New book by far-right Kevin Roberts calls for conservatives to burn away the rot of US institutions
Kevin Roberts, the architect of the controversial Project 2025, writes in his soon-to-be-released book that he wants to conduct a "slow burn" of multiple American institutions.
The Guardian has obtained a copy of the book and calls for setting presumably metaphorical fire to a wide variety of institutions that are insufficiently right wing.
"Many of Americas institutions have been completely hollowed out," Roberts contends. "Decadent and rootless, these institutions serve only as shelter for our corrupt elite. Meanwhile, they block out the light and suck up the nutrients necessary for new American institutions to grow. For America to flourish again, they don?t need to be reformed; they need to be burned."
Roberts list of institutions in need of a fiery cleanse includes both traditional conservative bogeymen such as the media and Ivy League universities but also some institutions that were once seen as staunchly conservative, including the FBI, "80% of ?Catholic? higher education," and even "The Boy Scouts of America."

Flynn, the controversial figure Trump named to be his White House national security adviser, has recently raised eyebrows for escalating violent rhetoric against Vice President Kamala Harris, calling her "an enemy of America" and saying we're at "war."
Less than two weeks later, he stunned observers with his answer to a question about potentially executing political enemies. Now, he has made another statement that is drawing attention from onlookers.
On Friday, Flynn responded to a message on social media that was directed at him.
"Never Forget who these people are and what they did!" it said.
"I?m like an elephant, except I?m an Irish elephant," Flynn said in his response. "Not only will I never forget, I will never forgive. People must be held accountable."
Flynn goes on to specifically name former president Barack Obama.
"And you all know precisely who you are. [Obama] yup, starts with you," Flynn said. "You tried to destroy my family as well as [Trump] and his family along with our country?unforgivable."
Flynn added that Newsmax, a right-wing media network, has "all the receipts."
"Just ask me!" he added.
Investigative journalist Dave Troy flagged the message on Saturday.
"No big deal. Just a Putin-aligned retired general threatening a former president," Troy wrote before tagging the Secret Service.
"What do you say [Secret Service], does he get a doorknock, or are we no longer in that business? The public wants to know."

The current Trump transition, like its predecessors, is set up as a 'dark money' nonprofit. Those groups typically do not have to disclose their donors, even to the Internal Revenue Service. But unlike Mr. Trumps team this year, earlier transitions accepted financial support from the General Services Administration, which oversees much of the transition process.
In exchange for that federal money, they agreed to conditions that other dark-money nonprofits do not have to follow, like capping individual contributions at $5,000 and disclosing the names of their donors.
Although Trump Education Secretary nominee Linda McMahon and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick both of whom helm the MAGA transition team claim the president-elect will sign the agreements, "Trumps transition team, formally known as Trump Vance 2025 Transition Inc., has revealed nothing about how much money it hopes to raise, who has contributed to the fund or how it is spending the money," the Times reports.
When the money isnt disclosed, its not clear how much everybody is giving, who is giving it and what they are getting in return for their donations," said Heath Brown, a professor of public policy at John Jay College of Criminal Justice public policy Professor Heath Brown. "Its an area where the vast majority of Americans would agree that they want to know who is paying that bill."

Come January, however, any Russians who answered those calls will be facing a very different geopolitical reality. Donald Trump will be back in the White House and, if he pursues the same policies as last time around, will look to make an ally of Putins Russia. His nomination for a key intelligence post is Tulsi Gabbard, who has raised concerns with her remarks on foreign policy in recent years, including speaking of Russias legitimate security concerns as part of the cause of the war in Ukraine.
The dramatic change in potential policy towards Russia and Ukraine, combined with Trumps well-established dismissiveness of concerns over the security of classified information, may lead to sleepless nights among any double agents who remain inside Russia.

Multiple Democratic senators are pointing with alarm at what they believe are gaps in information provided by the FBI on some of Donald Trumps most controversial Cabinet nominees.

