FATE started out as a project featuring ex-MERCYFUL FATE guitarist Hank Shermann and since then, many things have happened in the band’s camp, including lineup changes and a long hiatus in between a total of six studio albums and a best-of collection. Now, two years after the interesting “Ghosts From The Past”, the Danish outfit returns with a brand new studio offering and the lineup remains the same in favor of some equally enticing music.
The meal is served well here, trust me. “If Not For The Devil” is a melodic yet powerful Hard Rock CD, so fans of this genre will have a good time listening. The songs are carefully written around major melodies and the keyboards do a great job backing the guitars. The melodies are floating all around but there’s nothing cheesy featured; on the contrary, and maybe we’re talking about the most ‘heavy’ FATE album to date. The grooves are on a high scale and the band has done justice to its history by including many trademark things seen on their – nearly – three decades of career. Do not forget, FATE secured a major deal with the EMI label in their first years and why they didn’t exploit themselves to a wider audience still remains a mystery.
“If Not For The Devil” has it all: AOR, melodic Hard Rock and Scandi Metal in one. It’s a better album than its predecessor, rest assured. Clocking to something less than 60 minutes, you get a release that shall keep you good company... and more. Grab this one, FATE is back and shows its teeth because there are many young bands playing this style out there but some older outfits can still show you how to do it in a better way.......
