuit in New York and is seeking unspecified damages.

In August, Giuffre, 38, sued father-of-two Andrew, saying she was forced to have sex with him at Maxwell’s London home.

She also claims he abused her at the billionaire’s homes in Manhattan and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Andrew, Queen Elizabeth’s second son, has “unequivocally” denied Giuffre’s claims and accused her of seeking “another payday” in her drive to profit from her association with Epstein, who she says also abused her.

Andrew’s lawyers are scheduled to argue for a dismissal of Giuffre’s lawsuit on Tuesday, before U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan in Manhattan.

Ms Giuffre's representatives say there is "no logic or authority for such a provision".

It comes following the conviction of his pal Ghislaine Maxwell, who was last night found guilty of five out of six charges of sex trafficking at her New York trial.

She could face more than 60 years behind bars, but sparked speculation she could name names in a bid to reduce her sentence.

Maxwell was spotted talking to a TV producer in court.


The Queen's second son is attempting to get Ms Giuffre's civil case thrown out, claiming that his accuser cannot bring the action against him because she is not a US resident.

Ms Giuffre, now 38, claims she was trafficked to London where she claims she was forced to sleep with the Duke while she was a 'teen sex slave' of paedophile Jeffrey Epstein, who was then a close friend of Andrew.

The royal vehemently denies the allegations.

Attorney Linda Bloom, who represents several of Epstein's victims, said the Maxwell verdict should cause alarm for the Duke's camp.

She told DailyMail.com: "He should be quaking in his boots.

"Because this shows that a jury is willing to come back with a guilty verdict even if the accusers are not perfect, as no human being is."

Ms Giuffre's civil case will be heard in front of a jury.


Ms Bloom pointed out that Andrew has previously said he was closer to Maxwell than to Epstein, and added that the former's conviction "just brings us one step closer to Prince Andrew".

This week Maxwell was seen talking to a producer from ABC News in the New York courtroom, sparking speculation that she might be willing to point the finger at others involved in her and Epstein's sick world.

"If she does, there could be a lot of rich, powerful & famous people sweating tonight... and not sweating."

Andrew's appeal to get the civil case - in which Ms Giuffre is seeking unspecified damages - thrown out will be heard in New York next week.


A letter sent by Ms Giuffre's representative Sigrid McCawley to the Duke's lead council Andrew Brettler, reveals the unusual request for statements to be kept secret, The Telegraph reports.

It is unclear how much of the witness testimony Andrew's team are seeking to be sealed.


In the letter, dated Christmas Eve, Ms McCawley wrote: “The main substantive disagreement in the parties’ drafts is your inclusion of an unprecedented paragraph, which would allow you to keep deposition materials sealed from the public even if neither party designates the underlying testimony as confidential.”

Ms McCawley said there was “no logic or authority for such a provision” - adding that Andrew's team had left it too late to ask for a confidentiality order.

A source close to the Duke told The Mirror: “Such a request or offer to keep things confidential is certainly not unprecedented, rather it would be considered standard practice in any high profile case.

"However, it seems like Ms Giuffre and her lawyers want to try this case in the media instead of a court room.....”

On Tuesday next week Judge Lewis Kaplan will hear the Duke's argument to dismiss the case.

But even if he succeeds, Ms McCawley said, the matter will not go away, as her client would re-file her civil action.

“The parties in this action will need to resolve this dispute one way or another,” she said.

Earlier this week it emerged that the Duke's representatives had called or the case to be halted, claiming Ms Giuffre is not a US resident - meaning she could not make the claim under a federal law court.

Ms McCawley called that argument “another in a series of tired attempts by Prince Andrew to duck and dodge the legal merits of the serious case Virginia Giuffre has brought.”

A butler who helped to convict Ghislaine Maxwell has urged her pal Prince Andrew to speak to the FBI, as a lawyer said the Duke should be “quaking in his boots”.

“He should be quaking in his boots,” Ms Bloom said. “This shows that a jury is willing to come back with a guilty verdict even if the accusers are not perfect, as no human being is.”


Maxwell, 60, was convicted of five counts of sex trafficking, grooming and abusing minors with Epstein.

She faces a maximum sentence of 65 years in prison when she is sentenced early next year.

Shortly after the verdict, her family said they would launch an appeal.

Earlier she had spoken to a producer from US channel ABC in the courtroom, prompting speculation that she may soon name names.

Mr Alessi recalled Andrew visiting Epstein’s mansion in Palm Beach, Florida, twice but said he never witnessed him take part in any sexual impropriety. He said Maxwell and Epstein were both there.

He said:

“I never saw him kissing anybody. I never saw him patting anybody.”


Mr Alessi, who has claimed he saw naked girls by the pool when Andrew stayed, said Epstein’s house was “full” of nude pictures of young women.

Asked whether the Prince would have seen them, he replied: “You would need to be blind not to see them. Pictures of young girls, objects and ornaments all over the house.”

Mr Alessi revealed that he spoke to the FBI and police about Maxwell decades before her conviction but she was not arrested at the time.

He said he had driven Maxwell to Donald Trump ’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach the time she first picked up teenage Ms Giuffre, who was then a worker there.


Mr Alessi said of Maxwell: “She was terrible. She was the devil. She was a terrible person. The way she treated people. She absolutely knew what Epstein was doing. She was the one who was finding the girls for him.

“One time she had me drive her to Mar-a-Lago looking for girls, and that is when she found Virginia.

“The whole day she spent recruiting girls. I was the one driving.

“I would drive the car, go to this massage parlour. She [Maxwell] would go in, take the cards. Business cards. It was strange because she was procuring women for this guy.

“I only saw two young girls in [Epstein’s] house – Virginia and a girl who went on to become an actress.

“That’s the only two underage girls, and why did I know they were underage? Because I had to go to school to pick them up. He would say ‘pick them up’.”

The actress that Mr Alessi refers to gave evidence at Maxwell’s trial under the pseudonym Jane.

Mr Alessi testified that he had first met her in 1994, saying: “She appeared to be young. I would say 14, 15.”


