The Secret Hospital: Rampton The Big House

(Controversial Psychiatric Hospital UK Documentary)

Some of the countrys most terrifying infamous crminals have been treated at the high security hospital

THE MAD HOUSE

At the beginning of the 20th century, Broadmoor Hospital was the only high-security psychiatric hospital in Britain, and it was becoming increasingly overcrowded.

Some of the countrys most terrifying infamous killers have been treated at the high security hospital

Beverley Allitt
The nurse, dubbed the Angel of Death, at a special childrens unit became one of Britains most notorious killers.

Bruce Lee

Arsonist Bruce Lee burned 15 victims to death, including small children, during a reign of terror that lasted seven years.

Peter Bryan
The infamous, self-confessed cannibal killer spent eight years at Rampton after murdering a 20-year-old shop assistant.

Charles Salvador (Bronson)

Though not a killer, the man dubbed "Britain's most violent prisoner" and the subject of several books, television programmes and films has spent time in Broadmoor and Rampton under the Mental Health Act.

Salvador, 64, has spent around 40 years of his life behind bars - much of that time in solitary confinement due to his extreme violence.

Staff were over-worked and the patients suffered both abuse and neglect, and it became clear to the state that another hospital was required.

The northern setting of Nottinghamshire was selected as the ideal location for the new hospital. The serene countryside and fresh water supply were outstanding features, and the 300 bed facility was constructed in just over three years.

The first 128 patients were transfers from Broadmoor Hospital to Rampton, and it was manned by a skeleton staff of just 21. In just six years, the hospital had grown exponentially, and now included a farm and a boundary wall, separating the facilitys grounds from the outside world.

This somewhat disturbing documentary originally shown on UK television back in 1979 lead to significant reforms at Rampton Hospital over its management and the treatment of patients.
