The couple, who had been married since 1991, and their dog were found dead on Wednesday morning. Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza did not provide a cause of death, nor did he say when the couple might have died.
Sheriffs deputies went to the couples home Wednesday afternoon, the Santa Fe New Mexican reported. It is unclear if authorities were conducting a welfare check or responding to a report of the deaths.
Mendoza added that officials are in the middle of a preliminary death investigation and waiting on approval of a search warrant. The tragic fate of their dog could be key in the mystery surrounding their deaths and help detectives piece together the couples final moments.
Hackman, a two time Oscar winner with an estimated net worth of $80million, just turned 95 in late January. He became a recluse in the last 20 years of his life, after retiring from acting in 2004. He packed up his things, left Los Angeles for a quiet life in New Mexico and he never looked back.
Some initially thought that the shocking decision had to do with his marriage, but Hackman actually quit acting because of the severe stress he was under - which became too much to handle after he started to have issues with his heart.
The straw that broke the camels back was actually a stress test that I took in New York, he said of his retirement in a 2009 interview. The doctor advised me that my heart wasnt in the kind of shape that I should be putting it under any stress.
The former Marine appeared in more than 80 films, as well as on television and the stage during his lengthy career that started in the early 1960s.
The actor was first propelled into the spotlight when he starred in Bonnie and Clyde in 1967, and he went on to star in a slew of beloved movies and TV shows like Superman, The French Connection and Get Shorty, to name a few.
Hackman was married twice, most recently to 63 year old classical pianist Arakawa. He had three children with his first wife Faye Maltese.

Gene Hackman and his wife, pianist Betsy Arakawa, were found dead at their home in Santa Fe, New Mexico - and the future of their surviving dogs, Bear and Nikita, remains unclear
Bear, a German Shepherd and Nikita, an Akita-shepherd mix, cant be rehomed until the couples wills are read. They are currently at a dog boarding facility, after being rescued from the couples house.
They are staying there indefinitely until it transpires what provisions if any Hackman made for the dogs in the wake of his death. It remains to be seen if any of Hackmans family will take the dogs on board, or if they will be rehomed with a new family.
It comes as new heartbreaking details have emerged of the condition the dogs were found in. Cops have previously described the pair of dogs as healthy, while the remains of a third mummified dog was found in a closet in the bathroom near Betsys body.
Its since emerged that the dog that died was Zinna, a 12 year old Australian Kelpie mixed breed, and not a German Shepherd that was originally reported. The dogs who had been left free to roam for at least 10 days were found by cops, who called in animal control.
While Bear, who was found near Betsys body, was captured easily, Nikita was running around and skittish because of all the commotion. They tried to coax Nikita into Betsys car by opening and closing the door, and also by using treats, but the dog refused. In the end they had to set up a door trap for her overnight in the backyard. They were then both taken to a boarding facility.
The investigation into the couples death has stalled since cops are awaiting the results of the couple?s toxicology results. The actor was likely to have died about nine days before his body was discovered by authorities.
Cops previously confirmed the last event noted on Hackmans pacemaker was 17 February. However, police have so far been unable to establish if Hackman or his wife died first. Both were found mummified.
Cop are trying to piece together their last movements and have drawn up a list of people they are talking to, including the actor?s children Christopher, 65, Elizabeth Jean, 63, and Leslie, 58, who he had with his ex-wife Faye Maltese.

In a horrific twist, autopsies revealed Arakawa, 65, died from Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome on February 11.
Hackman, 95, died about 7 days later, around February 18, before the couples mummified remains were found in separate rooms of their $3.8 million Santa Fe home on February 26. Dr Jarrell said that it was likely that Hackman didnt even realize his wife had died due to his advanced Alzheimers.
Dr. Heather Jarrell, Chief Medical Investigator for the state of New Mexico, said their deaths had both been ruled as natural, and that no signs of internal or external trauma were found.
Their dog Zinna, who was found dead near Arakawa, was picked up from a veterinary hospital on February 9 after undergoing a procedure, which may explain why it was found in a kennel, according to authorities.
Arakawa is said to have died first on February 11 due to her infection, which initially presents with flu like symptoms.
A CDC source told DailyMail.com that while the couples main home did not show any signs of rodent activity, some of the propertys outbuildings - including a garage and two casitas had rodent droppings and other evidence of rodent activity.