Like Ms Giuffre, he would pay her $200 each time she visited Epstein’s home for, unknown to him, sexualised massages. He said: “I used to withdraw $10,000 and pay the girls in cash. It was all documented.”


Recalling when he first met Ms Giuffre, he said: “As far as I know, she was having a massage.

“She never said, ‘Juan, I wish I would have told you as I know you would have done something.’

“I am a father. I would have punched the s*** out of this guy, who was a lot younger than me.

“I would have said, ‘f*** you, I’m leaving. I’m going to the police.’”

At Maxwell’s trial, the jury was shown excerpts from a 58-page booklet titled Household Manual, that she had created for staff.

“You see nothing, hear nothing, say nothing except to answer a question direct to you,” one section of the booklet read. “Respect their privacy.”

Mr Alessi testified that he had taken the instructions as “a kind of warning”.


He recalled: “After Ghislaine came into the picture, everything changed.

“[Epstein] had been the nicest guy around. He would come in and talk to me, talk to me about soccer. She changed him.

“She is very well connected. He was nasty because of her.


“She would call me and say ‘you are not allowed to talk to any of the guests, any of the girls. You are not allowed to get in any conversation. You are not allowed to talk to this girl who comes to the house, President Trump, a Senator or politician, celebrity’. They all knew me by my name. She treated me like s*** from day one.”

Ms Giuffre met an August 14 deadline to use New York’s Child Victims Act – which allowed people to file civil claims against alleged abusers – to sue Prince Andrew.

Earlier this week the Prince’s legal team argued the US court had no jurisdiction over the royal or his accuser as both lived outside of the US.

The Duke of York's lawyers wanted Jeffrey Epstein's alleged 'teen sex slave' Virginia Giuffre to sit for a two-hour deposition to discuss where she was 'domiciled’ as she now lives in Perth, Australia.

However, District Judge Lewis Kaplan threw out the attempt saying the case could continue.

Faced with profound human wickedness, the most basic question of all is the one we rarely ask

The Ghislaine Maxwell case raises so many questions, and yet scarcely discussed is the one that perhaps matters most.



Naturally, there’s huge interest in whether Maxwell, convicted this week of recruiting and grooming teenage girls for sex with her one-time boyfriend Jeffrey Epstein, will seek to reduce her sentence by naming names – opening up the pair’s notorious little black book and telling prosecutors who else among the rich and powerful abused the vulnerable minors Maxwell trafficked for sex.


In Britain, much of that interest focuses on Epstein’s longtime pal, Prince Andrew, who was so close to the couple he invited them on visits to Balmoral, Sandringham and Windsor: it’s lucky the prince doesn’t sweat, because if he did, he might be drenched now.

So far he has refused to answer US investigators’ questions – not for his own sake, you understand, but according to multiple reports, to save the Queen from embarrassment. Because a 61-year-old man hiding behind his 95-year-old mother would not be in the least bit mortifying.

There are other questions, such as: how many others enabled the travelling child abuse ring that Epstein and Maxwell operated, turning a blind eye to what was surely obvious?


OR: when else would the BBC respond to the conviction of a child sex offender by interviewing a brother of the offender who refused to accept the verdict of the court? And how come that Today programme interview with Ian Maxwell came so soon after the BBC had given a platform to one of Epstein’s lawyers, presenting him as if he were merely a neutral expert?

All those questions matter, and yet the one that preys on my mind is more timeless. It’s the question that arises in all such cases of human cruelty yet which one hesitates to ask, lest the inquiry seem naive: why?

The coverage of Maxwell has probed that a bit, suggesting for example that Ghislaine Maxwell was conditioned, as the daughter of the publishing magnate Robert Maxwell, to cater to the whims of a monstrous man, and simply transferred her allegiance, and her service, from one monster to another.

Growing up surrounded by wealth and power, where the deference of officialdom was taken for granted, would have had its effect too. Ghislaine Maxwell may well have assumed that people like her and Epstein were granted a special kind of impunity, that they could break the laws that restrained the appetites of lesser mortals, because for most of her life that had indeed been the case.

And yet, both those answers are unsatisfying as explanations. There are plenty of abusers who did not grow up with either a Maxwell-style father or Maxwell-level wealth and, conversely, there are people whose upbringings were comparable to Ghislaine Maxwell’s but who did not go on to commit terrible crimes.

So the why question lingers, just as it did in sharper and more horrific form at least twice in the last month alone. December 2021 began with convictions for the father and stepmother of Arthur Labinjo-Hughes in a case so appalling, I confess at the time I could barely read accounts of it. The six-year-old was subjected to a regime of sustained torture which was, incredibly, filmed by those who inflicted it.

The little boy was made to stand in isolation for up to 14 hours at a time, without anything to eat or drink. He was beaten. To punish him, his father took the football shirts he loved and cut them to shreds in front of him. Perhaps most unbearable of all, the jury was shown footage of a weak and frail Arthur shortly before his death saying: “No one loves me. No one is going to feed me.”

When the man and woman guilty of destroying Arthur’s brief life were found guilty, there was revulsion, of course – and on Friday their sentences were referred to the court of appeal for being too lenient – but the public conversation moved without pause for breath to the policy implications.


There was intense debate about the state of children’s services, about the damage done by austerity, about target-driven culture, about the recruitment and retention of social workers and so on. But what was missing was a much less sophisticated question.


Why would two people do such terrible things to a defenceless child? How could a father cause such pain to his own flesh and blood?


There was a similar reflex 11 days later, following the verdicts in the equally soul-draining case of Star Hobson, a child, a baby really, who died at just 16 months, having been punched to death by her mother’s partner as her mother did nothing to save her.


Once again, the pair filmed their months of cruelty against the little girl, apparently finding the videos amusing enough to send to friends. And yet the immediate talk was not of how two people could do such a thing, but of a local “child safeguarding practice review” and whether control of children’s services should belong with the local council or the Department for Education.

I understand the impulse to concentrate on these institutional, bureaucratic issues. The assumption is that there will always be people capable of horrendous brutality, that that fact will never change, and so the sensible focus of our attention should be on prevention. I get that.