One example is the slim information provided on Fox News personality Pete Hegseth, chosen to be the president-elects secretary of defense, does not include examinations of information they have been provided directly.
Hegseth is facing a slew of questions over accusations of sexual assault, excessive drinking and financial improprieties while heading up several veterans organizations.
With Hegseth scheduled for a confirmation hearing on Tuesday, Democrats are questioning whether the nominee has received enough scrutiny in the short time allowed.
The Times is reporting, several Democrats on the panel expressed concerns that they might not have relevant information for Hegseths confirmation hearing on Tuesday, adding, Democrats on the committee believe there are additional allegations that should appear in the pages of an F.B.I. background check, to inform their questioning. That belief is based in part on information they have gleaned from individuals who have quietly approached Senate offices to divulge information about Hegseth.
Referring to outside information he has received, Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) stated, Damning is an understatement, and suggested he feels what he has seen so far gives the appearance of a cover-up.
Sen Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) also weighed in, pointing out, I need to see his F.B.I. background check, we need to see his financial disclosures. And we need to know about any other potential lawsuits he might be facing, any other allegations he might be facing.
The NYT report adds, F.B.I. officials began calling and interviewing witnesses to Hegseths behavior last month, asking, among other subjects, whether Hegseth abused alcohol.
But it not clear how many witnesses they reached, or how forthcoming those witnesses were. .

U.S. Air Force plane that touched down in Moscow late on Thursday (13 Feb) has sparked plenty of confusion as onlookers believe peace talks about Russias invasion of Ukraine could be taking place.
The Gulfstream C-37B aircraft, bearing the tail number 09-0525, arrived at Vnukovo Airport in the Russian capital around 10:50pm local time. Tracked by Flightradar24, the flights unusual nature amidst ongoing U.S.-Russia discussions on global matters has fuelled speculation.
The plane had earlier departed from a US Department of Defense facility in Camp Springs, Maryland, stopped over in Rotterdam, before proceeding to Moscow.
It stayed grounded for less than an hour before heading west to Warsaw. The identities of the passengers on board have not been officially disclosed, but the C-37B is typically used to ferry high-ranking officials and carry out sensitive missions.

The US Air Force C-37B was seen flying to Russias capital. The jet took off from Rotterdam, in the Netherlands, before it flew over Germany, the Baltic Sea, and Latvia before moving on to Moscow.
It landed at Vnukovo International Airport in the Russian Capital at about 7:40pm local time, yesterday. The plane then took off after about an hour and left Russian airspace through Latvia before flying through Lithuania and ultimately landing outside Warsaw, Poland, a NATO member state.
The US has an army garrison in Poznan, close to Warsaw. The C-37B is not part of the standard military transport and is typically used for high-profile missions.
Its arrival in Moscow has sparked several theories that suggest a high-level sensitive mission. One theory suggests the plane was taking a diplomate to open communications between Washington and Moscow.
Trump said he and his Russian counterpart had discussed visiting one anothers countries in the future. The US has since turned on its consistent policy since the war began and appeared to suggest Ukraine should surrender its occupied territories and forget about becoming a NATO member.

The United States government has formally designated eight Latin American organised crime groups that also operate in the US as foreign terrorist organizations. They are involved in drug trafficking, migrant smuggling and extend their territory through violence.
The Trump administration is applying a terrorist designation that?s normally reserved for groups like Islamic State or al-Qaida that use violence for political ends not for money focused crime rings such as the Latin American cartels.
The aim is to increase pressure on the groups and anyone who the US sees as aiding them. The list has the Sinaloa Cartel, the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, the Gulf Cartel and Northeast Cartel, La Familia and Carteles Unidos in Mexico.

US stocks whipsawed Tuesday after President Donald Trump made good on his threat to levy tariffs on Canada and Mexico, paving the way for a global trade war as leaders of both trading partners threatened retaliation.
The hefty tariffs imposed by the Trump administration could contribute to a crash in the global economy, similar to the Great Depression of the 1930s, said Andrew Wilson, deputy secretary-general of the International Chamber of Commerce, according to the Wall Street Journal.
?Our deep concern is that this could be the start of a downward spiral that puts us in 1930s trade-war territory,? Wilson said.
After dropping by around 800 points in the morning, the Dow recouped its losses before plunging at the end of trading to close lower by around 670 points, or 1.55%, at 42,521. The broader S&P 500 fell 1.22% and the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.35%, paring some of its losses after dipping into correction territory earlier.

