Role Bradley Cooper Walked Away From Almost Ended His Career - But Saved His Life

Long before Bradley Cooper won plaudits for his smash hit film A Star Is Born he made the high risk decision to walk away from his biggest role yet

He's been nominated for eight Oscars, won two Grammys and a BAFTA and is one of the most in demand actors and directors in Hollywood.

But Bradley Cooper almost threw his career away by quitting the role that made him famous in a desperate attempt to save his life.

Bradley, who won huge praise for A Star Is Born, which he both directed and starred in, has his pick of the best roles and projects.

However, when he started out as a struggling actor almost 20 years ago roles were harder to come by.

The Hangover star's passion for acting started when he was still a child and his father introduced him to films like The Elephant Man.

After graduating from Georgetown University in Washington, Bradley went on to land a small part in the second series of Sex And The City, where he played a short-term love interest of Carrie Bradshaw.

It led to a presenting role on a travel show before he got his film breakthrough in Wet Hot American Summer, which was slammed by critics but has gone on to become a cult classic.

But it was his role in the hit series, Alias, also starring Jennifer Garner, that propelled him to the big league.

Bradley played journalist Will Tippin, who was friends with Jennifer's character, Sydney Bristow, and was helping her investigate the death of her boyfriend.

Alias, which was directed by JJ Abrams, was a huge hit but as the first series progressed Bradley's role began to get smaller and smaller.

This only seemed to get worse by the time season two started and Bradley was struggling with what he saw as his failure.

He explained in 2013: "I would only work three days a week, snd then for the second season, I got even more sidelined. I was like, ‘Ugh.’ And then, the next thing you know, I want to f****** kill myself."

It came at the same time as Bradley, who hasn't drunk alcohol for 16 years, was having issues with drinking.

Against the advice of his friends and agent, Bradley made a decision that could have ended his career - he told Abrams he wanted to quit the show.

The Oscar nominated actor said: "J.J. was like, ‘OK'. He probably would have fired me anyway."

Shortly after making his bombshell decision, Bradley tore his Achilles tendon while playing basketball and spent almost a year recovering when he couldn't work at all.

He has since admitted he considered quitting acting for good because of the set-back.

As soon as he was able to work, the A-Team actor landed roles in hit films He's Just That Into You and Wedding Crashers, and made the decision to stop drinking.

In a frank interview with GQ Bradley credits being sober with saving his life.

He said: "I realised I wasn't going to live up to my potential, and that scared the hell out of me. I thought, 'wow, I'm actually gonna ruin my life; I'm really gonna ruin it'."

And after he landed a starring role in the hit comedy The Hangover, his career sky rocketed.

Huge roles in Silver Linings Playbook, Limitless and American Hustle. He has even joined the Marvel universe as the voice of Rocket in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise.
