On a clear, cold day in May 1959, two U.S. Army officers clad in polar gear gazed through their aviator sunglasses at the endless white horizon before them. Standing heroically in front of Arctic personnel carriers, Col. John Kerkering and Capt. Thomas Evans took measurements for a new military installation to be buried beneath Greenland’s ice cap. They called it “Camp Century.”

The proposed facility in northwestern Greenland was publicly touted as a “nuclear-powered Arctic research center” nestled in a wilderness of ice and snow. But the real reason for this Cold War base was to build and maintain a secret network of tunnels and missile silos connected by rail cars known as “Operation Iceworm.”
It was the tense days of the Cold War when a rivalry between the nuclear powers of United States and the Soviet Union had military leaders constantly scheming new ways to outfox the other side. Pentagon planners thought that by shuttling 600 nuclear-tipped “Iceman” missiles (a new moniker for the existing Minuteman) back and forth between 2,100 silos, they could keep their counterparts in the Soviet Union guessing. Imagine a potentially deadly game of atomic “whack-a-mole” spread out across 52,000 square miles of northern Greenland.
“We needed a flat surface, a level with less than one degree of slope,” Evans says in a voiceover of a U.S. Army film, released in 1960, documenting the scout mission for the site. “This would minimize construction problems by enabling us to keep all of our tunnels on the same level.”
Here's How the Truman Doctrine Established the Cold War
Once the location was settled, hundreds of military engineers and technicians trekked 150 miles from the existing Thule Air Base along Greenland’s northwest coast to the Camp Century site. From 1959 to 1961, they dug hundreds of feet into the compacted snow, fashioning an underground city with a sleeping quarters, laboratories, offices, a barber shop, laundry, library and warm showers for 200 soldiers.
The American public didn’t know about Project Iceworm until a Danish Parliament investigation published documents about the secret project in 1997, but they did know about Camp Century. Television crews and journalists from National Geographic and the New York Times visited as the camp took shape.
So, too, were an unlikely pair of Boy Scouts, one from Kansas and one from Demark. They won a contest to visit Camp Century and their letters and diary entries sent home revealed much about the daily life in their frozen, underground city, according to Kristian Nielsen, head of the Centre for Science Studies at Denmark’s Arhaus University.
Camp Century was a Pentagon-built base in northwestern Greenland that was publicly touted as a “nuclear-powered Arctic research center.”
But its real purpose was to build and maintain a secret network of tunnels and missile silos connected by rail cars known as “Operation Iceworm.”
Nielsen also found accounts that soldiers living underground worried about exposure to radiation from a nuclear reactor that powered the station. “We had a hard time finding out about this,” Nielsen says. “It was a concern for them.”
The underlying public message of Camp Century was to show how ordinary Americans (albeit soldiers) could live and work in a remote location, almost as a stepping stone to a space colony. Army researchers did perform some science, including drilling the first ice core to the base of the Greenland ice sheet, a core that provided information to scientists about the past climate.
All the while, however, planners back at the Pentagon were trying to figure out how to use Camp Century to coordinate a secret missile installation.
Despite the Cold War propaganda and amazing feats of engineering, the ice-bound underground installation ultimately didn’t work. Operation Iceworm was shut down because the walls of snow and ice kept moving, squeezing the tracks that carried the missile train. Problems with the nuclear reactor forced its removal in 1964 and by 1966, the Army had abandoned Camp Century altogether.
Nielsen says the experiment also failed because of politics. Danish officials had a policy of no nuclear weapons on Danish soil, even though it allowed the U.S. military to use Greenland as a staging area.
And a Pentagon dispute erupted between generals at the Army—who wanted their own missile system at Camp Century—against Air Force and Navy officials who wanted control over positioning of the nation’s nuclear missiles.
“It was a turf battle,” he says.
Camp Century was shuttered, and engineers figured that ice would eventually entomb the abandoned station. But decades later, warming temperatures under climate change presented a problem.
In 2016, a team of scientists reported that the rapid warming of the Greenland ice sheet could lead to the exposure of radioactive, toxic and human waste that remains at Camp Century, possibly leaking into the streams that lead to the ocean. “It’s just a matter of time,” says Mike MacFerrin, an author on the 2016 study that exposed the problem. “When the water reaches these wastes and gets to the coast, then we’ve got a big problem.”