The founder of a Texas megachurch accused of sexually abusing a 12 year old girl in the 1980s has been indicted, according to the Oklahoma Attorney Generals Office.

Gateway Church founder Robert Morris, 63, who stepped down in June after the allegations surfaced, was indicted Wednesday on five counts of lewd or indecent acts with a child stemming from incidents in the 1980s.
The megachurch in Southlake, Texas, is among the largest in the country.
In December 1982, Morris was a travelling evangelist visiting in Hominy with the family of the girl, prosecutors said. The sexual abuse began over Christmas of that year and continued for the next four years.
There can be no tolerance for those who sexually prey on children, Gentner Drummond, the states attorney general, said in a statement. This case is all the more despicable because the alleged perpetrator was a pastor who exploited his position. The victim in this case has waited far too many years for justice to be done.
Cindy Clemishire went public with her allegations that Morris molested her for years. Morris has admitted to having inappropriate sexual behaviour with a young lady decades earlier, and the church later said he was open and forthright about a moral failure
The grand jury found Morris used his hands and body to touch the girls private parts, according to The New York Times, which cited the indictment. The indictment refers to the girl as C.C.

Legal expects say the president doesnt have the authority to make those changes which conflict with federal voting laws. Its illegal at many different levels, said Sean Morales Doyle, the voting rights director at the Brennan Center for Justice.
The order directs the bipartisan Election Assistance Commission to change the federal voter registration form to require voters to show proof of citizenship, such as a passport, to a local or state official, but Morales Doyle said he cannot tell commissioners to do.
The order also requires states to remove noncitizens from voter rolls and share data to prosecute election crimes, and it provides access by the Department of Government Efficiency team, or DOGE, to state voter rolls.
It also directs federal agencies to share data, such as immigration and Social Security records, to states to allow officials to check the eligibility of names on their voter rolls, but voting rights advocates warn that outdated databases can contain errors and say past efforts by states to remove noncitizens from voter rolls have swept up eligible U.S. citizens.

Trumps executive orders shrinking the federal workforce make a notable exception for public safety staff, including those who fight wildland fires.

But ongoing cuts, funding freezes and hiring pauses have weakened the nations already strained firefighting force by hitting support staff who play crucial roles in preventing and battling blazes.
Most notably, about 700 Forest Service employees terminated in mid Februarys Valentines Day massacre are red card carrying staffers, an agency spokesperson confirmed to ProPublica. These workers hold other full time jobs in the agency, but theyve been trained to aid firefighting crews, such as by providing logistical support during blazes.
They also assist with prescribed burns, which reduce flammable vegetation and prevent bigger fires, but the burns can only move forward if theres a certain number of staff available to contain them. Non firefighting employees without a red card cannot perform such tasks.
Red card carrying employees are the backbone of the firefighting force, and their loss will have a significant impact, said Frank Beum, a board member of the National Association of Forest Service Retirees who spent more than four decades with the agency and ran the Rocky Mountain Region. There are not enough primary firefighters to do the full job that needs to be done when we have a high fire season.
ProPublica spoke to employees across the Forest Service which manages an area of land nearly twice the size of California including staff working in firefighting, facilities, timber sales and other roles, to learn how sweeping personnel changes are affecting the agencys ability to function. The employees said cuts, which have hit the agencys recreation, wildlife, IT and other divisions, show the Trump administration is shifting the agencys focus away from environmental stewardship and toward industry and firefighting.
But notwithstanding Trumps stated guardrails, the cuts have affected the Forest Services more than 10,000 person strong firefighting force. Hiring has slowed as there are fewer employees to get new workers up to speed and people are confused about which job titles can be hired.
Other cuts have led to the cancellation of some training programs and prescribed burns.
Its all really muddled in chaos, which is sort of the point, one Forest Service employee told ProPublica.
This agency is no longer serving its mission, another added. The employees asked not to be named for fear of retribution.
The Forest Service did not respond to questions about the impact of cuts other than to clarify the number of terminated employees. The Forest Service spokesperson said about 2,000 probationary employees typically new staff and those who were recently promoted, groups that have fewer workplace protections were fired in February.
Others with knowledge of the terminations, including a representative of a federal union and a Senate staffer, said the original number of terminated employees was 3,400 but that decreased, likely as workers were brought back in divisions such as timber sales.
The White House and a representative from the Department of Government Efficiency did not respond to requests for comment.
In early March, an independent federal board that reviews employees complaints compelled the Department of Agriculture, the Forest Services parent department, to reinstate more than 5,700 terminated probationary employees for 45 days. During their first weeks back on the payroll, many, including Forest Service personnel, were put on paid administrative leave and given no work.
The administration and DOGE continue working toward layoffs amid court challenges to their moves. Word circulated throughout the Forest Service in March that departmental leadership had compiled lists containing the names of thousands of additional Forest Service employees who could be soon laid off, according to some workers.
Additionally, understaffing in the agencys information technology unit is threatening firefighting operations, according to an agency employee. In December, the branch chief overseeing IT for the agencys fire and aviation division left the job. The Department of Agriculture posted the job opening, describing the division as providing support to the interagency wildland fire communitys technical needs.
This includes overseeing software that firefighting crews use to request equipment everything from fire resistant clothing to hoses from the agencys warehouses so first responders have uninterrupted access to lifesaving equipment.
The day after Trumps inauguration, the Department of Agriculture removed the IT job posting. The position remains unfilled, according to an employee with knowledge of the situation.
The hiring of new firefighters has also bogged down amid the deluge of sometimes conflicting orders from the administration and DOGE, Forest Service staffers said.
We are really, really behind onboarding our employees right now, a Forest Service firefighter told ProPublica.
The staffing issues exacerbate challenges that predate the second Trump administration. To address a massive budget shortfall, the Forest Service under President Joe Biden last year paused the hiring of seasonal workers, except those working on wildfires. Firefighters did see a permanent pay increase codified by Congress in its recently approved spending bill.
Still, many permanent employees, including many firefighters, work on a seasonal basis and are placed on an unpaid status for several months each year when there is less work. Uncertainty within the federal government has led many of these employees to give up on government work and look elsewhere.

