Spice Girls star Melanie Brown, known as Mel B, has appeared in a shocking video to highlight domestic abuse, after her own claims she was in an abusive marriage for ten years before becoming an ambassador for charity Women's Aid.

Mel, 45, is seen at home with a partner in the harrowing video called Love Should Not Hurt, trying to run out of the door but being grabbed back by the man and pulled on to the floor.

He then beats her and drags her around the house , before she flees again and he catches her, throwing her on the ground and strangling her.

Her face bloody and beaten, the man then lands several more punches until Mel lies motionless on the ground and he spits on her.

In the next scene, Mel tries to cover her bruises with makeup while the man can be seen shouting at her, though there is no dialogue.

The couple then put on a united and happy front at a party with friends, highlighting how people in such awful situations will often put on a brave face in public.

They dance together in front of the applauding crowd, and Mel looks blissfully happy, but clips of abuse are then cut into the sequence.

Mel has previously accused her ex husband Stephen Belafonte of abusing her during their 10-year marriage, which he strongly denies.

A lawyer for Stephen calls her claims "nothing but a smear campaign" and repeatedly denies allegations of abuse.

She has since claimed she's crippled by flashbacks and terrifying dreams about Stephen.

She tells how one particularly vivid nightmare left her screaming, and her mum Andrea had to reassure her it wasn't real.

Mel told The Sun : "I came running down the stairs because I thought my ex had cut my finger off.

“I thought it had actually happened because he was threatening to do that. I was convinced my finger was gone and my mum had to reassure me it was still there.

"I have to remind myself that I’m living in the present and that the flashback is my brain playing tricks on me."

Asked by Good Morning Britain's Susanna Reid what she experienced, Mel replied: "Domestic violence, mental abuse and almost torture. It’s just not a very nice thing to have gone through.

"I’m kind of happy because I teamed up with Women's Aid.

"It’s about educating people and making them aware that's not normal, fair or respectful for anybody to treat any other person like that."

Mel has said she's been struggling with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) since her marriage broke down in 2016.

She credits leaving Los Angeles and moving back to Leeds to live with her mother, with helping her through the process.