The Danish king has surprised some historians by changing the royal coat of arms to more prominently feature Greenland and the Faroe Islands in what has been seen as a rebuke to FEEBLE Trump

Less than a year since succeeding his mother, Queen Margrethe, after she stood down, King Frederik has made a clear statement of intent to keep the autonomous Danish territory and former colony within the kingdom of Denmark.
For 500 years, previous Danish royal coats of arms have featured three crowns, the symbol of the Kalmar Union between Denmark, Norway and Sweden, which was led from Denmark between 1397 and 1523. They are also an important symbol of its neighbour Sweden.
But in the updated version, the crowns have been removed and replaced with a more prominent polar bear and ram than previously, to symbolise Greenland and the Faroe Islands respectively.
The move comes at a time of increased tension over Greenland and its relations with Denmark, which continues to control its foreign and security policy.
Trump last month said again that he wants the US to buy Greenland, and the Greenlandic prime minister, Mte Egede, recently accused Denmark of genocide in response to investigations of the forced contraceptive scandal of the 1960s and 70s. In Egedes own new years address he accelerated calls for Greenlandic independence and called for the shackles of the colonial era to be removed.
Trumps son, Donald Trump Jr, was expected to visit Greenland on Tuesday, a local government official told Reuters, adding that it was a private visit and that he would be recording material for a podcast and would NOT meet with any local officials.
Trump Sr later confirmed the trip was taking place in a post on his Truth Social website, without mentioning a date. He added:
'Greenland is an incredible place, and the people will benefit tremendously if, and when, it becomes part of our Nation. We will protect it, and cherish it, from a very vicious outside World. MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN'
The royal household said the coat of arms, which is used on official documents and seals and elements of which date back to the 12th century, strengthens the prominence of the commonwealth. The three crowns, it said, had been removed as it is no longer relevant.
The changes, it said, were made after a recommendation from a committee that was appointed straight after his accession on 14 January 2024.

Trump is refusing to rule out using American military force to retake control of the Panama Canal and seize Greenland, citing economic security as a driving factor.
Speaking at a Tuesday press conference at Mar-a-Lago, the incoming US president explicitly declined to give assurances against using military or economic coercion when pressed about his plans regarding Panama and Greenland.
I cant assure you on either of those two, Trump said in response to a reporters question. But I can say this, we need them for economic security.
The remarks came during a rambling UNHINGED session with journalists at his Florida resort home and will probably set off diplomatic alarm bells around the world as Trump prepares to return to the White House later this month with an agenda of muscular American nationalism.
Trump claimed the Panama Canal, which was transferred to Panamanian control in 1999 under a 1977 treaty, was being operated by China, an assertion that comes amid his repeated calls for the strategic waterway to be returned to US control.
The Panama Canal was built for our military, Trump said. Look, the Panama Canal is vital to our country. Its being operated by China. China! And we gave the Panama Canal to Panama, we didnt give it to China.
When it came to Greenland, Trump threatened economic retaliation against Denmark, noting that if that country resisted his territorial ambitions he would tariff Denmark at a very high level
His tough talk also extended due north, as he reiterated his interest in using economic force to make Canada into a US state and criticized US military support for one of its closest allies.
Canadas prime minister, Justin Trudeau, rejected Trumps comments, saying: There isnt a snowballs chance in hell that Canada would become part of the United States.
Trump was speaking as his son, Donald Trump Jr, touched down in Greenlands capital, Nuuk, where he reportedly distributed Make Greenland Great Again hats despite claiming to be visiting purely as a tourist.
His comments are sparking particular concern given the United States history of military intervention in Panama.
In December 1989, the US launched Operation Just Cause, deploying 9,000 troops to join 12,000 US military personnel already in the country to overthrow the Panamanian military dictator Manuel Noriega.
The invasion, which resulted in the deaths of 23 US service members and an estimated 500 Panamanian civilians, was condemned by the Organization of American States and the European Parliament as a violation of international law. It also resulted in the removal of Noriega, who would later be sentenced on drug-trafficking charges to 40 years in US prison.