A habeas petition filed on Thursday states that ICE New Orleans Field Office Director Mellissa Harper told V.M.L.s desperate father on a phone call that he could try to pick the girl up but would likely be arrested, as he is undocumented.
The petition argues that Harper was detaining V.M.L. in order to INDUCE her father to turn himself in to immigration authorities.
On Friday, U.S. District Judge Terry Doughty a Trump nominee, ordered a May 16 hearing in Monroe, Louisiana based on his strong suspicion that the government just deported a U.S. citizen with no meaningful process.

Left-wing social media users are convinced that the FBI this released heavily redacted documents on deceased pedophile Jeffrey Epstein in an effort to protect President Donald Trump.
But that story isnt true.
In posts on platforms such as X, users are sharing links to files on the sex trafficker from The Vault, a page on the FBIs website where documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act are published.
The agency also publishes files it has on figures after their death who have been subjected to public records requests.
The files on Epstein have been available on the site since 2020. But given the recent tease of a release by Attorney General Pam Bondi, liberals are mistaking the old files for a new drop.
And theyre taking the prolific redactions on them as proof of a cover up by the Trump administration.

A simple glance at the Internet Archive shows that the documents have been on the FBIs website since 2020, shared after Epstein died in 2019.
The false claims come as the public eagerly waits to see if Trump, who has repeatedly said he would release more information on Epstein, will follow through on his promises.
In an interview with Fox News last week, Bondi stated that the so called Epstein files were sitting on her desk right now and under review. But Trumps fans, including those in government, are tired of waiting.
Bondi eventually followed up on Wednesday that flight logs and a lot of names related to Epstein would likely be released.
Flight logs of Epstein and his alleged black book of names and addresses have already been published by the media. An actual client list that people insist is in the governments possession has never been proven to exist.
Which means the long-awaited release, assuming it takes place as planned, likely wont live up to public expectations.

