Apocalyptica is known for innovation and 'doing things different'. The band did that already in the early days when they covered Metallica songs and created a cello version out of it. I liked it very much. Getting the first broader attention by doing this, the band started to write own songs, also based on cello. Along the way they added also some vocal to the songs and left the instrumental path.

Not they went back a bit more to their roots again. That means that they are back to instrumental songs on their new record "Wagner reloaded - live in Leipzig". Already this might be good news for fans of the earlier days. Secondly, and the name says it already a bit, the songs are about the work and live of Richard Wagner. Eventhough they didn't cover Wagner music, but they used his live and the music as inspiration for their own songs. The whole set was than performed in July 2013 in Leipzig, Germany, where Gregor Seiffert initiated an event to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Richard Wagner. The show was more than just a concert. It had some dance and theater elements and Apocalyptica had the honour to support the event with their music. Furthermore the band was supported by the MDR Sinfonie Orchester.

The songs, which can be seen as new Apocalyptica material are great. From the real heavy classical interpretations like "Flying Dutchman" and "Path of life" till the fragile and melancholic "Lullaby" the album covers everyhting. It is great to see how heavy 'classical' music can become if Apocalyptica works on it.

"Wagner reloaded - Life in Leipzig" became a great live document of an event which was different than other concerts...... (Review by MHMB)
