Peter Bogdanovich Dead: Sopranos Star And One of The 'New Hollywood' Directors Dies Aged 82

Oscar-nominated director Peter Bogdanovich, who was one of the 'New Hollywood' directors and a star in The Sopranos, has died at his home in Los Angeles

Daily Mirror 7 JAN 2022

Peter Bogdanovich has passed away at his home in Los Angeles

Oscar-nominated director Peter Bogdanovich, who was one of the 'New Hollywood' directors and a star in The Sopranos, has died at his home in Los Angeles aged 82.

Peter's daughter, Antonia Bogdanovich, confirmed the news that the director of The Last Picture Show had passed away.

The two-time Academy Award nominee was seen as a bridge between Old Hollywood and New Hollywood more than anyone else with Paper Moon, What’s Up, Doc?, Targets, Saint Jack, Daisy Miller, and At Long Last Love, among his credits.

He also appeared in front of the camera, with his most famous role being on The Sopranos as Dr. Elliot Kupferberg, therapist to Tony Soprano’s own psychologist, Dr. Melfi.

Peter's last film as director was She’s Funny That Way in 2014, before appearing in episodes of Get Shorty on television.

The filmmaker had a colourful personal life which included him having an affair with Cybil Shepherd, who was a model when he cast her in The Last Picture Show.

The relationship cost him his marriage to Polly Platt, who was also his professional partner, in 1971 after eight years together.

He also had to bear the murder of Dorothy Stratten, a Playboy model who starred in his comedy They All Laughed, and was her boyfriend at the time her life was taken by her husband at the time.

Peter was a film critic that became movie maker and was among the first of the so-called 'nerds-***-directors' who were raised on cinema before turning to making the films themselves.

He helped inspire Steven Spielberg and later Quentin Tarantino, who followed his path into cinema.

Peter's parents were Serbian pianist Borislav and an Austrian painter Herma, with the family arriving in Kingston, New York before he had his first birthday.

Peter studied acting during the 1950s under Stella Adler, who also named Marlon Brando and Robert De Niro among her students.

He was said to be an obsessive moviegoer and in the early 60's he programmed films at New York’s Museum of Modern Art.

In 1968 he moved to Los Angeles with his wife and collaborator Polly, with the sole intention of becoming a filmmaker.
