Gram Parsons guitarist and vocalist for the Byrds and leader of the Flying Burrito Brothers, is born. (1946)

Johnny Horton, who had a Number One smash "Battle of New Orleans," is killed in an auto accident in Texas. Ironically, he had just played his last show, at the Skyline in Austin, Texas-where Hank Williams had played his last show as well. Horton's widow, Billy Joe, was also Hanks Williams' widow. Johnny Horton was 33. (1960)

Decca Records releases the Who's "My Generation." The Pete Townshend song will be the English group's biggest British hit, reaching #2 but it will get no higher than #74 in the U.S. (1965)

Midway through a Beach Boys show at L.A.'s Whiskey-a-Go-Go, Brian Wilson, making one of rare stage appearances, loses his balance several times and has to be helped backstage. His right ear, the better of the two, sustains "severe damage" because of the volume level on-stage. (1970)

Performing "Quadrophenia" has posed many problems for the Who during their current tour. On this night in Newcastle, England, it falls apart. Much of the long work is performed to taped sections and when one of the pieces comes in fifteen seconds out of step with drummer Keith Moon, Pete Townsend explodes berating the sound engineer and storming off stage. Townsend returns a half hour later, but the group abandon "Quadrophenia" for the night. (1973)

Traffic receive a gold record for what will be their last album together, "When the Eagle Flies." (1974)

Ozzy Osbourne quits Black Sabbath, only to rejoin a few weeks later. He eventually quits again and pursues a successful solo career. (1977)

Van Halen announces Gary Cherone is no longer the band's lead singer after only three years and one disappointing album. (1999)