Trump had a fiery nasty phone call with Danish prime minister Mette Frederiksen over his demands to buy Greenland, according to senior European officials.
Speaking to the Financial Times, officials said that Trump, then still president-elect, spoke with Frederiksen for 45 minutes last week, during which he was described to be aggressive and confrontational about Frederiksens refusal to sell Greenland to the US.
The Financial Times reports that according to five current and former senior European officials who were briefed on the call, the conversation was horrendous. One person said: He was very firm. It was a cold shower. Before, it was hard to take it seriously. But I do think it is serious and potentially very dangerous.

Britain would have the right to buy Greenland BEFORE the US, the islands last Danish minister said.
If Denmark does decide to sell Greenland, Britain will have the right to buy the island first. This statement was made on 26 January by the Danish ex-Minister for Greenland Tom Heim.
The politician explained that it was Britain that, back in 1917, demanded the right under which it could be the first to acquire the island in the event of a decision to sell it.
If Trump tried to buy Greenland, he would have to ask London about it first, Heim is quoted as saying in an article in The Sunday Times newspaper.
He stressed that the commitment of 1917, when the United States first made a preliminary attempt to purchase Greenland, still remains in force. This, as Heim noted, secures the Danish Crowns rights to the island.
According to the former Danish Minister for Greenland, former American leader Woodrow Wilson, who served as president of the United States from 1913 to 1921, subsequently agreed that Greenland belongs to Denmark and always will be.
According to an Epinion survey, only 3% of Danes support joining the island to the United States.

NUUK, Greenland AP Greenlands likely new prime minister on Wednesday rejected Trumps effort to take control of the island, saying Greenlanders must be allowed to decide their own future as it moves toward independence from Denmark.
Jens-Frederik Nielsens Demokraatit, a pro-business party that favours a slow path to independence, won a surprise victory in Tuesdays parliamentary election, outpacing the two left leaning parties that formed the last government.
With most Greenlanders opposing Trumps overtures, the campaign focused more on issues like healthcare and education than on geopolitics.
But on Wednesday Nielsen was quick to push back against Trump, who last week told a joint session of Congress that the U.S. needed Greenland to protect its own national security interests and he expected to get it ?one way or the other.

Moving Toward Independence From Denmark
Greenland, a self-governing region of Denmark, has been on a path toward independence since at least 2009, when the government in Copenhagen recognized its right to self determination under international law. Four of the five main parties in the election supported independence, though they disagreed on when and how to achieve it.
The island of 56,000 people, most from Indigenous Inuit backgrounds, has attracted international attention since Trump announced his designs on it soon after returning to the White House in January.
Trump is focused on Greenland because it straddles strategic air and sea routes in the North Atlantic and is home to the US Pituffik Space Base, which supports missile warning and space surveillance operations.
Greenland also has large deposits of the rare earth minerals, which TRUMP wants, needed to make everything from mobile phones to renewable energy technology.
Trump said U.S. control of Greenland could be important for national security reasons and even suggested NATO should be involved, but Rutte demurred. Denmark has said that it will summon the US ambassador to Copenhagen to respond to reports that US intelligence agencies have been ordered to increase espionage in Greenland.
The Danish foreign minister, Lars L?kke Rasmussen, said on Wednesday that he was concerned about the report in the Wall Street Journal, telling the Ritzau news agency: It worries me a lot, because we dont spy between friends.
Speaking on his way to a meeting in Warsaw, he added: I cant know if its true because its in a newspaper. But it doesnt seem to be strongly rejected by those who speak out. That worries me.
High ranking officials working under Tulsi Gabbard, the director of national intelligence, issued the instruction to agency heads in a collection emphasis message, the Journal reported.
Such messages customarily help to set intelligence priorities and direct resources and attention to high interest targets.
The Central Intelligence Agency, the Defense Intelligence Agency and the National Security Agency were all included in the message. It told chiefs to study Greenlands independence movement and attitudes to American efforts to extract resources on the island, according to the Journal, citing two unnamed officials familiar with the matter.
Seasoned intelligence operatives say the Arctic island of about 56,000 inhabitants has not historically been a target of US espionage activity.
The move will further alarm Denmark, a US ally and NATO member, which has repeatedly vowed that the island is not available for sale or annexation. The country is planning to spend $1.5BIL to protect Greenland from Trump, which has autonomous status under Denmarks constitutional monarchy.
Trump, who has mused since his first presidency about the possibility of possessing Greenland, refused to rule out seizing the 836,000 sq mile territory by force in an interview with NBC that was broadcast last weekend.
I dont say Im going to do it, but I dont rule out anything, he said. We need Greenland very badly. Greenland is a very small amount of people, which we'll take care of, and we'll cherish them, and all of that. But we need that for international security.