And yet the sheer speed with which we move to technocratic answers, barely even asking the harder human questions, begins to look like displacement activity. It’s as if we can’t bring ourselves to contemplate the puzzle of what humans are capable of, because we have no idea what we’d say.

Earlier, God-fearing generations did not find this so difficult. Nor do those who still have traditional faith. They have recourse to a vocabulary that includes the notion of evil and wickedness and that allows them to talk about it. But those words don’t trip so easily off the secular tongue.

Instead, we look for explanations in psychology or economics, assuming, to adapt Stephen Sondheim’s lyric, that if people are depraved it’s because they’re deprived, whether of love or money. That view persists.


There was an echo of it in the closing argument from Maxwell’s defence lawyer, when she asked “why an Oxford-educated, proper English woman would suddenly agree to facilitate sex abuse of minors”. Only the poor or poorly educated behave badly.

We can see the flaw in such reasoning, even before you get to the insult it delivers to all those who endured great privation, emotional or material, without becoming abusers. And yet, the absence of easy answers does not give us a licence to stop asking hard questions.


We need to be able to stare wicked acts and evil deeds in the face, rather than to comfort ourselves that they exist solely as functions of failed systems, errors that could be eliminated given the right policy tweak.


This need not be a bleak endeavour. I think of Julie K Brown, the Miami Herald reporter without whose fearless pursuit of Epstein’s crimes this week’s reckoning might never have come.

I think of the courage of the victims, who kept up the fight for justice at great cost. Unfathomable evil is part of the human story, but so too is unimaginable good.

US Judge Delivers Double Setback to Prince Andrew’s Abuse Case Battle

Two of Prince Andrew’s efforts to prevent or stall the progression of Virginia Roberts Giuffre’s sex assault lawsuit against him were blocked on Saturday when a US federal judge ordered the prince’s lawyers to turn over key legal documents, increasing pressure to settle claims before a crucial court hearing this week.



Judge Lewis A Kaplan, in a written order, told the prince’s lawyers they must turn over documents on the schedule that has been set in the lawsuit brought by Guiffre who claims she was abused – aged 17 – by the prince on multiple occasions in 2001 while she was being sexually abused by financier Jeffrey Epstein.

Kaplan also rejected arguments by the prince’s lawyer, Andrew Brettler, on jurisdiction grounds after they argued last week that the lawsuit should be dismissed because Giuffre, a US citizen, no longer lives in the US. Brettler has called the lawsuit “baseless”.

The prince’s lawyers claimed evidence was so strong that Giuffre does not reside in the US that it was pointless to exchange evidence until that question is resolved because it could result in the lawsuit’s dismissal.

They argued that Giuffre has lived in Australia for all but two of the past 19 years, has an Australian driver’s licence and lives in a $1.9m (£1.4m) home in Perth, Western Australia, where she and her husband, an Australian national, live with their three children.

In a statement, Giuffre’s attorney, Sigrid McCawley, called the request to halt the case “just another in a series of tired attempts by Prince Andrew to duck and dodge the legal merits of the case Virginia Giuffre has brought against him. All parties in litigation are subject to discovery and Prince Andrew is no exception.”

Judge Kaplan, in a written order on Friday, noted the prince’s lawyers have requested that “extensive” materials be turned over by Giuffre by 14 January, including documents related to where she has lived.

The rulings come before an important case hearing in New York on Tuesday, one day after the scheduled public release on Monday of a 2009 settlement agreement between Epstein and Giuffre that lawyers for Andrew had hoped would protect him from Guiffre’s claims.

The developments follow revelations that Giuffre’s lawyers are reportedly claiming they have up to six witnesses linking the duke to his accuser on the eve of the hearing into a civil lawsuit filed by the 38-year-old, in which she accuses Prince Andrew of sexual assault.


In a separate development, Andrew’s lawyers are also reported to have not provided documentary evidence that he has the “inability to sweat”, despite the claim supporting his denial against allegations he had sex with Giuffre.

The duke is also said not to have so far named any witnesses to support his alibi that he was in Pizza Express in Woking on the night in 2001 he was accused of having sex with Giuffre.

The developments intensify Andrew’s predicament as he faces intense pressure over his friendship with Ghislaine Maxwell.

Last Thursday Maxwell, 60, was found guilty of recruiting and trafficking young girls to be sexually abused by Epstein.

The verdict, which has no direct bearing on the Giuffre civil action, could increase public pressure for further prosecutions and push men in Epstein and Maxwell’s orbit to settle actions against them.

“As to whether Prince Andrew is in greater jeopardy in terms of the civil suit now being stronger there could be some pressure on the court because the public wants to know why the users of these young girls were not held accountable,” former sex crimes prosecutor Wendy Murphy told the Observer.

“The public wants a pound of flesh from the rapists – not just the pimps – but the civil suit is all about money and when the right numbers are paid the case will go away, assuming it survives the jurisdictional challenges,” Murphy added.

But the duke was not named during the Maxwell proceedings and his lawyers are likely to seize on testimony from the key witness “Carolyn”, who said it was Giuffre who introduced her to Epstein and Maxwell.

Separately, it is reported that Giuffre could be permitted to deliver a victim impact statement at Maxwell’s sentencing. Sigrid McCawley, a lawyer for Giuffre, told the Telegraph on Saturday that she anticipates the court will hear from “many, many other women who were not able to be heard at the trial”.

At the same time, government prosecutors have made no indication since Maxwell’s conviction that they intend to prosecute further, either other members of Epstein’s staff or alleged customers of the Epstein-Maxwell sex trafficking conspiracy. Instead, they have given signs that they are closing the book.

Last week, prosecutors dropped charges against the two detention guards who failed to check on Epstein the night of his suicide. Lawyers representing Epstein’s former PA Lesley Groff, named in Epstein’s 2007 non-prosecution agreement, have said they have been informed that no criminal charges will be brought against their client.

