Where Manhunt Night Stalker Delroy Grant is Now and Sickening Fate of His Victims

On the outside it appeared Delroy Grant was the perfect husband - but in reality the Manhunt Night Stalker was attacking pensioners in their beds

Delroy Grant was seen as a "pillar of the community" - but was hiding a sickening secret.

During the day he was a full-time carer to his disabled ex-wife, who was crippled by aggressive multiple sclerosis, and by night he would drive passengers around in his taxi.

A neighbour said the Jamaican man was always seen pushing his smiling then-partner around in a wheelchair near their home in a quiet cul-de-sac in Brockley, southeast London.

"People say he was a charmer, a nice guy, a regular bloke," said Detective Chief Inspector Colin Sutton, who was the man responsible for leading the investigation into a series of connected burglaries and sexual assaults.

"There was a lot of surprise when he was arrested. People just wouldn’t have thought that Delroy Grant was the Night Stalker."

It came as a shock to many when the loving husband and family man was named as the Night Stalker, but his reign of terror began 17 years before he was eventually caught.

Grant broke into pensioners' houses, cut off their telephone lines, unscrewed light bulbs to ensure darkness then sexually assaulted his victims.

The Night Stalker was responsible for a horrific catalogue of crimes which began in 1992, but it wasn’t until six years later that a dedicated unit, Operation Minstead, was established to hunt him down.

The distressed victims would usually wake up in the dead of night with a bright torch shining into their eyes before being sexually assaulted by Grant dressed entirely in black and masked by a balaclava.

In May 1999, a key chance to catch Grant was missed when the DNA of another suspect with a similar name was confused with his.

He carried on committing heinous crimes for another decade until he was eventually put behind bars.

Scores of additional officers were deployed to invisibly saturate the target area on a nightly basis and Grant was finally caught in the act of committing a burglary on November 15, 2009.

When police searched his Vauxhall Zafra they found the Night Stalker's rape kit - a grey balaclava, a blue cagole, a grey fleece and crow bar.

In March 2011, Grant was convicted of 29 offences, including burglary, rape and sexual assault.

Judge Peter Rook said the Night Stalker left a "trail of distress, fear and misery" and carried out "humiliating and degrading sexual attacks" on his victims.

"You targeted elderly victims living alone. Your actions blighted the remaining precious years of their lives," he added.

"Their homes, where many of them had lived for years, should have been their safest refuge where they could have expected to live their lives undisturbed and at peace.

"It's hard to imagine the extreme fear that the feel of your gloved hand and the sight of your masked figure looming above them must have been felt by your victims in their beds."

Grant was given four life sentences on three counts of rape and one of attempted rape.

The rapist was also given concurrent eight-year sentences for seven indecent assaults, and concurrent six-year sentences for 18 burglaries and attempted burglaries.

Sentencing him at Woolwich Crown Court, the judge added: "Your utter depravity knows no bounds. You will only be released if the parole board considers it safe to do so.

"I have no doubt you are a very dangerous man capable of committing heinous crimes and causing incalculable harm to people. Your offending is in a league of its own."

Grant was ordered to serve a minimum of 27 years behind bars and is currently incarcerated at HMP Belmarsh in Thamesmead.

The Category A prison is home to some of Britain's most notorious criminals who are also serving out life sentences.

Other inmates include child killer Ian Huntley, tragic MP MP Jo Cox's murderer Thomas Mair and soldier Lee Rigby’s killer Michael Adebolajo.

While Grant remains locked away, the repercussions from his awful crimes continue to impact the victims.

Many of the victims died before Grant went to trial and did not get to see justice done in their lifetime.

Victims described how the final years of their lives had been "ruined" and they lived in constant fear they would be attacked again and would take severe precautions to stay safe.

Partially-blind Cynthia Stephens, 93, who was attacked in Croydon, South London in 2009, died three months later having "lost the will to live".

During Grant's trial, the son of one of his victims said: "It has ruined the winter years of my mother's life, and she has to live with this for the rest of her life."

Another victim, who was 77 when she was burgled and indecently assaulted, wrote a statement explaining how her life had drastically changed.

"I have found that time is not a great healer. I don't think it's got any easier over the last year," she said in the statement.

"I certainly haven't got back my peace of mind. Nobody can guarantee it won't happen again."

She added: "If I go out I like to be home before dark. I do a lot of locking and bolting, and taking precautions... It changed my life."

Martin Clunes plays DCI Collin Sutton in ITV drama Manhunt (Image:ITV)

DCI Colin Sutton, who was brought in to lead the investigation into the Night Stalker, has described how he felt meeting Grant for the first time.

When Grant was caught on the first night off he'd had in weeks, Colin jumped out of bed in the middle of the morning and rushed over to the police station.

"When I met the suspect for the first time I had a conversation about cricket with him. It was bizarre," explained the former detective ahead of Manhunt airing.

"It fitted in with what everyone told us about him -'he was the life and soul of the party, of the cricket team, played dominoes and darts in the pub. You must have the wrong man' they said.

"He knew he was just about to have a swab taken inside his cheek which was going to send him to prison until he was very old man, if not until he dies.

"And he was so relaxed, so calm and so cool about it. He was just a chilling sort of bloke you might have had a beer in a bar with after a cricket match. He was just so ordinary.

He added: "With the Night Stalker it was hard to reconcile it with yourself when you look at him and talk to him and think ‘I know what you have been doing for the last 17 years’."