Faced with increasing pressure from Trump to hand over the strategically important island of Greenland to the U.S Denmark has announced plans to beef up its military presence there.
Key to the $2BIL effort is the purchase of three new Arctic patrol boats, two long range drones, and an unspecified number of new maritime patrol aircraft.
These looming acquisitions are meant to replace worn out equipment and provide additional surveillance and sensing capabilities over and around one of the worlds largest islands. The plan was announced as Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, is at the center of an increasingly strategic race to expand control and military influence across the Arctic region.
The U.S China, and Russia are all vying for the regions military, geostrategic, and economic benefits, and the island is already home to one of the U.S militarys most strategically important outposts.
We are facing serious security policy challenges, Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said in a statement on Monday. The Danish Defense Intelligence Service assesses that the threat level in the Arctic and the North Atlantic has worsened. Therefore, we must significantly strengthen the Danish Defense presence in the regions.
This new procurement program is part of a broader security pact between Denmark, the Faroe Islands and Greenland. These governments seek to increase their ability to patrol and gain situational awareness over a 660,000 square mile landmass with about 27,000 miles of coastline.
In addition to the ships and aircraft, Denmark has a dozen dog sled teams to monitor an area three times the size of Texas.

Donald Trumps plan to bully another country into giving up its rare earth minerals appears to have backfired, One mine is said to have enough minerals to operate for 1,000 years
Trumps previous statements about controlling Greenland for national security seem to have been part of a larger plot to get favoured access to the countrys rare earth minerals.
Greenland has two thirds of the minerals most crucial to the United States, which are used by technology companies to build their products, according to the report.
Tony Sage, who owns the professional soccer team in Perth, Australia, told The Post that the mine is a game changing rare earth mine for the West.
To that end, the Trump administration sent a letter of interest to another local mining company offering a $120 million loan to help expand their operations.
However, that plan appears to have backfired as Greenland officials say the countrys mining industry doesnt need to grow that quickly.
We dont need to be the greatest mining country in the world, Naaja Nathanielsen, Greenlands mining minister, told The Post. To run a small country and a small economy like ours, we need a good stable income over time that benefits the people and protects the environment.
Instead, Nathanielsen seems to want a much smaller industry to develop across the country
I do think in 20 years we will have six or seven active mines at any one time, a mix of smaller and bigger mines, Nathanielsen said.

Bully Trump has taken fresh steps in his desperate bid to take control of Greenland.
He has long insisted the move would help boost international security and, in March, he suggested it would be a simple process for his nation to acquire the territory. However, Mr Trump has since faced a fierce attack from Greenland with its defiant Prime Minister blasting the world leader for his bulling tactics.
Yet now, Mr Trump, 79, has appointed Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry to serve as the US *special envoy to Greenland, a measure he believes will represent a huge advance in securing the island. Mr Trump said today: Jeff understands how essential Greenland is to our national security, and will strongly advance our countrys Interests for the safety, security, and survival of our allies, and indeed, the world.
Mr Landry took office as governor in January 2024. His term ends in January 2028. Describing to his new appointment an honour, he expressed his pride on social media.
But Greenland, with less than 60,000 residents, is an autonomous territory in the Kingdom of Denmark and holds strategic importance for the Kingdom of Denmark, NATO, and the EU. It is a socially progressive island, where like in Denmark, education and healthcare are free and the island is rich in minerals.