Police have released bodycam footage from outside the Santa Fe home where Oscar winning actor Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa were found dead last month.
The footage, made public provides new insights into the investigation of the couples deaths after their bodies were discovered on 26 February
Multiple videos captured conversations between officers and witnesses at the scene, including contractors who initially raised the alarm. The couples bodies had begun to mummify by the time they were found, with authorities determining they had died at least a week apart.
In the footage, a handyman can be heard discussing the possibility of carbon monoxide poisoning with officers, initially suspected as a cause of death. 'That big vent you see on the roof by the front door, that things like that big around, so its meant to vent' the worker explained.

Ms Arakawa died, most likely on February 11, after becoming infected with a rare flu like disease called Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome.Hackman likely died later on February 18 of severe heart disease and showed evidence of advanced Alzheimers disease.
The report by the New Mexico department of public health found that the property?s outbuildings and garages were infested with rodents.
The main residence building apparently did not show evidence of a rodent infestation.
Records first reported by CNN show that a homesite environmental assessment took place at the property on 5 March a week after the actor and his wifes bodies were found.
The assessment showed that rodent faeces, a live rodent, a dead rodent and a rodent nest were found in the outbuildings and garages of the property.
Another report revealed the devastating internet searches by Gene Hackmans wife Betsy Arakawa, made just days before her death.
Authorities released a lengthy investigation report detailing some of the last emails and internet searches done by Gene Hackman's wife in the days before her death.
The investigation report has now shown that Arakawa had been scouring the internet for information on flu-like symptoms and breathing techniques before she died.
The disease she died of, hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, is a rare, rodent borne disease that can lead to a range of symptoms that include flu like illness, headaches, dizziness and severe respiratory distress, investigators have said.
The remains of Hackman, 95, and Ms Arakawa, 65, were found in their Santa Fe home on February 26, when maintenance and security workers showed up at the home and alerted police.
Ms Arakawas last search was the morning of February 12 for a health care provider in Santa Fe.

Obviously, a full investigation proved that these statements were false. Hackman was certainly not in good health, as Allen claimed. In fact, Chief Medical Investigator Dr. Heather Jarrell determined that the former actor was in a very poor state of health and listed a number of health conditions that would be detrimental to his wellbeing.
Mr. Hackman showed evidence of advanced Alzheimers disease, Jarrell said. He was in a very poor state of health. He had significant heart disease, and I think ultimately thats what resulted in his death
These conditions were not necessarily new, either as the autopsy revealed that Hackman suffered from severe heart disease, including multiple surgical procedures involving the heart, evidence of prior heart attacks, and severe changes of the kidneys due to chronic high blood pressure.
Allens interview, coupled with the fact that officials initially described Hackman and Arakawas deaths as suspicious led many to delve into heavy speculation regarding their cause of death. As it turns out, Arakawa died of a rare disease typically transmitted by rodents while Hackman was simply in poor health and was unable to care for himself.

The final autopsy results for Gene Hackman detailed the beloved Oscar winning actors extensive medical history two months after he and his wife were found dead inside their home.

Hackman, 95, had a history of congestive heart failure and severe chronic hypertensive changes, kidneys
He had a bi ventricular pacemaker since April 2019 and neurodegenerative features consistent with Alzheimers Disease, according to the autopsy.
Autopsy showed severe atherosclerotic and hypertensive cardiovascular disease, with placement of coronary artery stents and a bypass graft, as well as a previous aortic valve replacement, the documents stated.
Remote myocardial infarctions were present involving the left ventricular free wall and the septum, which were significantly large. Examination of the brain showed microscopic findings of advanced stage Alzheimers disease.
But Hackman tested negative for Hantavirus the rat borne disease which killed his wife, Betsy Arakawa.
Police have since determined that Arakawa died first around February 12 as a result of respiratory symptoms caused by the rare but deadly virus, which is passed on through rodent urine, saliva and feces. She was 65.
Arakawa had bookmarks on her computer suggesting that she had been researching medical conditions with symptoms similar to Covid 19 or the flu prior to her death.
CHAOS - A week after the bodies were discovered, the New Mexico Department of Public Health conducted a health assessment on the property.
The department concluded that dead rodents and their nests were found in eight detached outbuildings on the Hackman property, making it a breeding ground for the hantavirus