Epstein was agitated and unable to sleep, jail officials observed. He called himself a coward and complained he was struggling to adapt to life behind bars, his life of luxury reduced to a concrete and steel cage.
Yet, even after a 31 hour stint on suicide watch, Epstein insisted he wasnt suicidal, telling a jail psychologist he had a wonderful life and would be crazy to end it. On Aug. 10, 2019, Epstein was dead.
Nearly four years later, the AP obtained more than 4,000 pages of documents related to Epsteins death from the federal Bureau of Prisons under the Freedom of Information Act.
They include a detailed psychological reconstruction of the events leading to Epsteins suicide, as well as his health history, internal agency reports, emails, memos and other records.
The records include notice that Epstein had mailed Nassar, who lost his final appeal to quash his 40 year sexual sentence in July 2022, after lawyers said the convicted molester was treated unfairly by a judge who called him a monster while handing down the ruling.
A copy of the letter itself was not included in the documents uncovered by FOIA request.
Taken together, the documents the AP obtained Thursday provide the most complete accounting to date of Epsteins detention and death, and its chaotic aftermath.

As head of the Department of Justice, Attorney General Pam Bondi leads the nations largest law office.
No federal precedent, and nothing in her oath of office, exempts her from the code of ethics, federal pleading rules, or the rule of law all attorneys swear to uphold.
The American Bar Association directs in Rule 3.6 that:
A lawyer who is participating in the investigation or litigation of a matter shall not make an extrajudicial outside the court statement that will be disseminated publicly and have a substantial likelihood of materially prejudicing a case.
Bondi has broken that rule many times
In other words, try your case in court, not on TV. Only supported facts of evidence are allowed in a court room, demagoguery, and assertions of opinion unsupported by admissible evidence, are not allowed. That is why judges have frequently admonished Trump. BUT Bondi has done WORSE and got away with it
Intentionally Misconstrued Orders
In April, the U.S. Supreme Court directed the Trump administration to facilitate the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland man who was deported to El Salvador without constitutionally required process. Under Bondis direction, DOJ lawyers argued that they dont understand plain English, spinning the term facilitate to mean removing any domestic obstacles that would otherwise impede the aliens ability to return here.
Rather than respect the plain language of the order, Bondis strategy is to play games to either render the ruling null due to delay or worse, to challenge the courts authority. As an example of the latter, the Justice Department filed an emergency motion to stay the Abrego Garcia order from U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis, aggressively challenging federal courts? authority even after the Supreme Court ruled, pleading that,
The federal courts do not have the authority to press gang the President or his agents into taking any particular act of diplomacy.
The appellate court was appropriately triggered. Without waiting for plaintiffs response, the Fourth Circuit court of appeals issued a sharp rebuke, written by a Reagan appointee, describing the US strategy as shocking
The government is asserting a right to stash away residents of this country in foreign prisons without the semblance of due process that is the foundation of our constitutional order. Further, it claims in essence that because it has rid itself of custody that there is nothing that can be done.
This should be shocking not only to judges, but to the intuitive sense of liberty that Americans far removed from courthouses still hold dear.
Abuse of Pleading Rules
Federal pleading rules require attorneys to certify that what they assert is warranted by existing law or a reasonable argument for modifying the law, and that their factual contentions have evidentiary support.
Rule 11 states that a court may impose sanctions on any attorney responsible for violating the pleading rule, including supervising attorneys.
As far as I can discern from public record, none of the facts in the El Salvador deportations have been pled with evidentiary support; Donald Trumps opinion that someone is a violent gang member is not evidence. This means Bondi has either allowed or directed attorneys under her supervision to file unsupported pleadings. That a conservative judge called the latest motion shocking also sets it outside the rule.
Not only is Bondi authorizing her attorneys to file unsupported pleadings, she has punished staff for making accurate statements to the court. In April, she directed the dismissal of Erez Reuveni, a career lawyer, for acknowledging to the court that Abrego Garcia had been deported to El Salvador in error.
Shortly thereafter, a 10 year veteran of the same unit resigned, saying he could not with clean conscience defend the departments actions under Bondi, claiming they ran counter to the law, the Constitution and basic principles of fairness and humanity.

Bondis latest transgression has not yet made it to court, but it likely will. Last week, Bondi declared that, under the Foreign Emoluments Clause, Trump can legally accept a flying palace 747 jumbo jet as a gift from Qatar, a country that has directly funded Hamas terrorism.
Qatars financial and political ties to Hamas have long been known. In a memorandum, Bondi concluded that the gift was legally permissible, apparently reasoning that because the gift is not officially conditioned on any official act, it does not constitute bribery.

