The Clovehitch Killer..TRUE or NOT?
Is The Clovehitch Killer Based on a True Story?
The Serial-Killer Thriller is Now on Netflix. BBC 10 NOV 2023 While the movie looks and feels like a true crime story, The Clovehitch Killer is not based on a true story....Dylan McDermott plays The Clovehitch Killer However, it is inspired by a serial killer you might know: the 'BTK Killer' Dennis Rader. If you haven't heard of him before, Rader assigned himself the nickname 'BTK' in messages to law enforcement, after his preference to 'bind, torture and kill' his victims. Between 1974 and 1991, he killed 10 people. The cases remained unsolved until 2005, when he was caught after he accidentally revealed his identity to law enforcement. (He anonymously asked them if a floppy disk could be used to trace his identity; they lied and said it couldn't, so he sent them one.) Fans of Mindhunter will know that Rader was potentially going to be the focus of the now-cancelled third season, having been seen in the final moments of episodes throughout previous seasons. You can read more about Rader and his crimes here. In terms of The Clovehitch Killer, the movie isn't a direct adaptation of the BTK Killer story, as this killer ends up being caught (and killed) by his own son. However, there are a lot of similarities that make it clear that Rader was an influence. The main one is the method of the killer, revealed early on to be Tyler's father Don (played by American Horror Story's Dylan McDermott). But there are also details like Don being a Boy Scout leader, same as Rader, and Don collecting trophies such as driver's licences, which is also what Rader did. It's also not the first time that the BTK Killer has been used as inspiration for a fictional serial killer: Thomas Harris partially based Red Dragon's Francis Dolarhyde on the killer, among other sources.