On Saturday, it was revealed that David Boies, lawyer for Giuffre, said Maxwell should have “cut a deal”, a decision that indicates she could have become a state witness in a wider investigation into the elite social circle of Epstein, her ex-boyfriend.

Boies told the Times: “She could have cut a very good deal early on but she passed up that opportunity. I think that’s proven to be a fatal mistake.”

Giuffre’s legal team have made requests for new information in readiness for a possible longer hearing, including proof of his claim during his infamous Newsnight interview that he cannot sweat.

Giuffre had stated that the prince was “sweating profusely all over me” at a London club on a night she alleges they had sex. The duke told Newsnight that her account could not be true “because I have a peculiar medical condition which is that I don’t sweat or I didn’t sweat at the time”.

He also said that on the day in question he had taken his daughter Beatrice to a children’s party at Pizza Express in the late afternoon and was at home with his children for the rest of the night.

As pressure mounts on the duke, he may be gambling on three outcomes – that the Giuffre case is thrown out after jurisdictional or other challenges, that it fails on its own merits, or that he may never have to pay the price if a judgment is made against him.

“International proceedings have so much political content. They may be couched in legal terms, but when you are trying to do something internationally, it’s always political,” Murphy says. “You can say I’ve got a judgement and I’d like it enforced, but for political reasons a foreign country can say that’s nice but we don’t intend to do anything about it. Why would we?”

Angry Anthony Figueroa claims Virginia Giuffre told him about her alleged abuse at the hands of the Duke of York 20 years ago when they were in a relationship.

He says she was “scared” by what Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell wanted her to do with the prince. And he claims the former sex slave admitted she “didn’t want to do it”.

Anthony, 39, told us Virginia – then just 17 – was also repeatedly forced to have sex with Andrew’s evil pal Ghislaine, now facing life in jail for trafficking girls, while Epstein watched.

Now a restaurant worker in Atlanta, Georgia, Anthony said of the FBI’s failed attempts to question him: “Being royal makes no difference. Andrew has to face up to the case.

“I remember the first time Virginia mentioned him in 2001. She knew she’d be meeting him and said she knew what they wanted her to do with him and she didn’t want to do it.

“She said she was scared and nervous. I told her she had to do whatever it took to feel safe.”

Anthony was in a relationship with her at the time she alleges Andrew had sex with her on three occasions.

He claims the fallout from her meeting him ultimately destroyed their relationship.

Anthony says she’d leave for up to two weeks a month for flights on Epstein’s “Lolita Express” jet to locations including his Little St James, known as “Paedo Island”.

He says he also visited Epstein’s old “house of horrors” mansion in Palm Beach where he met girls he believed were controlled by the financier.

Anthony said: “I met Ghislaine and Jeffrey and was in shock at all the s*** they had.”

Now his testimony could make him a key witness for her.

Legal documents Prince Andrew's lawyer believes will stop the civil sex lawsuit against him have been unsealed and made public.


Virginia Guiffre, also known as Roberts, is suing the 61-year-old royal for alleged sexual assault dating back to when she was a teenager.

But the Duke of York's lawyer Andrew B Brettler had argued the settlement agreement she entered into in 2009 with Andrew's pal and convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein would bring any dispute to an end.

The papers - made public today by a New York court - state Ms Giuffre had agreed not to sue anyone connected to Epstein who could be described as a "potential defendant" - though doesn't name the prince directly.

They reveal the financier paid her $500,000 (£371,000) to end her claim.

Mr Brettler had previously told the New York hearing the agreement "releases Prince Andrew and others from any purported liability arising from the claims Ms Giuffre asserted against Prince Andrew here".

US District Judge Lewis A Kaplan, who is presiding over the civil case, is due to hold a video teleconference on Tuesday when a request by the Duke's legal team to dismiss the case will be heard.

Today it emerged that the Queen’s son continued to socialise with disgraced Ghislaine Maxwell for years after her paedophile boyfriend first came to police attention.

The Duke of York even sat directly opposite the socialite at her birthday celebrations at London’s Dorchester Hotel more than two years after he travelled to New York to sever ties with Epstein.

On Tuesday, a New York court will hear from lawyers representing Virginia Giuffre, who claims she was sexually abused by the Queen’s son three times when she was 17.

She is seeking punitive damages, but the duke’s lawyers will attempt to have Giuffre’s claim thrown out.

They plan to argue that a deal reached between Giuffre and Epstein in 2009, after she sued him for abuse, protects his associates from civil proceedings.

Lawyers for Giuffre, who now goes by her maiden name Virginia Roberts, say they have six witnesses prepared to testify that they saw Prince Andrew with her.

Meanwhile it has also been revealed that Maxwell, 60, wanted to take the stand at her four-week trial, but was talked out of it by her legal team.

She remains behind bars at the notorious Metropolitan Detention Centre awaiting sentencing after being found guilty by a jury last week.


Maxwell was convicted of five out of six charges of recruiting and trafficking young girls for billionaire Epstein Her lawyers believe it will be at least five months before she is sentenced. It is believed she will die in prison, potentially receiving a 65-year jail term.

During the socialite’s dramatic trial, a series of witnesses placed the Prince with Ms Roberts, including a pilot who testified that he flew them together on billionaire paedophile Jeffrey Epstein’s private jet, dubbed the ‘Lolita Express’.

Another woman claims she saw the pair at Tramp nightclub in London on the night of March 10, 2001, when Ms Roberts claims she was first forced to have sex with the Prince.

Her lawyer David Boies said: “The defence that Prince Andrew has is the same one Maxwell had, namely that the girls are lying, they can’t be believed, they are making it up. Well, the Maxwell jury did believe those girls.”

Lawyers for the prince contend that a release clause in the settlement restricts her ability to sue others connected to Epstein. The documents also showed she would be paid $500,000 as part of the settlement of her case against Epstein.

The prince – who vehemently denies the allegations made by Giuffre and is not mentioned in the 2009 settlement – has said that the deal shields him from any liability.




Lawyers for the prince contend the settlement contains provisions that bar Giuffre from taking legal action against many Epstein associates.