More than 200 investors in his $TRUMP memecoin will arrive Thursday at his golf club in Virginia after $148 million worth of the collectible tokens to sit down for an exclusive dinner with the president himself, and the top 25 buyers will meet with him beforehand at a private reception, reported Politico.
Investors were given a short window to buy up $TRUMP memecoins, which have no underlying value, to score an invitation and generate trading fees for the Trump family and their partners in what critics describe as an obvious pay to play scheme.

In May, on The Berm Pit Podcast, which he co hosts with Scott Siverts, a former U.S. Marine, Wakulik responded to a Fox Business interview in which Patel and Bongino discussed the case of Jeffrey Epstein, the financier and convicted sex trafficker who died by suicide in August 2019, in a New York jail.
Angered because Patel and Bongino failed to say Epstein was an agent of the Israeli intelligence services, Wakulik advocated torture to get information, to extract information ? whether its waterboarding or sleep deprivation.

Commonly known as inciting a riot, under California Penal Code 404.6 it is a crime to deliberately exacerbate violence by encouraging peaceful protesters to engage in violence.

Nothing radicalizes citizens faster than being brutalized by state force
Whomever is advising Trump in LA knows the quickest and surest way to radicalize any population is to use or display disproportionate force against unarmed people. A disproportionate government response to civic unrest predictably triggers anti government sentiment, and causes violence that feels like self defense. Military advisors know this, every police chief in the nation knows this, counterinsurgency experts know this.
Every law enforcement organization in the US trains its officers to de escalate to diffuse violence rather than exacerbate it. The FBI acknowledges, through its Crisis Negotiation Unit, that de escalation is crucial in keeping police officers out of harms way ? anecdotal and impressionistic evidence clearly reflects that this methodical approach to managing crisis events has saved thousands.
The FBI has provided training to law enforcement agencies across the U.S. for the past 50 years, so its impossible that Trump, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Kash Patel, Trumps FBI director, are unaware of it.
Trump may have deliberately chosen unqualified clowns for his cabinet, but every one of them has attended enough rubber chicken conferences to know the importance of de escalation.
By sending the military into LA for what started out as largely peaceful protests, Trump is doing the opposite of what his own police intelligence counsels. Newsom is hip to what Trump is doing, and has made clear that Trump is putting the LA public, the police, and military members in harms way.
As he and the mayor of LA keep telling Trump, who knew it already, heavyhanded violence from the government never pacifies dissent, it causes violence to explode exponentially, which is Trumps plan.
Trumps Police State as DICTATOR
Trump has made no secret of his plan to recall thousands of American troops from overseas to station them instead on American soil. His goal, modelled after his fascist idol in Hungary, Viktor Orban, is to impose a police state under which the media, judges, and political opponents are silenced, imprisoned, or worse, for criticizing him.
With tanks in the streets and Fox News propaganda running 24/7, Trump will be able to remain in office until he appoints Don Jr. his successor. Trumps objective is to remain in power, which he has admitted, to insulate himself from legal accountability until he dies.
To that end, he has done everything in his power since returning to office to instigate violence on the streets, and not just in LA. So far hes tried to incite riots by arresting a Black mayor, arresting a Black member of Congress, arresting a sitting judge, kidnapping brown people on their way into work, and sending migrants to foreign gulags without due process, all while filming and televising the cruelty as widely as possible.

Lev Parnas, whose story of working with Trump on issues that led to the presidents first impeachment is told in a documentary called From Russia with Lev, used to work closely with Trump and his aides. More recently, Parnas, a former trusted operative, reported that Trump plans to stonewall Congress on crucial war issues.
On Thursday, Parnas wrote a piece called Trumps War on Truth Explodes, Nuclear Lies, Media Attacks, FBI Abuse, in which he argues, This week will go down in history not just for what happened, but for how hard they're trying to rewrite it.
And today, it only unraveled more. As Ive been telling you, what we're watching isnt just an international crisis. Its a coordinated disinformation campaign, a national security threat, and a blatant assault on democracy, all unfolding in real time, he wrote.

