The Woman in The Wall TRUE Story: CRUEL NUNS @ Magdalene Laundries Scandal Explained
The legacy of one of Ireland’s most shocking scandals is examined in new BBC thriller The Woman in the Wall. BBC 28 AUG 2023 ![]() ![]() Ruth Wilson as Lorna Brady in The Woman in the Wall. The new series explores the institutions known as The Magdalene Laundries, where so-called “fallen women” were sent when they fell short of the repressive moral codes of their times, and which creator Joe Murtagh has said he was compelled to write about out of “peak frustration of people still not knowing about [them]." Ruth Wilson (His Dark Materials) stars as Lorna Brady, an individual suffering from severe trauma and bouts of sleepwalking as a result of the abuse she suffered within the walls of a Magdalene Laundry when she was younger. Although Lorna herself is a work of fiction – along with the murder mystery she is embroiled in – the character exists to bring attention to the unimaginable trauma and pain that tens of thousands of very real survivors have lived with. The Woman in the Wall is based on a true story- Magdalene Laundries explained...... The Woman in the Wall takes inspiration from the real-life figures who were incarcerated in Ireland’s Magdalene Laundries. Magdalene Laundries were institutions run by Catholic nuns that accepted so-called "fallen women" – a broad term used to describe sex workers, unmarried mothers, abused women and any others deemed 'badly behaved' or 'problematic'. Once admitted to the institutions, they would perform demanding physical labour for long hours and no pay, which included most famously commercial laundry as well as other exhausting tasks such as scrubbing floors. Some survivors of these Laundries have spoken about being physically or sexually abused by those in charge, with Wilson's character Lorna Brady having suffered greatly. In The Woman in the Wall, a young Lorna gives birth while housed in one of these buildings, but the baby is cruelly taken away from her. Wilson learned that there are cases in which this really happened. Episode guide