Giuffre has long accused Epstein and his sometime girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell – now a convicted sex trafficker – of forcing her into sex with the royal when she was 17.

It now falls to US district judge Lewis Kaplan in New York to determine whether the clause in the 2009 agreement blocks Giuffre’s lawsuit against Andrew.


The litigation is in its early stages, and Kaplan has said it could go to trial between September and December of 2022 if no settlement is reached.

A hearing over Andrew’s motion to dismiss the civil lawsuit is scheduled for Today.

Meanwhile, a top lawyer has said that Prince Andrew should be quizzed by the Met Police about Andrew's knowledge of Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell's child sex trafficking.

According to former chief prosecutor Nazir Afzal, anything linking them to the UK must be fully investigated.

The Express reported that ex-Chief Crown Prosecutor for the north west of England, Mr Afzal, said that cops to go one step further and review all alleged offences "without fear or favour" - including questioning Andrew if necessary.

“Carolyn” testified last month during Maxwell’s three-week federal sex-trafficking trial that she was abused for years by Jeffrey Epstein after she was introduced to the financier in 2002 by Ms Giuffre, who asked if she “wanted to go make money.”

Carolyn, who was 14 at the time and gave evidence under her first name only, said Ms Giuffre, then aged 18, brought her to Epstein’s house in Palm Beach, Florida, where the pair were greeted by Maxwell.

She said the girls, who were friends from school, were paid $300 in $100 bills at the end of each encounter

Ms Giuffre has acknowledged recruiting girls for Epstein, in what has been likened to a pyramid scheme of abuse, claiming she was coerced into doing so by Maxwell.

Carolyn’s testimony could also be seized upon by Prince Andrew’s lawyers as they attempt to discredit Ms Giuffre, who is now 38 and living in Australia.

Ms Giuffre has said that Epstein and Maxwell forced her to have sex with public figures, including Mr Dershowitz and the Duke, when she was 17. She asserted that she had sex with Mr Dershowitz, a longtime criminal defense lawyer known for representing high-profile clients including former President Donald Trump, at least six times in Epstein’s various residences. Both men deny the allegations.

“Prof. Dershowitz seeks to take the deposition of a witness identified by the first name of Carolyn. Knowing Carolyn was underaged, (Ms Giuffre) recruited her to perform sexual massages for Jeffrey Epstein, brought her to Epstein’s home for that purpose, and told her to lie about her age if asked,” his lawyers wrote in a filing to the Southern District of New York.

Ms Giuffre sued Mr Dershowitz for defamation in 2019. He then countersued Ms Giuffre, claiming she had made false claims about him so that she could extort money from a member of Epstein’s inner circle.




Mr Dershowitz, who previously represented Epstein, helped negotiate a lenient non-prosecution agreement for his client in 2009.

He had claimed the agreement frees both he and Prince Andrew from lawsuits filed by Epstein’s victims. A judge in Ms Giuffre’s civil case against the Duke is set to rule on the issue imminently.


As well as Carolyn, Mr Dershowitz is seeking to depose Ms Giuffre’s husband, ex-boyfriend and father, as well as former employees of Epstein’s residences.


“Prof. Dershowitz is also entitled to inquire of these witnesses whether Plaintiff ever did or said anything to suggest to them that she was ‘a victim of sex trafficking and repeated sexual abuse’ as alleged,” his legal team wrote.


Prince Andrew continues to wait for the ruling by Lewis A. Kaplan, the judge overseeing his case who has sent down mobsters and terrorists.

Yet whatever happens, the court of public opinion has already found the Duke of York guilty.

Prosecutors in Ghislaine Maxwell’s sex-trafficking trial on Wednesday asked the judge for an “inquiry” after a juror said in recent post-trial media interviews that he was a victim of sexual abuse.

Maxwell’s legal team said they believe a new trial is warranted following revelations about this juror.


Maxwell was found guilty on 29 December of five counts for facilitating the late financier Jeffrey Epstein’s sexual abuse of girls, some as young as 14.

“While the court instructed jurors that they were free to discuss their jury service with anyone of their choosing, some of the statements, as related in the media, merit attention by the court. In particular, the juror has described being a victim of sexual abuse,” prosecutors wrote.

“Assuming the accuracy of the reporting, the juror asserted that he ‘flew through’ the prospective juror questionnaire and does not recall being asked whether he had been a victim of sexual abuse, but stated that ‘he would have answered honestly’.

“Based on the foregoing, the government believes the court should conduct an inquiry,” they wrote to judge Alison Nathan.

The juror’s claim that he did not recall being asked about sexual abuse has spurred questions, given that prospective jurors were given a questionnaire which directly asked them this topic.

One inquiry on the questionnaire stated: “Have you or a friend or family member ever been the victim of sexual harassment, sexual abuse, or sexual assault?”

Another asked: “Witnesses in this case may testify claiming sexual abuse or sexual assault. Would you have any difficulty assessing the credibility of a witness claiming sexual assault or abuse just like you would any other witness?”

In their letter, prosecutors proposed Judge Nathan schedule a hearing in about a month, as well as a schedule for filing paperwork relating to this inquiry.

“Government respectfully submits that any juror investigation should be conducted exclusively under the supervision of the court,” they wrote. “If the court decides to schedule such a hearing, the government respectfully requests that the court’s staff promptly contact the juror to notify him of the hearing and inquire whether he would like counsel to be appointed in connection with it.”

One of Maxwell’s lawyers, Christian Everdell, filed a letter about the juror’s comments several hours after prosecutors’ submission, describing it as “an issue of pressing importance”.

While this filing had some redactions, one visible phrase said “presents incontrovertible grounds for a new trial under rule 33”. Everdell asked Nathan to set a schedule for both sides to submit filings on the issue.

“Should the defense prevail on this motion – and we believe the law and facts are clearly on our side – it would render all other post-trial motions moot. Ms Maxwell should not have to expend precious time and resources briefing other motions when this motion can and should be dispositive,” Everdell said.

“Accordingly, the defense respectfully requests that the court set a briefing schedule for this motion alone and defer setting a briefing schedule for any other post-trial motions.”