This is a lawful general regulation. Violations of paragraphs 4.1. through 4.5. of this Directive by persons subject to the Uniform Code of Military Justice are punishable under Article 92, Failure to Obey Order or Regulation
When Trump blurs this line designed to keep our military nonpartisan, hes imitating the behaviour of dictators like Putin, Erdoğan, and Orban who cultivate personal loyalty within the military, rather than respect for constitutional processes.
Trumps and Keggers move is apparently designed to test whether rank and file troops will go along with his political agenda and to build a foundation for future actions in which military force can be used domestically to defend his regime rather than the Constitution e.g. suppressing protests, enforcing disputed election outcomes, defending the suspension of elections, etc.
This is deeply dangerous to any democracy, which is why such behaviour is not allowed by the military or executive of any other advanced democracy in the world. When military loyalty becomes politicized, the risk of coups, unlawful orders, or martial law rises dramatically.
Which given the fact that Trumps already tried once to stage a coup against the United States makes this all the more alarming.....
But Trump didnt stop there. He next attacked the media filming the event, saying to more applause from the troops;
And for a little news, for the fake news back there, the fake news, ladies and gentlemen, look at them, look at them, aye yai yai, what I have to put up with. Fake news. What I have to put up with.
In fascist regimes, the press is always one of their first targets, typically labelled as enemies of the people, blamed for national problems, and ultimately silenced or co-opted.
Trump using such rhetoric normalizes contempt for independent journalism among armed agents of the state while it suggests the possibility of state aligned force being turned against critical media or dissenters.
Nazi Germany, Mussolinis Italy, Putins Russia, and more recently Orbans Hungary all followed this script. By repeating it, Trump is conditioning our soldiers to follow him rather than the Constitution and the law of the land.
He even brought along a vendor of Trump merchandise in violation of military policy, including MAGA hats, T shirts, and cards that read,

Historically, when democracies have slid into dictatorship, theres a moment when the military is required to choose sides, the press is cast as a threat, and loyalty to the regime is demanded and rewarded, rather than loyalty to the law.
We're there now. Today.
Every American, particularly those who?ve served in the military, should be outraged by Trumps fascist performance in front of our troops. That the only senior active duty military officer who spoke to the press did so anonymously he said, This has been a bad week for the Army for anyone who cares about us being a neutral institution; this was shameful is a damning indictment of how far away from American values we've let Trump drag our country DOWN....

In a statement, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, or IBEW, President Kenneth Cooper slammed the bill as a direct attack on working families that funnels tax breaks to the rich while turning its back on the people who power this country.
IBEW took issue with the bills tax increases on lower income people, while also taking an indirect jab at the bills move to phase out green energy subsidies, many of which have flowed to rural areas and communities that voted for the GOP.

You worked, of course, for a Rupert Murdoch owned outlet for a long time. You sued Fox. You said Murdoch fostered a culture of misogyny, toxicity, anchor Brianna Keilar said, addressing Carlson. Are you surprised that Trump did this And how do you think Murdoch might react?
Yeah, Im shocked. I mean, up until a few hours ago, I would have told you that I didnt think he was going to do this, Carlson said.
She noted that Trump may be emboldened after emerging successful with ABC and CBS and bribing law firms to give him free services. So I do think that the gloves are off now, she said. I think that this presents a conundrum for Murdoch and for Trump.
Carlson stressed that Trump was not Foxs pick for president in 2016, and likely wasnt their pick in 2024 either. Murdoch, she said, likes to poke Trump with his power, as evidenced by The Wall Street Journal coming out to hammer him more in his second term.
Up until now, we have not seen Fox News do the same, right They've been avoiding this story, she noted.
Carlson said Murdoch may have another trick up his sleeve when it comes to taking on the president.
The card that Murdoch has is that he can tell Fox News to start covering these stories. So thats also his conundrum, because the last time that that happened, all the viewers went to other outlets, she warned.
So theres risk for Murdoch in that scenario. But for Trump, theres also a conundrum, because if Murdoch decides to tell Fox to start covering these stories, thats a huge risk for Trump

In an article titled Inside the Long Friendship Between Trump and Epstein, Alan Feuer and Matthew Goldstein write that, For nearly 15 years, the two men socialized together in Manhattan and Palm Beach, Fla., before a falling out that preceded Epsteins first arrest.
Part of that article contains an interesting anecdote about the party
According to the report, when Mr. Trump hosted a party at Mar a Lago for young women in a so called calendar girl competition, Mr. Epstein was the only other guest.
The report cites George Houraney, a Florida based businessman who arranged the event.
Mr. Houraney recalled being surprised that Mr. Epstein was the only other person on the guest list, the report states before quoting the man.
I said, Donald, this is supposed to be a party with V.I.P.s, Mr. Houraney told The New York Times in 2019. You're telling me its you and Epstein
Mr. Houraneys then girlfriend and business partner, Jill Harth, later accused Mr. Trump of sexual misconduct on the night of the party.
In a lawsuit, Ms. Harth said that Mr. Trump took her into a bedroom and forcibly kissed and fondled her, and restrained her from leaving.
She also said that a contestant told her that Mr. Trump later that night crawled into her bed uninvited
Harth first met Trump in 1992 when she and her then husband, George Houraney, were in the beauty pageant business.
She used to run a model search called the American Dream Calendar Girl. Trump went into business with the couple, and agreed to sponsor some of their events. But, she says, shortly after their first pageant contest together, things quickly went south with their business relationship after she says she rebuffed his repeated, and unending sexual advances.
It was in one of the childrens room of Mar a Lago. He is showing this mural and the next thing I know he was pushing me up against the wall, and was making a move on me, and was all over me and again I was taken aback.
I was shocked he was doing this and there were people around. It was unsettling, I was nervous, and I couldnt understand why he was doing with me. I had to push him off of me, she recounted.
In 1995, the couples company, American Dream, sued Trump for breach of contract, and it was during that case that Harth said comments from Trump put her over the edge.
We were in the elevator on the way to a deposition and he said to his lawyer, see I told you she was a great piece of ass meaning he had already gotten me and that set me off to no end, and then I was ready to go with the harassment, Harth said.
Shortly after, in 1997, Harth filed her sexual harassment lawsuit in federal court. She quickly withdrew it after she said Trump agreed to settle with her husband on the contract claims. Abrams questioned why she would do that if she claims the allegations are true.
I was a young girl under the control of my husband who was kind of the boss, I wanted to be over with and done with, she said, adding that it was a stipulation of the settlement that she withdraw her sexual harassment claims.

The late financier and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein believed Donald Trump was the rat who informed on him to the FBI, leading to his 2006 arrest and sentencing for offenses involving underage girls, the Trump biographer Michael Wolff said.
Trump was aware of what was going on in Epsteins house for a very long time AND he then used that against Epstein, Wolff said.
Wolff made the startling claim on Wednesday the same day that, in the latest in a series of bombshell revelations, the Wall Street Journal reported that Trump has been told his name appears in the so called Epstein files that recorded investigations into the financiers conduct.
Trumps links to Epstein have billowed into the public consciousness in the past month after a Department of Justice attempt to shut down calls from Trump supporters for the release of Epsteins supposed client list spectacularly backfired.
Since then, repeated attempts by Trump and allies to distract from the scandal have failed. House Republican leadership has adjourned early for the summer, to avoid a vote on releasing the Epstein files and Trumps OWN DOJ has said it wants to interview Ghislaine Maxwell Epsteins former girlfriend who was imprisoned after being convicted of sex trafficking charges.

Wolff said that in 2004 the two men fell out over what Epstein alleged to be a money laundering scheme involving a Florida property, Trump, and a Russian oligarch.
And at that point, Wolff said, the investigation of Epstein began, and Epstein ? believed that it began because Trump notified the police about what was going on at Epsteins house, which Trump was fully aware of, because he was a frequent visitor to the house
Epstein was arrested but ultimately received a lenient deal from Florida authorities, pleading guilty to state charges of soliciting prostitution and soliciting prostitution from someone under the age of 18, and being sentenced to 18 months in a low security jail.
His avoidance of federal charges became an issue in 2019, when he was arrested again, while Trump was first in the White House. In August that year, Epstein died in federal custody in New York.