Jeffrey Pagliuca, another one of Maxwell’s lawyers, said in a filing shortly thereafter that “the government’s request for a hearing is premature because based on undisputed, publicly available information, the Court can and should order a new trial without any evidentiary hearing.

“It is clear to Ms Maxwell that based on this record alone a new trial is required,” Pagliuca also wrote.

David S Weinstein, a former federal prosecutor who is now a partner at Jones Walker LLP, said: “Based on the letter motion that was filed today by the government, it’s clear that they want to ensure that it’s the court who conducts any questioning of this juror.”

He said: “They want to put the court on notice that this information is out there and they want to prevent any other third party from speaking to this juror before the court does” – including Maxwell’s defense team.

At issue will be what the juror said on his questionnaire. If he answered no, the motivation behind that answer could influence the outcome of any inquiry. For example, if he answered no because he was not paying attention, that might present less of a problem than if he knowingly answered in the negative to avoid being disqualified.

“If it turned out he checked the box yes, and both the defense and prosecution never bothered to follow up on it, that’s on them,” Weinstein said.

Weinstein said that the process would involve Nathan questioning the juror. Then, Nathan will provide the information from this questioning to both sides.

“If the answers are ‘I misled you because I wanted to serve’, then that’s going to provide the defense a basis to push their side forward,” he explained. “It’s certainly going to prolong things. It’s going to provide more motion practice, it’s going to potentially delay the sentencing.”

The outcome will rest on Nathan, Weinstein said.

“She can decide whether or not it’s going to be a new trial, or she could deny [any] motion for a new trial, and then it will become an issue for the court of appeals whether or not that was an error.”

“This could be a huge blow to the prosecution if this juror did in fact fail to provide such information,” New York criminal defense attorney Julie Rendelman told the Guardian. “Keep in mind that this juror suggests that his own experience as a victim of sexual abuse not only impacted his decision making but others in the jury who he relayed his story to.”

Late Wednesday afternoon, the New York Times revealed that another juror had told their fellow panelists that they had been sexually abused. This juror told The Times that their disclosure seemed to aid in shaping deliberations.

The pair agreed last September to sell the seven-bedroom property to a wealthy European investor. They bought it from millionaire French socialite Isabelle de Rouvre in 2014 for £16.6m.

But the deal has not been completed. Sources close to the Duke suggest he wants to push the sale through “urgently”.

Andrew and Fergie still owe £6.6million from the original purchase. Ms de Rouvre last year threatened to take them to court in Switzerland after they missed a payment date in December 2019.

The Yorks later agreed to pay the cash once they complete the sale of the property. As Andrew prepares to hear his fate Fergie, 62, and their *children are this week enjoying “a final family holiday” at the chalet.

Prince Andrew’s former wife Sarah, 62, today declared it was “onwards and upwards” as she returned from a skiing holiday in Verbier, Switzerland, at the £17million chalet the Duke is having to sell to pay his legal bills, which have topped £2million.

Alan Dershowitz was interviewed shortly after Ghislaine Maxwell was found guilty of trafficking young girls to late US financier Epstein.

Mr Dershowitz himself has been accused of sexual abuse by one of Epstein's accusers - but denies that allegation.

The BBC later decided the interview had breached its own editorial standards.

After the broadcast, the corporation admitted that the US lawyer had not been "a suitable person to interview as an impartial analyst" at that time.

Mr Davie was called to appear before the House of Lords communications and digital committee to answer parliamentarians' questions about the incident which took place in the week immediately following Christmas.

With BBC News in the midst of an ongoing programme of job cuts and restructuring, he was asked whether "centralisation" had risked "amplifying" editorial errors.

Referring to the interview with Mr Dershowitz, Mr Davie said: "We looked at what happened but there was no investigation.

"We admitted immediately it was in breach of our editorial guidelines and straight away said it was a mistake.

"Then you get to why it was a mistake. You can argue a little bit in terms of the amount of seniority and cover we had during Christmas, during Covid."

But he said: "This was simply about the amount of due diligence that was done by the planner and the knowledge level of the person who was putting the person on air."

Mr Davie told peers "not everything gets centralised" under the BBC's plans to make savings.

The interview with Mr Dershowitz, 83, was broadcast on BBC World News and the BBC News Channel, shortly after the Maxwell verdict was announced.

Mr Dershowitz used the airtime to denigrate Virginia Giuffre's claims against himself and Prince Andrew. Both men deny her allegations of sexual abuse.

He was introduced on the news segment as a "constitutional lawyer" to provide analysis on the verdict - and his connection with Epstein and Ms Giuffre was not made clear in the interview.

The interview was also featured on the BBC News live page about the trial, and a short clip was played twice on Newsday on World Service English, but those instances gave some context about who Mr Dershowitz was.

Prince Andrew’s military affiliations and royal patronages are being returned to Queen Elizabeth II at her behest in the wake of his ongoing legal battle with Jeffrey Epstein accuser Virginia Roberts Giuffre.

On Thursday, Buckingham Palace confirmed in a statement sent to Fox News that the reigning monarch, 95, agreed to accept the returned accolades.

"With The Queen's approval and agreement, The Duke of York’s military affiliations and Royal patronages have been returned to The Queen," the statement read. "The Duke of York will continue not to undertake any public duties and is defending this case as a private citizen."

One royal source also claimed that the Duke of York will no longer use "His Royal Highness" or HRH in any official capacity.

On Wednesday, a judge refused to dismiss a lawsuit against the British prince by the American woman who said he sexually abused her when she was 17.


U.S. District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan rejected an argument by Andrew’s attorneys that Giuffre’s lawsuit should be thrown out at an early stage because of an old legal settlement she had with Epstein, the late American financier she claimed set up sexual encounters with the royal, 61. Kaplan said the $500,000 settlement between Epstein and Giuffre didn’t involve the prince and didn’t bar a suit against him now.

The queen's second son previously quit public duties in November 2019, but he was still listed on the royal family’s website as a patron or member of around 100 charities and organizations.

Giuffre sued Andrew in August, alleging she was coerced into sexual encounters with him in 2001 by Epstein and his longtime companion, Ghislaine Maxwell. Giuffre said she was sexually abused by Andrew at Maxwell’s London home, at Epstein’s New York mansion and his estate in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Prince Andrew fears he faces “financial ruin” over his civil sex abuse case, amid mounting legal bills and a potential £10million settlement with his accuser Virginia Giuffre, it has emerged.

The disgraced Duke of York is counting the cost of being banished from the royal family after the Queen stripped him of military titles and his remaining royal patronages.

Andrew has been left to fight allegations of rape a “private citizen” after Her Majesty, with advice from future kings Prince Charles and Prince William, banished him from royal life forever.

The monarch and her heirs decided to cut him adrift after becoming “infuriated” with the crisis threatening The Firm, it is understood.

One royal source suggested senior royals believed stricken Andrew had “run out of road” as the pressure significantly increased this week, following a New York judge’s decision to throw out the Duke’s latest bid to halt a full civil trial.

The Prince of Wales today refused to acknowledge a reporter’s questions on his brother’s “situation”, during a visit the Haddow Country Park in Aberdeenshire.



Buckingham Palace has offered no further comment since a bombshell statement was delivered announcing Andrew’s banishment on Thursday at 5pm.

The Mirror can reveal that Andrew was today locked in talks with his teams of lawyers in the UK and US as they waited for Ms Giuffre’s team to respond to a 6pm deadline about her living arrangements.


The Duke’s legal team still believe his case can not be heard under US federal law due to a “domicile arrangement”, arguing that at least one party in a civil lawsuit must be a resident in the country.


Ms Giuffre, 38, who claims Andrew had sex with her on three occasions when she was just 17, has lived in Australia since 2002.

But amid the chaos and uncertainty, Andrew - who has always denied the allegations - is understood to have taken time to bemoan his financial situation, telling his closest confidants he fears being left insolvent in addition to an outcast from his family.

Despite rushing to complete the sale of a £17million Swiss chalet, his mounting debts include lawyers’ fees of at least £2million and a £6million payment to a French socialite he bought the alpine mansion from in 2014.

Legal experts believe Andrew may have to stump up as much as £10million to Ms Giuffre to stop the case coming to court.

In contrast Ms Giuffre’s lawyer has insisted she was not only interested in financial recompense.


A royal source said: “Until very recently it appears the absolute enormity of this case and the consequences he faces has not hit him (Andrew).

“Now the bills are mounting up and the possibility of a settlement, or even worse a judgement against him, is being widely discussed; he fears complete financial ruin.

“Andrew thought, indeed he was advised that this would all go away in time and neither has happened, leaving him facing an extraordinary uphill battle to even salvage any crumb of his reputation.

“There is a very real prospect of him being completely broke.”


The Mirror understands the Queen “would not assist” her son in paying a settlement to Ms Giuffre due to the perceived reputational damage to the Crown.

Sources close to the Duke maintained he would “continue to fight to clear his name” despite being cut adrift from his family.

As Andrew limps towards the next stage of his legal battle, it can be revealed how he was given just two hours notice on Thursday to attend a face-to-face meeting with the Queen at midday.

Sources close to the Duke revealed he was “fully aware what was coming” and stayed with Her Majesty for just half an hour to be told he was being stripped of all military associations and patronages.

The Queen’s most senior counsel had already laid bare the chances of Andrew being forced to pay out a multi-million pound settlement to halt an explosive trial taking place.

But despite clear water being placed between Andrew and the monarchy due to the tawdry saga, sources have confirmed that Andrew will not lose his security detail, although it is likely to be scaled back.

Sources have suggested the Queen would privately meet the cost of her son’s £300,000 annual security bill if he is left broke.

• Palace insiders suggested that although such a decision has not been rubber stamped, were it to be rubber stamped it would be likely to cause further friction within the family after Prince Harry and his wife Meghan after they were cut adrift and told to pay for their own security when they quit their royal roles.

A spokesperson for the Duke of York did not comment.

In Ghislaine, Prince Andrew and the Paedophile (ITV), reporter and presenter Ranvir Singh traces the grisly story of Ghislaine Maxwell and her conviction on charges of sex trafficking and conspiracy for her part in procuring underage girls – a child of just 14 in one of the cases brought to trial – for the convicted paedophile and billionaire Jeffrey Epstein.

At 45 minutes (plus adverts) it is not an in-depth investigation to match either the four-hour Netflix miniseries Jeffrey Epstein: Filthy Rich nor the three-part documentary by Sky, Epstein’s Shadow (the latter skewing close to the view of Maxwell as victim, but nevertheless covering a lot of ground in detail).

The question it poses at the start rather answers itself. “How did the privileged daughter of a billionaire newspaper tycoon, intimate with high society and royal palaces, become a paedophile’s accomplice?”


Could it be that when you grow up in a tiny bubble of rich, protected, privileged, narcissist- and sociopath-heavy elitists, certain human traits such as empathy, conscience and morality are not as fully nurtured as they might be? Discuss over champagne and little people’s tears.


The show is structured around the unfolding of the 12-day trial, interspersed with new and older interviews with survivors of Epstein and Maxwell’s predations (one of whom, Annie Farmer, recalls how, at 16, she brought a homework assignment on British writers to an early visit, eager for Maxwell’s input), and an attempt to establish the nature of Maxwell’s relationship with (no longer His Royal Highness) Prince Andrew.


They first met when she was at Oxford University and moving in circles that included prime-minister-to-be Boris Johnson. During the years she was with Epstein, she had – according to Andrew’s former protection officer Paul Page – such free access to the palace that his team assumed she and the prince were having “an intimate relationship”.


Page also reveals that the prince keeps “50 or 60 soft toys” on his bed and a laminated photo of them at his bedside. If the maids don’t put them back in exactly the order shown, he shouts, screams and becomes “verbally abusive”. You could argue that this is not relevant to the claims mounting against him as a result of his friendship with Epstein, of course.


That’s the friendship (as we are shown again in a clip of the infamous interview with Emily Maitlis, which becomes no less excruciating with the passage of time) Andrew claimed endured after Epstein’s conviction for child abuse because of “my tendency to be too honourable”. On the other hand, what could be more relevant than such glaring proof of how deep the childishness and sense of entitlement runs in the man?

The survivors and their lawyer, Lisa Bloom, describe how powerful a weapon Maxwell was. As a female member of Epstein’s entourage, she made the girls she met relax and become more vulnerable to her recruitment tactics. Lisa Phillips, who was 21 when she first met Epstein, remembers Maxwell brightly announcing that: “‘Jeffrey is waiting for his massage!’


She made it seem normal.” Once in his room, “things took a turn and it wasn’t normal any more”. Singh tells her it’s understandable if she froze. “No,” says Phillips. “I went along with it. That’s what happens in these situations. You’re not going to kick and scream and yell.”

There’s a study to be done on the evolution of women’s testimony over the past few years. If you have watched enough of what we might loosely call the #MeToo documentaries – Surviving R Kelly, for example, or Untouchable: the Rise and Fall of Harvey Weinstein, Look Away and many others – you can see it has become gradually bolder, and Phillips feeling able to stand by having had what was once accepted as an “unnatural” reaction to her assault is a heartening instance of it.


In Look Away, about sexual abuse and exploitation in the music industry, Jackie Fuchs gave a short account of being drugged and raped by her band’s manager and then, in what felt like a watershed moment, wrested back narrative control by adding: “And now we stop talking about this. Because I think there are people out there who just feed off watching women cry, talking about their sexual assault. And I just want to say – if you’re one of them: **** you. Your time is over.”

Maxwell faces up to 65 years in prison. Her brother Ian gives a tearful interview to Singh towards the end of the programme. “We believe her. We love her. And we hope she will get the justice she definitely deserves.” At least part of that sentiment we can all agree with wholeheartedly.

Ghislaine, Prince Andrew and The Paedophile: Five Things We Learned From New Documentary


As the British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell awaits sentencing on charges of recruiting and trafficking girls for the deceased Jeffrey Epstein to abuse, an ITV documentary has chronicled the story of the disgraced pair via exclusive interviews with friends of the financier, survivors and staff, from which surfaced unsavoury new revelations of their relationship with Prince Andrew.

Ghislaine, Prince Andrew and the Paedophile arrived on UK screens just days after Maxwell was found guilty of five out of six charges against her. She was cleared of one charge: enticing a minor to travel to engage in illegal sex acts. Epstein’s accomplice could face a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison.

Meanwhile, the Duke of York finds himself facing a possible civil trial after Virginia Giuffre - who also made an appearance during the latter half of the documentary - accused him of sexual assault in the early 2000s.

The Queen stripped Prince Andrew of his military titles and royal patronages in the wake of a US judge allowing Giuffre’s case involving her son to move to trial.


Here are five things we learned from Ghislaine, Prince Andrew and the Paedophile:

1. Prince Andrew would ‘shout and scream’ if his teddy bear collection was rearranged, it is claimed

Speaking about the Duke’s private apartment, former royal protection officer Paul Page said: “It had about 50 or 60 stuffed toys positioned on the bed.

“And, basically, there was a card the inspector showed us in a drawer, and it was a picture of these bears all in situ on the bed.

“And the reason for the laminated picture was that, if those bears weren’t put back in the right order by the maids, he would shout and scream and become verbally abusive.”


2. Ghislaine Maxwell may have had an ‘intimate relationship’ with the Duke of York

Paul Page has also claimed Prince Andrew may have been involved in an “intimate relationship” with the former socialite.

Speaking to an ITV journalist, Mr Page said he believes Maxwell entered and reentered the palace four times in one day, “in and out, in and out.”

“From the way she was allowed to enter and exit the palace, at will, we realised… suspected, that she may have had an intimate relationship with Prince Andrew.”

“A colleague of mine remembered her coming in four times in one day from the morning till the evening – she kept coming in and out, in and out…” he claimed.


3. The royal’s number appeared to be seen in Maxwell and Epstein’s ‘little black book’

During one clip, the same journalist discovers an entry in the book under ‘Duke of York’, with Buckingham Palace, London, assigned as the address.

A number is also supplied, which the journalist proceeds to call.

It goes to voicemail and a message - the voice of which she said “sounds like Andrew” - said: “I’m afraid I have not been quick enough to get to the phone before it went off to take your message. If you do have a message, please leave it and I will get back to you as soon as I can.”


4. One of Maxwell’s jurors said the ‘brutal’ trial deliberations left them in tears while she was ‘like a stone’

The juror, known by his first names Scotty David, revealed the 12 jury members felt “comfortable” with Maxwell’s guilty verdict, but said the 40 hours of deliberations had been an emotionally draining experience.

In an interview, Scotty David said: “There were tears, because this is somebody’s life on the line. The prosecution had to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Ghislaine Maxwell was guilty of these crimes.

“And we all felt comfortable, but the emotional toll it took on all of us after spending a week combing through all the evidence, all the testimony again, was, it was brutal.”


5. Ghislaine Maxwell was ‘essentially a pimp’, lawyer to Epstein’s survivors claimed

The lawyer who represented eight victims of the sexual predator Jeffrey Epstein in the trial against Maxwell has said she “took advantage” of the young girls who trusted her for “being a woman.”

Speaking in the ITV documentary, Lisa Bloom said that the girls were not recruited by Epstein, but Ghislaine Maxwell.

She described Maxwell and Epstein’s operation as a “pyramid scheme, with Jeffery Epstein at the top, then Ghislaine, and then all the young girls.”

Bloom added that Maxwell was “essentially a pimp” and was also occasionally “directly involved in the sexual assault herself.”

The attorney, who was also involved in the sexual assault case against Harvey Weinstein, said that the girls found Maxwell more “trusting” as she was a women. “Ghislaine took advantage of that,” she added.

“She normalised Jeffery Epstein’s behaviour and set the tone to enable him to be the predator he was.

“Women trusted her, people trusted her.”
